Newsletter troubleshooting tips

Having problems receiving our email newsletters? Look no further for all the help to get them back on track.
Gransnet sends out email newsletters with grandparenting news and other things we think you might be interested in. There are also our child development emails that you are welcome to subscribe to to get the the inside scoop on how your grandchild is growing up.

The newsletters aren't produced every single week of the year, but we do our best. If you haven't received one and you usually do, there's a chance there wasn't one this particular week.

Whenever a newsletter is sent it is also added to the website. This means you can always view the latest and greatest, regardless of whether you received the email or not.

How do I sign up for Gransnet emails/ block Gransnet emails?

If you're receiving them but don't want to, or aren't receiving them but do want to, the first thing to do is to check your preferences under My Gransnet.

Once in the email preferences section you'll have the opportunity to tell us which of the various types of email you want and which you don't.

However, if you want the newsletters delivered and yet despite setting that in your email preferences you're not receiving them, the story doesn't quite end there. Unfortunately, in the age of SPAM, delivering emails is increasingly tricky.

Virtually all email providers, be they corporate systems or free accounts such as Yahoo, use sophisticated filters to try to avoid you drowning under a deluge of unsolicited email.

We don't have a clue why, but some email systems, of all shapes and sizes, might think that the wonderful news you've signed up for is not, in fact, something you'd like to read. This means you won't be able to get our email right away. Some email providers might put it in your "junk" folder, while others might just get rid of it immediately.

We are continuously working with the various major providers in order to ensure as many of our emails get through as possible.

Another thing to check if you're not receiving our emails is on the My Gransnet Preferences page. If we've tried to send you an email but for some reason it wasn't possible to deliver it, you may see a message on your Registration Details page which reads:

The last time we tried to send email to this address, the attempt failed. If your address is incorrect you can change it below.

There are various possibilities for why this is the case:

  • Your email address is incorrect
  • Problems at your email provider such as their servers exploding (it happens to us all)
  • Something about our email has caused it to be rejected

In this case, your email provider will have sent an automatic reply, typically called a "bounce message". We pick these up and make a note of them on your account automatically. Regardless of this, the next time we have an email newsletter going out, we'll still try to send it to you. This means if the problem was temporary such as a technical glitch at the provider then the next one should be fine.

If they're rejecting email from Gransnet then it will likely happen with the next message, too, in which case you might need to do a little work, as explained below.

What you can do

If you use one of the common free email providers there are some settings you can tweak which may well help.

Whitelisting

Most corporate email systems have a similar option - ask someone technical where you work how you "whitelist" a particular sender. They'll probably be able to help. The important bit to note is that the message is sent from an address that is unique to you - you can't copy another gransnetter's spam settings so be wary of following another user's instructions.

If you still can't receive the newsletters you have a couple of options. First, you can read them online as described above. Second, you could sign up for a Google Gmail account; they're free and have a good track record of accepting Gransnet's emails.

We hope that's told you more than you ever wanted to know about Gransnet newsletters. If you still have questions, try searching on the Forums or posting on Site Stuff and we'll try to help you out.
