The family and legal representatives of the unarmed 17 year old black 17 year old killed by a white supremacist have appealed for calm and echoed the worlds of The Reverent Martin Luther King, Our time for equal justice will come. His and his families words.
WHEN. ( my words). The Metropolitan Police show exactly the same racist approach. WHY.
Please dont tell me juries hear all the evidence and decide on the facts. Out of 25 years a an officer of the court and having worked in prisons I guarantee white juries and the police condemn black people because they are black. WHY. When we have scapegoated every race, class ,creed that is different to our own who do we blame for the problems we face, OURSELVES, heaven forfend, surely we have have got it 100% right, or, hmmm, have we?

There are plenty of photos of Trayvon Martin on the internet. He looks like a young lad of 17 to me.

Ana Sun 04-Aug-13 17:02:00

Oh I see - when you mentioned 'the UK's Daily Mail' I assumed you lived in another country.

ps Sun 04-Aug-13 14:00:05

Ana / Nonu I lcurrently live in the North West of England and apologies but I have only just found this thread but had my doubts from the time the story broke. I may be wrong of course, perhaps I am just cynical and it is after all only my humble opinion but has anyone actually seen a current photograph of the victim in this crime - not that it matters but it may prove a point albeit an undefencible one.

Nonu Wed 31-Jul-13 22:40:51

Curios as to why you are contributing to this thread , a fortnight on P.S??

Ana Wed 31-Jul-13 21:46:25

So where do you live, ps?

ps Wed 31-Jul-13 21:27:50

mmmmm. Methinks the media have milked this and manipulated the situation for their own ends. As much as any loss of life is regrettable I have had the feeling that we have not been told the full story here. Why is it the reports claim the victim was a 17 year old but photographs of him show a boy of 10 or so. It may be just me but something is just not adding up to me and is reminiscent of the UK's 'Daily Mail' and its twisting of stories to incite extreme reaction. As I said very sad but a product of a sick society perhaps. I stand to be corrected but would like to know the real truth rather than that presented for public consumption by media whose sole purpose is sensationalism to create profit.

Got it now Gm?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 19:11:44

gracesmum yes. Strangely enough, I know exactly what I was talking about. I was referring to the preachy tone of the last few posts on this thread. (Before I referred to a previous Gransnet thread)

Does it really make you feel superior to pick me up on a simple spelling error? hmm

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 19:10:27

Thanks Ana hadn't spotted it was "blued" - sorry for misunderstanding. Still don't like being accused of "oh so holy moral outrage" though. It seems when it comes to expressing an opinion on issues of principle, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.confused

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 19:08:28

grin It's the heat! But I'm sure you get my drift. smile

I should have gone with "plank"

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 18:59:02

J08 am I correct in thinking your intended reference was to :

"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

Not a lot to do with moats then.

Ana Thu 18-Jul-13 18:58:20

See jingl's post of 14.02.43, gracesmum.

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 18:50:19

Who are you accusing or preaching then?
According to OP this thread was started on 14 July by MOGGSY77, so I don't know what you are talking about. Do you?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 14:02:43

That "this thread" is a link. Though you wouldn't think so. hmm

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 14:01:57

When I started this thread there was no reply at all for four months, and even then I had to re-start it.

Where you you all then with your oh-so-holy moral outrage?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 13:56:28

Riverwalk that is true.

The world is in a complete mess. Was it always this bad?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 13:55:31

My God! There's been some preaching going on on this thread!

Moat in your own eyes?

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 12:56:10

I totally agree - Elegran - even if caring and speaking out are all we can actually do, if all the evils of the world are ignored by those of us who can speak out - who else is there? Action is not always possible, but organisations like Amnesty International do so myuch by raising awareness and ultimately exerting pressure where it is needed.

Elegran Thu 18-Jul-13 12:47:07

Another quote, Gracesmum "For evil to triumph, it is enough that good men do nothing"

Butty Thu 18-Jul-13 12:10:16

Thanks for the link when. A poignant article.

whenim64 Thu 18-Jul-13 11:59:02

A blog that highlights the victim for a change:

Nonu Thu 18-Jul-13 11:46:57

I am really not going to get into this with you .

I shall not talk or think about it anymore .

I leave you to it .

Riverwalk Thu 18-Jul-13 11:10:10

Many of the young boys killed in US drone attacks could also look not unlike Obama.

He seems not to lose too much sleep over them.

'No man is an island.......any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.' (John Donne)

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 10:59:47

Others have referred to this poem, but I wonder if you know it, Nonu. It was written by Pastor Martin Niemoller and is so very relevant whenever we think "That's not my problem"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

I would contend that wherever we are aware of injustice in the world, whether education for girls in Pakistan, equal rights for oppressed minorities or discrimination of any kind, it is our problem.
