Anyone else watching this and finding it a bit disjointed (or is it just me)?

sodapop Mon 30-Nov-20 15:16:03

No I did as well Sparklefizz haven't watched the second episodes yet, it didn't really grip me.

Sparklefizz Mon 30-Nov-20 15:19:23

Glad it's not just me then, sodapop. I am mainly watching it because I had a fabulous holiday in Iceland years ago and wanted to see more of the scenery but it seems to me that characters suddenly appear without any context.

Alegrias2 Mon 30-Nov-20 15:23:43

I've watched 4 episodes now and I'm really liking it. Didn't find it disjointed but as with most subtitled programs I find I have to concentrate more to keep track of what's going on.

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-Nov-20 15:43:10

Yes. I think you need to concentrate on this one but I'm enjoying it and haven't found it to be disjointed.

allium Mon 30-Nov-20 15:45:36

Its getting better.

Farmor15 Mon 30-Nov-20 16:03:07

I’m enjoying it so far- you do have to concentrate because of subtitles but I like the fact that the main characters have difficulties in their personal lives. I read a lot of Scandi noir- local library has lots of authors including some Icelandic.

Cheesey Mon 30-Nov-20 17:24:37

We have watched the first two episodes and must admit we are struggling to follow. If it gets better though we will persevere.

Talking about Scandi authors I love the Viveca Sten Sandhamn Murders series about a Swedish detective Thomas and his friend Nora, solving crimes on the little islands within the outer Stockholm archipelago.
The films of the books are now available on Amazon Prime too, subtitles obviously, and are well worth a watch even if only for the beautiful scenery and houses.

merlotgran Mon 30-Nov-20 17:29:09

We're enjoying it. You do have to concentrate but I love it when a discovered photograph links all the victims. Helps me keep track of who's who.

Cherrytree59 Mon 30-Nov-20 17:39:49

Cheesey' thank you?
I have read several of the Sandhamn books and enjoyed them.
However, I was very disappointed when tried to listen on audible, the narrator had an American sounding accent.?
Will look out for films on Amazon prime.

Cheesey Mon 30-Nov-20 17:50:36

I hope you enjoy the films Cherrytree. If you enjoyed the books it is lovely to see the characters come to life.

tattynan Mon 30-Nov-20 17:54:50

Episodes 3 and 4 much better than 1 so stick with it.

Auntieflo Mon 30-Nov-20 17:58:28

We are watching this, but had to watch the first two episodes on catch up. I think it helped having a bit of a binge watch of 4 episodes.

But, what is bugging me, is, does anyone else think the storyline is familiar?

merlotgran Mon 30-Nov-20 19:47:51

Yes Auntieflo and I think there has been more than one drama about murders connected to a derelict orphanage where children were abused.

Can't remember them individually though.

Auntieflo Mon 30-Nov-20 22:46:07

? Oh Merlotgran, glad I wasn't imagining it then!

Maggiemaybe Mon 30-Nov-20 23:49:23

I wasn’t sure about this after the first couple of episodes, but it’s picked up in 3 and 4. Unfortunately we’re boxing and coxing Valhalla episodes with ones of The Bridge series 4, and I keep getting them confused. grin Not helped by the fact that The Bridge series 3 had a similar storyline, re abuse in a children’s home.

Witzend Tue 01-Dec-20 07:07:55

We’ve only watched one episode so far, so I do wish people wouldn’t include spoilers about the plot.

felice Tue 01-Dec-20 08:18:23

It was the Welsh drama Hinterland which had a background of a derelict orphanage.

Sparklefizz Tue 01-Dec-20 11:20:08

But, what is bugging me, is, does anyone else think the storyline is familiar?

In a review of Valhalla before the first episode, the reviewer said he thought it seemed like a composite of a handful of previous Scandi Noir dramas, and not just because of the snow! He even thought Kata looked like Saga, but that's taking it much too far! (and none of Saga's lovely jumpers!)

felice Tue 01-Dec-20 11:43:44

Just realised, that in Hinterland the Orphanage had been turned into an Hotel, with the same nasties who ran the Orphanage involved.
Tried Valhalla here but it is the original Language with Flemish subtitles.

sodapop Tue 01-Dec-20 12:08:14

I will persevere with episodes 3 & 4 as you all say it improves. Watch this space.

BlueBelle Sun 06-Dec-20 10:15:00

Only just caught up with this but watched 1-4 in a binge watch and I am enjoyed it just two to go

mokryna Sun 06-Dec-20 10:19:00

What a twist last night! I am enjoying it as much as DNA

Greeneyedgirl Sun 06-Dec-20 10:27:03

I always enjoy these Scandi mysteries, even if some are similar. I like that mostly their actors look like “normal” people, not film stars.

merlotgran Sun 06-Dec-20 15:36:02

Is it just me who thinks how odd it is that they dash off and investigate possibly dangerous new leads on their own?
