The Crown......again!

I've started watching the latest series and have just seen episode 4.
Episode 3 featured Charles and Diana on tour and in one scene they attended a "dinner". Charles was standing to the fore giving a speech and Diana was seated slightly to right of scene...........with her legs crossed! Correct me if I'm wrong but the Royals do not do this do they?
Also, in episode 4, the Queen summoned all four of her children individually to a private lunch meeting. In one scene the Queen and Andrew were eating poached salmon........using ordinary cutlery. Surely they would have used fish knives?
This might all sound rather trivial to many of you but if a media company goes to all the trouble of producing a drama series on the Royal Family they might at least get the finer details correct!

Many many details are not correct in The Crown, PollyDolly, and many so-called facts are wrong too !!

OceanMama Mon 30-Nov-20 07:52:28

I checked google images. Plenty of pictures of Diana with her legs crossed. So I guess they do?

No idea about the salmon. Are fish knives just for fish with bones in? I use ordinary cutlery on my salmon steaks.

I think this series is particularly cruel. I know it's a drama and not factual but so many people believe what is shown on the screen.

I remember getting a set of fish knives and forks as a wedding present PollyDolly don't think anyone uses them now, mine were sold a long time ago.

Jane10 Mon 30-Nov-20 08:33:46

Have you read the John Betjeman poem that mentions fish knives...?

MrsThreadgoode Mon 30-Nov-20 08:41:36

The series should come with a ‘this is Fiction based on some true events ‘ preferably in large letters at the beginning of each episode.

PollyDolly, if your major concern about accuracy in this series of the Crown is the lack of fish knives and Diana crossing her legs, I'd relax.
It's a fictionalised drama based loosely on our national history, told through the RF. It's great tv for lock down but suspend belief. Enjoy the scenery, the dogs, the horses, the clothes and the clipped accents in The Crine. Don't expect a true reflection of history and all will be well.
Just to add, I find it helpful to watch with sympathy for the RF. What a job the key members have from cradle to grave. All their mistakes captured on film or in the memories of a "source close to the RF" who is willing to sell their soul for a bit of cash or publicity.
My natural sympathy was for the 19 year old whose dreams fell apart. Doesn't mean I don't feel for every one involved in that drama.

Jane10, Well remembered.
“ Phone for the fish knives Norman”
Fish eaters are considered common, I doubt they are used in Royal households.

Dreams or ambitions , a 19 years old can have both.

Jane10 Mon 30-Nov-20 11:41:41

Here it is. John Betjeman mercilessly skewering 1950s middle class pretensions.

How To Get On In Society

Phone for the fish knives, Norman
As cook is a little unnerved;
You kiddies have crumpled the serviettes
And I must have things daintily served.

Are the requisites all in the toilet?
The frills round the cutlets can wait
Till the girl has replenished the cruets
And switched on the logs in the grate.

It's ever so close in the lounge dear,
But the vestibule's comfy for tea
And Howard is riding on horseback
So do come and take some with me

Now here is a fork for your pastries
And do use the couch for your feet;
I know that I wanted to ask you-
Is trifle sufficient for sweet?

Milk and then just as it comes dear?
I'm afraid the preserve's full of stones;
Beg pardon, I'm soiling the doileys
With afternoon tea-cakes and scones.

Apparently Camilla is getting a lot of abuse on line including death threats.

pensionpat Mon 30-Nov-20 13:47:24

I was thinking that any ground that Camilla has made with public opinion over the past years will have been lost. With probably not much time to regain it.

She has coped for 40 years poor woman, so many lies about her and so many believe them.

Atqui Mon 30-Nov-20 14:05:38

Love the poem. I read recently that another abbreviation like NOC is MIF
- milk in first!!

Jane10 Mon 30-Nov-20 14:37:03

Oh dear MIF is another HKLP! So many secret social cues.
My Dad told me that in the war he was sent to a special weekend location in a big country house where among other things his table manners and general knowledge of how things should be done and said were secretly scrutinised. He must have done OK as he was sent for officer training after that.

Urmstongran Mon 30-Nov-20 14:54:10

Jane10 - sorry to be dim but what’s ‘HKLP’?

Sparklefizz Mon 30-Nov-20 15:15:28

Anniebach

She has coped for 40 years poor woman, so many lies about her and so many believe them.

Which lies Anniebach ?

Grandma70s Mon 30-Nov-20 15:27:35

The John Betjeman poem is basically a list of non-U behaviours.

Do people say non-U any more? It was used quite lot in my youth.

Jane10 Mon 30-Nov-20 15:32:03

HKLP = holds knife like pen! Very non U. That won't mean anything to younger Grans but was a talking point at one time.

Lucca Mon 30-Nov-20 15:35:22

Anniebach

Dreams or ambitions , a 19 years old can have both.

Meaning ?
“Poor woman”. .? Camilla ? As they say in east Enders “ leave it out”

MayBee70 Mon 30-Nov-20 15:37:33

I really loathed Camilla for a long time because I was so fond of Diana. I’ve recently been thinking how awful it must have been for Charles and Camilla not being allowed to marry but obviously being soul mates. DD, who watches The Crown said to me recently she thought it would be difficult for Charles to become king now that so many people hate him after watching the series. I can’t watch it anyway because I don’t subscribe to the network, but I don’t really want to anyway. I feel sorry for William and Harry.

Anniebach Mon 30-Nov-20 15:57:53

Poor Mrs Manakee, poor Mrs. Hoare, poor Mrs. Carling

Jane10 Mon 30-Nov-20 16:04:05

Anniebach- Diana didn't start out needing validation or looking for affection wherever she could find it. She thought she would be loved by her husband. Poor girl, she was wrong.

Lucca Mon 30-Nov-20 16:20:35

Anniebach

Poor Mrs Manakee, poor Mrs. Hoare, poor Mrs. Carling

Why Anniebach? Why have you such a dislike of Diana? She may well have had flirtations or even affairs but she was undoubtedly let down by Prince Charles. She wasn’t a saint but not as bad as you make out.
