Eat cool

provencal potato salad

With a scorching hot weather forecast, you tend to be more inclined to eat cold, light meals, so why not try some of these dishes out.

  • Starter: Try our simple recipe for gazpacho - perfect for a hot, summer's day.
  • Main: If you're looking for a light lunch, packed with goodness, look no further than our moreish summer salads, recommended by four top influencers. Why not serve with crusty bread and a cheese platter?
  • Dessert: If you're feeling fruity, our tropical layered yoghurt made with coconut water, fresh figs, mango and plain Greek or natural yoghurt will leave you feeling refreshed. Also, don't forget to check out our quick and easy ice cream recipes the grandkids will love.
  • Drinks: Accompany your meal with an elderflower cordial. Stick it in the fridge or freezer for a cooling summer drink.

Stay cool

blinds

If you've got light curtains or blinds, keeping them closed for most of the day can help block out the sunlight and keep your rooms cool. However, if your curtains are thick, keeping your curtains closed may be counter-intuitive; they will actually trap warm air and reduce circulation. Open a few windows or turn on a fan - and keep a water bottle nearby.

Trying to get to sleep when you're sticky with sweat is never easy. One user highly recommends a cool dip in the bath before lights out: "Before you go to bed, get into a shallow tepid bath and leave the cold tap running slightly until you are lying with as much as possible of you under cold water. Stay there until you feel really cold, possibly half an hour, then get out and go to bed."

If you've got the freezer space, "wrap a sheet in a plastic bag, put it in the freezer, then half an hour before bed lay it between the bottom and top cover. Cools the bed down a treat." You might feel like you need a little bit more than just a sheet, though, so, retire the winter duvet to the loft (great chance to do some decluttering) and replace it with a light two tog summer duvet to see you through the warmer months.

Dress cool

heatwave fashion

It's not always fashion first. Don't worry about what you look like - wear a hat, light materials and keep your factor 50 topped up. However, if you are fashion concious, one user has worked our a nifty trick: "I have just bought some linen trousers from M&S that are very baggy. Someone once told me that a mistake people often make is to buy clothes on the small side...she said go a size bigger and you'll look thinner."

There are some fantastic linen designs, summer dresses and loose, colourful cotton tops on the high street this season, or you can hit your local charity shop to find some sun-proof clothing at bargain prices. We love wearing white linens, coupled with airy Birkenstocks. As another user puts it, "comfort and coverage at a reasonable price".
