On holiday at the moment and after dinner we are too exhausted to do anything other than read or watch TV. We would appreciate recommendations on good programmes on Netflix as we have started watching several but given up.

My daughter has just seen Red Joan starring Judy Dench. The family enjoyed it
We enjoyed Maudie, a true story about a Canadian artist who lived in a very unusual way, was disabled and could paint lovely naive paintings. She became famous.
Then there was Lion, again a true story.
Enjoy your holiday.

'Unbelievable' is excellent. We also recently enjoyed 'The Two Popes'.

'Always Be My Maybe' is a great feel-good film.

Thank you both, that's tonight sorted?
We did watch The Two Popes and enjoyed that.
Any more recommendations gransnetters?

As SalsaQueen says, it depends on your personal taste. Mine tends toward sci fi, animals, comedy, British procedurals, Jane Austin/historical/regency, etc., and documentaries. smile

Schitt's Creek
The Good Place
Grace and Frankie

John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch
The Movies
The Mind Explained
Dogs

Happy Valley (shoot, loved River and New tricks but don't see them listed anymore sad )

The Rainmaker
Inception
About Time

My Netflix favourites are The Crown, The Gilmore Girls and Kath and Kim.

And Somewhere Between was quite good

If you want something to really make you think about the legal process (albeit the American legal process) I found Making a Murderer compelling. There are 2 series of it.

Jane43 Sun 12-Jan-20 23:09:36

Making A Murderer is very good but The Staircase was even better for me. A documentary which follows the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife, lots of twists and turns

Who sees Us - a compelling series, a true story about a group of young black men accused of a rape in Central Park, I couldn’t stop watching it

The Irishman - a long film but very watchable, stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and made by Martin Scorsese

Mrs Lowry and Son, a film about the relationship between LS Lowry and his mother, very well done

Mindhunter - there are two series and some of the best I have seen on Netflix, about an FBI initiative in the 1970s to interview serial killers with a view to helping track others down

The Looming Tower, a series based on true events in the FBI and CIA leading up to 9/11

7 Seconds - a series about a hit and run of a young black boy in New Jersey, involves police corruption, racism and drug dealing, a lot of swearing but very good

Green Book, a previous best film at The Oscars, excellent story

Moonlight, another previous best film at The Oscars, very moving

Marriage Story - will probably be nominated for a few Oscars, stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, very intense with excellent performances from Scarlett and Adam

7 Psychopaths, if you like black humour you will like this, stars Colin Farrell

I am currently watching Anne with an E based on Anne Of Green Gables, Very nostalgic

Watching "Occupation" at the moment - original version in Norwegian but with sub-titles. Gripping. Dreadful to think this might actually become something in the future.

tiredoldwoman Tue 28-Jan-20 16:34:51

I liked Birdbox and Hush - scary !

Daddima Tue 28-Jan-20 16:59:05

I too loved ‘Outnumbered’, but not so much series 5 when the children were older ( and I think two of them had been replaced by other actors. It was interesting to learn that only the adults had scripts, and the children mostly improvised.

Just watched episode 1 of The Stranger which was first aired today on Netflix. It looks as if it is going to be very good. The writer Harlan Coben always writes good mysteries.

Jane43 Fri 31-Jan-20 22:21:27

I have just finished the third series of Anne with an E. I really enjoyed it, the actors did a great job, especially Matthew, Marilla and Anne.

Esspee Fri 31-Jan-20 23:12:07

Thank you everyone. Back home now to wind and rain but we have a list to work through thanks to all your recommendations.
