For me, as I grew up in a rural area abroad- it was HAIR early 1970. Seen many since, but none ever had the same impression as HAIR did in those early days.

Song and Dance, loved it?

granfromafar Fri 29-Jan-21 19:22:48

Mine was also Hair in the early 70s. I was only about 16 or 17 and must have gone with my elder brother. The memory of Paul Nicholas in the altogether stayed with me for quite some time!

West Side Story. It's still my favourite. Our school dance teacher told us to go the cinema to watch it for homework.

We saw Hair on honeymoon.

I saw Hair, but before that I think I was taken to see The Sound of Music on stage, before the film, I think I was about 10 or 11. Quite a few years before Hair, must have been late teens when I saw that.

South Pacific, I was only little, but can’t remember how old. I thought it was exotic and loved the song ‘I’m gona’ to wash that man right outa my hair’.
Little did I know is be singing it with my choir, many years later.

West Side Story on a coach trip with the youth club, aged about 13. I was completely bowled over and it's been my favourite ever since.

Pickwick with Harry Secombe. Having said that, I can’t remember where I saw it or who I went with confused.

Les Miserables with a friend for her birthday. Her parents paid for a group if us to go in 1986 as we were all hard up students.
It was amazing then and I’ve seen it many times since then.

South Pacific for me too. I was 8 or 9 and I went with my friend and her mum. We had sandwiches with a delicious filling Called sandwich spread. 1958

I remember seeing Hans Christian Andersen starring Danny Kaye in 1952. Next was 7 Brides For Seven Brothers in 1954 then The King And I in 1956.

DD's college lecturer was in the first production of Hair!

I looked at her with respect afterwards. She was a very good lecturer apparently , most enthusiastic.

The first musical I saw was at the cinema, I was 14 and it was a Youth Club outing; the film was in Todd- AO.
South Pacific and all the girls loved it but the boys weren't so impressed. I've seen it on stage since and would still enjoy it.

Funnily enough, DH just asked me how long ago we went to see Les Miserables (can't remember) although I've never forgotten it.

Don't remember which I saw first. It was either Phantom of the Opera or Starlight Express.

I always wanted to see Hair, but could not afford to go as it would have meant an overnight stay, and I was an impoverished student nurse when it was touring.

Alfred Drake in Kismet in a London Theatre in the 1950’s. My parents loved live theatre and for a good number of years we went to the pantomime at the Palladium in Boxing Day afternoon and we often went to other shows during the year. One Christmas there was a change of tactics and we went to the Stoll theatre and saw Peter Pan - the year we went Dorothy Tustin played Peter.
The other benefit we had was seeing all the Christmas lights on a relatively quiet day.

Loved Blood Brother's. Over the last 20 years probably seen it about 4 times and I always enjoy it. On the other hand Mama Mia never did anything for me but I know loads loved it.

Hair in London in the early 70s. The cast walked through the audience giving out flowers. On stage, there was both male and female nudity. Rather more than you see nowadays, in fact.

MayBee70 Fri 29-Jan-21 20:33:54

Oh yes. Blood Brothers. Only saw it once but remember leaving the theatre with tears streaming down my face. Always found live theatre a bit hit and miss but it was worth the bad ones to see the good ones. Trouble is, unlike the cinema it’s so expensive.

Grannynannywanny Fri 29-Jan-21 20:39:27

I went to see Hair in the early 70s with a couple of fellow student nurses. I seem to remember the bodies weren’t of the bare plucked chicken variety that’s popular today. There was an abundance of hair in Hair.

Callistemon Fri 29-Jan-21 20:55:56

Oh yes. Blood Brothers.

Goodness, I'm beginning to feel old
I saw Blood Brothers on stage when I was in my 40s!

Does a musical movie count?

One evening when I was about 7 years old mum and her best friend took me and not my little sister (!) .. to see the new Walt Disney film ‘The Swiss Family Robinson’. I can’t remember anything at all about the film (apparently it starred John Mills and Dorothy Maquire (who?) and was released in 1960.

I can only remember the confusion in the bathroom when mum was washing my sister at the sink and not chivvying me along. In fact she was downright stalling me. Why? My confusion turned to fizzing delight when mum made a ‘shh’ face at me behind my baby sister’s back and I realised there was a secret reason for this carry on!

Bedroom door closed on my sister and I had to creep downstairs behind mummy to be taken to the pictures! It was dark too and I was to stay up and go OUT to watch a film instead of Going To Bed! Pity I can’t remember a darn thing about the actual film ....
?

Grannybags Fri 29-Jan-21 21:15:54

Hair in London for me too. I was told I was not allowed to go because of all the nudity but sneaked out anyway (as usual!) and really enjoyed myself.

I did admit to my Mum years later that I had been to see it and she admitted to me that she knew!

Elusivebutterfly Fri 29-Jan-21 21:20:34

I'm not sure which was the first one on stage - I haven't seen very many on stage - but the film The King and I was the first film I saw at the cinema and I still love it.

Shinamae Fri 29-Jan-21 21:21:36

South Pacific, my aunt May took me I must’ve been about eight. I cannot stand musicals now not any of them, I have never seen the Sound of Music Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Mary Poppins any of them.....(and I bet I’m in a minority of one) ?

sodapop Fri 29-Jan-21 21:26:12

South Pacific here as well but the film version. On stage it was Phantom, Miss Saigon and then my favourite of all time Les Miserables.

Jaxjacky Fri 29-Jan-21 21:27:09

First and last was Blood Brothers, my daughter was studying it at school, can’t stand musicals, apologies.
