Spiral - all 86 episodes!

We have just finished watching Spiral, all 86 episodes of it.
How lovely to finish a long running series and find an excellent ending, loose threads tied up yet still the possibility of continuing.
I have to admit that the gruesome murders in the earlier series were offputting but I am so glad I continued watching. The plots continually improved and I am so going to miss the characters.
I do not switch on the TV until 6 in the evening but having something compelling to watch to take my mind off this pandemic has helped me remain sane.
Suggestions as to what to watch next much appreciated. We have access to Netflix, YouTube and terrestrial TV including catch up.

Espee, we love this too and are nearing the end of our marathon viewing. I do agree it can be quite brutal.
What makes it even better for me, I can understand quite a bit of the dialogue.
When we watch Montalbano, DH likes to think he can understand much of what is said, I only know the swear words. ? ?
Spiral allows me to ^show off^?

I think this may be my next binge....86 episodes how long will that keep me occupied?

I too have loved spiral, although we are still watching the last series.
I am not always aware of what channel things are on, as we record them (if you Google, you'll find out) but we have enjoyed:
Thou Shalt Not Kill (Non Uccidere) an Italian series.
The Sandhamn Murders - much lighter - sort of Midsummer Murders in beautiful Swedish islands - very good characters.

We have also just finished all 86 episodes. Sad that series 8 is apparently the last ever. Loved seeing the characters develop.
Now to find something else to watch.

I’d like to watch Non Uccidere but although google says it’s on all4 it isn’t !

Last tango in Halifax was a favourite of mine. Think it had five series. BBC 1. Might just revisit........

Lucca, I haven't heard of it. Off to investigate!

Let me know what you think!

Loved it and I found it was very good for my French listening skills. We are in the early days of Hill St Blues. There have been some good Welsh series - Hidden was one

I enjoyed this and was worried that there'd be a heroic death of one of the main characters. Shame it's over.

I was so glad that there was no heroic death. I was convinced there would be. Like you Nannytopsy, it certainly improved my listening skills.

Only just got around to watching the last episode - loved the street scene ending and like others am so pleased there was no heroic ending. So sorry that there won't be another series.

Although we have watched most of the Spiral episodes in the past, we are now re-watching and up to series 6. It's surprising how little we can remember of it (must have been dozing!) and it still seems very fresh and contemporary.

We have loved all 8 series, and sorry there will never be more, but so glad the final ending was entirely satisfactory!

We just started watching Lupin ,looks promising

Spiral is just about my favourite series, and then Line of Duty (though I've been a bit disappointed with the last two series). I came late to the Bridge and enjoyed it, but I do wish it hadn't been so gruesome.

I didn't see the first few series of Spiral. I think I picked it up at about Series 4.

As it is available on IPlayer from series 1, I have started to watch it from the beginning but I don't think it's as engaging as the more recent series and it's style has changed quite a lot.

I read somewhere that in France, Spiral was available only on a subscription channel with just half a million subscribers.

Why was it not taken by mainstream channels I wonder? Thought to be racist, because so many of the criminals are foreign? Or because it portrays the French judicial system in such a very poor light - almost endemic corruption, etc? Or both?

Esspee Wed 10-Feb-21 13:27:41

Eloethan the series does improve with time.

I really like the idea of Laure and Gilou walking off into the sunset together, but I think it's too much to hope for a spin off along those lines, I think the actors who played those characters wanted out.

I would love more Spiral featuring some of the newer members of the cast such as Ali he was a great addition imo. Maybe Laure and Gilou could pop up in cameo roles from time to time. Wishful thinking!

Excellent series which we watched from the beginning. The portrayal of the murdered got less gruesome as time went on! It was very interesting seeing how different the French legal system and police procedure is. Some great characters and so good that they didn't get too soapy as has happened in some UK series. I think it was a good place to end, but I'll miss it.

Love Spiral but still to watch the last series as I’ve revisited the previous one to remind me . Probably shouldn’t read this thread in case there’s a spoiler !

Sunlover Wed 10-Feb-21 23:09:33

Watched all 86 episodes during COVID infection. Both my husband and I loved it. Sad that it’s finished.
Must say it didn’t always show the nicer side of Paris!!

glammagran Mon 22-Feb-21 22:23:30

Loved Spiral and so I’m so sorry to see it finish. I can imagine a spin-off series starring Ali though.
