I am an Oddfellow. They are local in many areas. My District has Dances/Discos, days out etc. We have a health visitor when members are unwell and need shopping bringing in, or just go round with Chocolates and a card with person wishes from friends. One guy has Dystonia in his neck and an Oddfellow take him for his injections.

On 27th April we have a St Georges Dance all to wear red and white. Last year we had a Jubillee Dance and that was great. Our age group is 3 months to 82. It is a good environment for someone who is alone and wants friends. We give money to charity, this year it is to the Bertha James Day Centre

Greatnan;I must say, Ime becoming addicted to Gransnet....can do this from the comfort of my own armchair, and it must be a great asset to someone who is isolated,or who is unable to leave their home and has to stay indoors, for whatever reason(Ime not referring to yourself) you understand; Its more relaxing than the telly! Got to go now, as Ime going to listen to Desert Island Discs which is on my BBC I Player.Enjoyed chatting.Liminetta.

Cathy - I hope things improve for you so you get a chance to have some pleasure in your life. flowers

Liminetta - I have also made more friends in the years since I retired than I did in all the years I was working. I don't see them much, as I live in a very isolated village in France, but I am in daily contact with many of them, either through forums or on Facebook. Good for you for actively seeking groups to join.

I am almost never bored! Although I cant say that I ever had a close friend all my life, I now (after retirement), have loads of friendships, because I have explored all the many "things to do" out there, and by joining them, gradually, I have met loads of like minded people.Life is good! I go line dancing, walking with an organized group, am a Theatre Volunteer, do an exercise class, go to libraries, friendship clubs, mothers union, sewing group, a Speakers Club, Fellowship Group; I went to learn how to use this computer through Age U.K, and thats how I came to GRANSNET!!!!!

Cathy, I have posted on the thread you started, under the circumstances, treat yourself, buy something small, take it home, and look at it and love it when times are hard.

cathy Wed 17-Apr-13 21:37:45

The sad thing is I don't really. Life is taken up by stuff and never seems to be much time for fun.

There is a shop that I do go to that sells all Indian housewares and rugs and when I go there I forget everything for a while as I love it so much.

Reading, novels I always have a book on the go and dipping into factual history books some of the time, swimming I belong to a gym but I don't really like the whole walking on a treadmill and other working out apparatus, would rather go for a walk in the park or the country and look at something attractive not a suspended giant tv screen. Have promised myself I will take up yoga properly this year. Travelling, both home and abroad. Pootling yes that's me, didn't know what it was before the thread on it, but I realise we do that often on our travels it's great discovering somewhere new and interesting. Cinema often, theatre less often, eating out, entertaining. My hobby genealogical research which can involve travel. Music, vising National Trust properties, going to museums, art galleries and exhibitions and keeping up with friends and family, looking after granddaughter once a week, Codeword, crosswords and GN. Yeah I agree Greatnan, apart from walking on a treadmill, I don't understand boredom either!

Greatnan Wed 17-Apr-13 11:41:05

Walking, reading, snorkeling on coral, travel, family, surfing (mainly Gransnet and two expat forums), TV, radio 4, classical music and C & W, mainly when driving, eating, entertaining friends, pootling.
I don't understand how anybody can be bored - I don't have enough hours in the day, so end up in bed at 2 a.m. finishing that day's sudoku.
(And a doze in the afternoon is very hedonistic, and nice. So it taking a long, hot bath).

Reading, U3A, NWR, family, gentle swimming, travel when I can, theatre, Gransnet!

I haven't heard of Oddfellows for years, since I lived in the Midlands as a girl!

We are both Rotarians, part of a world wide family of 1.5 million, and we have a great social life but also work locally and internationally, as some of you know, in helping communities. I call it work, but it is so enjoyable.

We're also part, on the sidelines, of the sailing club, and there is a lovely place to spend a summer evening, with a little wine or two..looking over the sea.

Reading, crosswords, minor gardening, pootling (see the thread on pootling) are all great pleasures in life. As is having a little lie down!

I sew,and make cards, scrapbook and other crafts, often with groups of other 'girls'. Zumba, read, gardening. Caravanning and socialising with friends and family. Travelling when possible.

merlotgran Tue 16-Apr-13 21:20:00

Gardening, gardening and......gardening. Mucking out chickens (yes, it can be fun hmm) and walking my dogs.

If and when the summer eventually comes we like to spend Sunday afternoons at a nearby pub on the river Cam, listening to live music in the garden, eating, drinking and catching up with friends. We only managed it once last year though as all the events were rained off.

HUNTERF Tue 16-Apr-13 21:07:21

Aerobics and taking my dog for a walk often with my granddaughters.

Delving into family history.

Flickety; I'm always finding bits of claypipe in my garden and when I did a lot of digging last year found several glass bottles. I always save small pieces of china that I find because I feel that they were part of something that was once loved and cherished by someone. And it gives me an awareness that where I am at this moment in time someone else was.

Flowerofthewest Tue 16-Apr-13 20:56:39

Walking, bird watching, wandering round garden centre and nurseries.

FlicketyB Tue 16-Apr-13 17:52:30

Sewing and archaeology. On my morning walk today, a footpath alongside a ploughed field, I picked up three fragments of a clay pipe, a small piece of blue and white pottery and a piece of much abraded pottery that was probably part of the edge of a cream separator in a farm dairy and possibly 200 years old. I also noted from the amount of brick and lime mortar in one place beside the path that there had probably been a brick built building in the field, probably a small barn or implement shed.

Nanban Tue 16-Apr-13 17:15:25

Ride my horse - mostly fall off a lot but oddly that too can be fun!

gracesmum Tue 16-Apr-13 16:34:47

What a good organisation. Is it just Oddfellows or does it include fellowesses? I believe my grandfather was a member a long time ago in Scotland and I always thought of it as a "Friendly Society" in the full sense of the word. Tell us more! And (excuse my ignorance) what is the Bertha James Day Centre?

Zengran Tue 16-Apr-13 16:34:41

I shall go and look it up, it sounds very interesting.
