Did anyone watch this tonight? I thought it was very well done - good acting, convincing scenery and very gripping (though rather gory).

Thanks for all these great reviews. Think I'll give it a miss as I'm in to light and fluffy escapism at the moment. Helps to combat daily life which is currently somewhat dreary.

I binged all 10 episodes! (available on iPlayer). Found it riveting and the acting was brilliant. I didn’t know much about the polar explorers before but I do now thanks to the internet. Would like to find out more.

I’ll be watching this when my free week of Now tv comes to an end on Monday. I like Ciaran Hinds too and am a big fan of Jared Harris who was wonderful in Chernobyl. Jared Harris has Irish heritage though doesn’t he, his father Richard Harris was Irish.

It is so well done - such great actors. I have to finally admit, though, that I'm finding it very hard going now - so much disaster and tragedy. I'm nearly at the end now and it will be rather a relief.

I won't be watching this, it's too much like a horror film which makes it unrealistic. I much preferred Shackleton (2002) with Kenneth Branagh which was gripping and much more true to life.

I’m half way through this and finding it excellent.

Greyduster Thu 11-Mar-21 15:31:52

My goodness! Last night!! ?. Not sure I’ll stay the course.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Mar-21 15:37:27

I've been watching on catch up so I'm a bit ahead. Was last night "The Ladder"? Now that was scary!

Urmstongran Thu 11-Mar-21 15:42:13

I felt like a wrung out dishcloth after watching last night’s episode! I certainly didn’t expect what happened to have happened. (sorry to be vague didn’t want a spoiler in my post).

Urmstongran Thu 11-Mar-21 16:00:39

10 episodes and that was no. 3.
I think I could have done without the ramping up from ‘a beast’. I’d rather the imagery was less, stuck to factual and ended after say 8 episodes really.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Mar-21 16:07:04

There are no facts though UG, they have no idea what happened to them. So after they sailed into the ice, that would be the end.....until they found the remains in 2004, I think?

I didn't realise it was going to be so much of a horror movie but I am enjoying it.

SueDonim Thu 11-Mar-21 16:08:05

We watched episode three last night. One of our cats was sitting on the back of dh’s chair and just as ‘that’ happened, the cat licked my dh’s head. Poor Dh shot about a mile up into the air! grin

EllanVannin Thu 11-Mar-21 16:08:33

My neighbour's been bingeing on Bates Motel and keeps telling me to watch it but it's not my bag I'm afraid. I don't mind a good murder mystery but Hitchcock's writings were dark psycho films.

Urmstongran Thu 11-Mar-21 16:17:56

Now that REALLY made me laugh SueDonim.

Yes, I get that technically ‘no one knows’ in detail about the deaths from these 2 ships Alegrias but lead poisoning from faulty cans (alluded to last night), starvation, hypothermia, etc would be expected. No need for a mythical Inuit beast.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Mar-21 16:32:10

You're right, of course Ug. That would have been a good tale too.

But I quite like the idea of a mythical Inuit beast! Scary though he/she/it is!

Eloethan Thu 11-Mar-21 16:32:10

I think you can take "the beast" at face value or you can see it as symbolic. There are, as others have noted, parallels with Alien and some might have seen "the alien" as symbolic too.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Mar-21 16:32:48

Oh, good point Eloethan.

Lona Thu 11-Mar-21 16:36:19

According to Google, there are 2 series of 10 episodes each! I'm not sure there's enough going on to sustain that many episodes!

Lovetopaint037 Thu 11-Mar-21 16:42:17

Yes, it made a change from cops and murders. However, the blood and gore was really a laugh more than horror,. Anyway I am now reading the book. So far good.

Chestnut Fri 12-Mar-21 17:29:34

I gave up on both The Terror and Bates Motel after one episode because I don't want to watch anything dark and creepy. I have kept my mental health at a very good level even through the pandemic and I know dark and creepy would bring me down mentally. I can cope fine with The Serpent and Line of Duty etc. both of which are quite extreme in their way, but I know my limits.

We do know some things about what happened. However what’s interesting is how Victorian England reacted to the failure of the expedition and how they desperately needed to find someone to blame and not the brave men themselves for some things

“Though research in the 1990s [PDF] and in 2016 strongly supported the cannibalism account, most Victorians thought it inconceivable that Royal Navy men would resort to "the last dread alternative." Charles Dickens captured the racist sentiment of the time when he wrote in his magazine Household Words, "No man can, with any show of reason, undertake to affirm that this sad remnant of Franklin's gallant band were not set upon and slain by the Esquimaux themselves … We believe every savage to be in his heart covetous, treacherous, and cruel." Yet physical evidence collected over the past 160 years has consistently proven the accuracy of Inuit oral histories of the expedition's final days.”

I think this one small example says something very pertinent about how history is initially written up, by whom, whose accounts are given credibility and how it’s nearly always nationalistic and how it needs to be revisited and revised.

On a lighter note, does anyone know the song ‘North West Passage’? I love Judy Collins version

Deedaa Fri 12-Mar-21 19:20:49

I know the song about Franklin that Pentangle recorded.
"In Baffin Bay where the whale fishes blow the fate of Franklin no man may know"

Xander Fri 12-Mar-21 19:36:41

Watched all episodes on Iplayer. All in one go!!!! Could not stop watching
