Anyone watching? Very grim, but compelling as always. Last ever series too.

Shirleyw Mon 02-Jan-23 09:00:55

Yes, very good as always….Sarah Lancashire is a very good actor.

Gingster Mon 02-Jan-23 09:04:28

Brilliant. Sarah Lancashire is great but does speak so softly and quickly. My tv’s sound is poor , so I put on the subtitles.

Redhead56 Mon 02-Jan-23 09:09:25

I looked forward to watching it as we really enjoyed the last series. Sarah Lancashire and James Norton are both superb actors as are the supporting actors.
I thought they deserved tv awards last time around but as usual silly soaps won the awards.

I am afraid I too find Sarah Lancashire very difficult to hear. She seems to swallow her words. She got a lot of criticism on the last series and vowed she would never do another!

Charleygirl5 Mon 02-Jan-23 09:18:25

I had no subtitles 7 years ago and had mega problems hearing what was said. Even with subtitles, I found it difficult to understand because Sarah mutters as well as speaks too quickly.

Calendargirl Mon 02-Jan-23 09:31:58

Is it to do with the accent she uses?

In HV, she sounds the same as when she played Raquel in Corrie all those years ago.

Compare that to her posh accent as Anne Reid’s headteacher daughter in Last Tango In Halifax.

Was she difficult to understand in that?

Luckygirl3 Mon 02-Jan-23 09:32:03

I endorse the problem of hearing what she is saying.

It seems very odd that the producers of the programme have not noticed and done something about it. It was commented on before this series was filmed.

The least interesting thing about Happy Valley is that Sarah Lancashire (allegedly) mumbles.

Who are the mystery couple?

Is Faisal in real trouble?

Will the PE teacher get his comeuppance?

Will Catherine get to the Himalayas?

Why did Tommy choose that hairstyle?

👏🏻👏🏻
Looking forward to watching this, very realistic and how people speak.Haven’t had any problems in hearing her words before now.

silverlining48 Mon 02-Jan-23 09:39:00

We notice lots of programmes where actors (seem to) mumble so despite having an expensive sound bar use subtitles more often than not.
I hadn’t watched the first few series of HV so caught up prior to current series and enjoyed last nights first episode.

One of the things I like about Sarah Lancashire, in this role and others, is the variation in the way she delivers her lines. She can sound very intimate and can use a lowering of her voice to great effect. Makes me lean forward and take notice. It’s fascinating.

Callistemon21 Mon 02-Jan-23 09:47:54

I just have to keep reminding myself that James Norton played Rev Sidney Chambers in Grantchester because he is so utterly chilling as Tommy Lee Royce I might have nightmares about him.

Why did Tommy choose that hairstyle?
Yes, why?

Glorianny Mon 02-Jan-23 09:50:55

Well I didn't have a problem with Sarah Lancashire's speech (maybe it's a Northern thing??). I think this is a brilliant series. I love the way it shifts between drama and comedy. The exchange about planning the leaving do was so funny.
I'd add to the questions
Why is Tommy learning Spanish?

Gala Mon 02-Jan-23 10:04:40

I find everyone mumbles these days. I have perfect hearing.🤥

glammanana Mon 02-Jan-23 10:10:32

After catching up on iPlayer for the last series I was not disappointed at all I had no problem with the speech as Gloryanni says it could be a Northern thing.
Two hours of good drama now on Sunday for a few weeks as Call the Midwife is on just before Happy Valley.

Nanna58 Mon 02-Jan-23 11:33:05

I think Tommy’s hair is the icing on the cake, he looks more terrifying than ever! Brilliant episode!

Allsorts Mon 02-Jan-23 11:37:05

She does mumble but plays the part really well. A policewoman we would all want on side. I found it very scary in parts as I’m a bit of a wimp with any violence but it’s one series I’ve enjoyed.

Bea65 Mon 02-Jan-23 11:39:34

Love this series..always have the subtitles on so don't miss a line ...Tommy's hair disgusting..and think he is learning Spanish so he can abduct his son and make a quick get-away to either Mexico/Spain or South America...who knows but think he has a plangrin

Cabbie21 Mon 02-Jan-23 11:42:05

To me, she doesn’t mumble, but speaks very quickly. Having lived for many years in Yorkshire the accent is not a problem.

Great programme, but I am surprised to see a new series.

Greyduster Mon 02-Jan-23 12:16:18

I was looking forward to and enjoyed the first episode but was a bit taken aback at the amount of bad language compared with previous series’. I’m not a prude by any means but I thought it was noticeable.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 02-Jan-23 14:01:14

Perhaps the evil Tommy plans to escape to a Spanish speaking country which has no extradition treaty with Britain, whether he takes Ryan with him or not. Perhaps he's thinking they'll open a bar together?

As for that awful PE teacher ... I'd like to push him off a cliff.

Blinko Mon 02-Jan-23 14:43:25

I just have to keep reminding myself that James Norton played Rev Sidney Chambers in Grantchester because he is so utterly chilling as Tommy Lee Royce I might have nightmares about him.

He also played Dr Stephen Ward (rather brilliantly, I thought) in last year's drama about the Profumo scandal.

As for that awful PE teacher ... I'd like to push him off a cliff.

I'll help you...

Brilliant first episode which didn't disappoint after the previous series. Tommy is a monster, but the series is so well written that I had started to feel a bit sorry for him when we saw his Mother and how he had grown up. This to me is the sign of good writing, as it is when Sarah Lancashire faces from day to day policing with muttered asides and black humour; it would be a bit weird if she pronounced everything she said clearly and precisely! We just click on the subtitles, not because of the accents, but to pick up the muttered, under the breath asides!
