I cannot understand the popularity of this type of music. It is a whaling song, it is bad enough that the Japanese and others still go whaling without popularising it through music

Why do you think sea shanties are whaling songs?

Whaling songs can be classed as sea shanties but that’s different.

DGS have four legs but not everything with four legs is a dog.

The one in the charts is a whaling song

It’s about working together.

I think there are lots of sea shanties which are not connected to whaling.

We’re talking about one specific song then. Not sea shanties.

I thought sea shanties originated from merchant seamen pulling together in time to the singing when working e.g. pulling ropes. Maybe from the word ‘chant’ or the French ‘chanter’. Not necessarily whaling. Although I haven’t listened to the one in the charts. I will now.

Just listened, tea and sugar and rum, but definitely whales too. I’m sure no one can agree with whaling.

I’ve listened too. It’s a long way down from the best sea shanties I’ve heard so I’m not sure why it appeals.

The repetitive rhythm may be? Perhaps we’re longing for a simple tune with a chorus we can sing along to.

Still Tizliz please don’t confuse one whaling song with sea shanties in general.

Well I am a scouser and we were taught shanties at school I know them all. They started by seamen while doing their job all working in tune with each other. Fantastic music I spent my youth listen to Brian Jaques radio show Jakestown on a Sunday playing folk and shanty music.

There was a film made a couple of years ago about a group of Cornish fishermen who formed group. Called the fisherman’s Friends singing all the old shanties there was supposed to a follow up film by Covid put a stop to it.

I probably posted in haste as I was annoyed and wanted to vent, but was in a hurry as OH was waiting to go out.
