Did anyone else see the Storyville about the Notre-Dame fire , and follow up progs about building medieval cathedrals, and rebuilding Notre-Dame?

I especially liked some of the ideas for rebuilding the spire, that are nodding to the medieval builders and also building for this century and the future, for instance catching solar power. Very symbolic for Xians !

I was gripped by the account of the fire, with all the personal testimony and dramatic sights that of course we didn’t have full access to at the time. Pleased to have heard from the eloquent firefighters. That young woman with the shining face and cheerful determination! Had to take a pause after that - looking forward to seeing the rebuilding programme.

Alexa what channel was the program on ?

I would be very interested in seeing it .

BBC 4 Birdwatcher. I've got it recorded, sounds good.

Alegrias2 Tue 17-Nov-20 11:27:34

This sounds good, I'll plan to watch it. Thanks for the recommendation Alexa

I haven't seen any of the programmes yet, but have recorded them, and am looking forward to seeing them.
I remember, years ago, reading the book Pillars of the Earth, and being fascinated about how a cathedral was built, in the middle ages, I think.

I didn’t watch the main programme but did watch a couple of the later ones about how cathedrals were built and found them fascinating. I had no idea that Fred Dibnah made programmes about architecture.

Reminds me of the false fire alarm we had at our cathedral several years ago. We all piled out to watch as the uniformed fire crews arrived. One member of the young wives group was heard to coo 'firemen and clergy, what more could you ask for?' ??

Must catch up with the Notre Dame programme

Thanks Ellianne ?

I watch very little tv these days but this was an excellent programme. The follow up on how they're rebuilding the Notre dame was equally good.

I'd seen the programme about rebuilding before. The firefighting one was very good. What an amazing group of men - and the lady of course. It was so nerve wracking hearing about them fighting to save the towers and stop the bells falling even though we knew they had succeeded.

Alishka Tue 17-Nov-20 19:20:56

I've just finished watching it. The firefighters were superb. The Rector of N.D. an absolute bellend. What a superb documentary!

Alishka Tue 17-Nov-20 19:22:03

Oh! it's on BBC4 btw.

The Rector of N.D. an absolute bellend

How incredibly rude! ???
What on earth do you base this on Alishka ?

Auntieflo Tue 17-Nov-20 22:53:35

We've just finished watching this. Amazing how courageous the firefighters are, and we will watch the other two programmes .

I usually hate programmes with subtitles, find them hard to follow. This one though was absolutely gripping. Even put my crochet down as I didn't want to miss anything. Listening to the firefighters was very humbling, especially the young girl who was attending her first fire. Looking forward to catching the follow up programmes.

Observation.

I watched the whole programme from beginning to end and I observed bravery, dedication, fearlessness, humour, sadness, stoicism and grief from all involved. I didn't see one person involved in that tragedy that I thought could be described as a "bell end".

Alishka Wed 18-Nov-20 12:49:26

But the Rector wasn't 'involved' in the tragedy - unless I blinked and missed it.

Chewbacca Wed 18-Nov-20 13:47:23

Whether the Rector was involved or not, I'm not entirely comfortable with calling anyone a "bell end". Each to their own.

"The Rector of N.D. an absolute bellend"

Besides the amazingly disciplined and heroic firefighters, ordinary humanity too was included .
