Embracing Old Age

(244 Posts)

I am not enjoying looking into the mirror and seeing this baggy, wrinkly saggy-jowled creature peering back at me, I am not enjoying the fact that walking Grace this morning the following all hurt - in no particular order -my left hip, my left knee , my wrists and both feet (and I was overtaken by just about everybody) I am not enjoying seeing DH age (I think prematurely)and because his hearing is going, conversation is becoming non-existent, I am not enjoying the fact that my life seems flat dull and boring and the highlight of my day is Escape to the Country, I am not enjoying hearing of friends who are ill/have died/lost partners, I am not enjoying getting a name wrong when replying to an email because I hadnt got my glasses on and I am not enjoying juggling the budget because while the pension stays the same, the weekly shop buys less and less. I am not enjoying feeling fat, bumpy and lumpy and no matter what I wear I look like a cross between a Russian baboushka and a bag lady.
OK I know that the alternative to growing older is even less appealing but I think I am off to eat worms.sad
Rant over - sorry chaps, I just had to get it off my chest, normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. Tentative smile

Please do!!

Good grief, Galen What a horror story. Any disabled person reading your post would probably never dare venture abroad.

Disgraceful!

Ok! Here goes!
I arrived at Heathrow at 5am in the morning by taxi
My driver rang the assistance bell for a porter.
One hour later after several more calls ,no porter!

BOB my driver, loaded all onto two trolleys and we pushed them to departures.

Bob then had to leave.

I stood at the departure desk for about 30mins while she sorted out labels and eventually found a porter to take the case containing my luggie to the oversized departure station.

He was told to go slowly. He didn't. It was the far side of the departure hall and I hobbled along with my crutches.

I then had to walk another 100yards+ back to the wheelchair station where he demanded payment.

I refused!

The assistance staff told him, wheelchair passengers don't pay!

Eventually I got taken to the club loungue!

By now I was vomiting due to stress

They then managed to lose me?

Eventually I was boarded with the use of the high lift, as the plane was in the middle of the field.

I was sitting in my seat trying to relax when this nice bloke squats next to me and asks 'we understand you have an electric scooter with you but we can't see it?'

I explain its in its own suitcase!

10 mins later he's back! They've found it! But the batteries aren't in it?

I reply:- they're in a separate bag as I'm instructed in the hold!

He disappears again!

10 mins later, 'we've found one' me 'there are two!'

10 mins later, 'found it! They now have to be carried in the cabin!'

By now, I'm completely stressed out, in tears and we've missed our departure slot! Every one is looking at me

The first officer ( very dishy half Italian gent )assures me it's not my fault, it's the ground crews who don't know the new procedures! The stewardess and even the captain come to reiterate this fact!

By now I was exhausted and when I boarded it took me the first full day to recover!

This is the first installment.

Return journey tomorrow!

Too many obscenities, perhaps? grin
(Sorry Galen...)

Aka Sat 05-Oct-13 22:52:37

Perhaps it was deleted?

j08 Sat 05-Oct-13 22:37:12

Have I missed a thread? Everyone seems to know what happened to Galen.

Hebs Sat 05-Oct-13 21:49:22

I have been stuck in an airport, simply because I could not walk fast enough to sign up for the next available plane. The best airport I have been in is Barra, you can't get lost there

absent Sat 05-Oct-13 21:43:33

Heathrow doesn't compare with O'Hare for being frightful and impossible to find your way around and I have been to some pretty ghastly airports in Africa. I have never known a single plane take off or land on time at JFK and some East European airports don't bear thinking about. In other words, almost all airports are hellish places to be. That said, it doesn't begin to excuse the way Galen was treated.

Stansgran Sat 05-Oct-13 21:40:11

Galen if it helps this family call Heathrow Hellhole. It is possibly the most unpleasant airport on earth and I've been to some nasty ones. I could rant for you.

Ana Sat 05-Oct-13 21:32:14

Love that, Maggiemaybe! grin

Maggiemaybe Sat 05-Oct-13 21:19:36

I've just come across this thread, so apologies for the very late comment on a post several pages ago. A colleague brought in a sick note the other week that just gave "Melancholia" as the reason for not being fit to work. I felt as if I'd been transported back to an era of poke bonnets and muffs.

Agus Sat 05-Oct-13 21:14:26

Galen I'm sorry to hear you had such rotten treatment at Heathrow.

I am still laughing though at your post on the stainless steel cleaning thread.

Senility Prayer, excellent.

I have been brushing up on doing calligraphy again. Providing I don't make a mess of it, I will be putting this prayer on the kitchen wall

Ana Sat 05-Oct-13 20:54:24

grin Aka!

MiceElf Sat 05-Oct-13 20:53:31

Absolutely. We could do:

Twitter
Facebook
Local paper
Write to the chief exec about your dreadful experience
MP

I'm happy to do any / all of these.

Just say the word. Unity is strength.

Aka Sat 05-Oct-13 20:52:19

THE SENILITY PRAYER :
Grant me the senility to forget the people
I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and
the eyesight to tell the
difference.

whenim64 Sat 05-Oct-13 20:47:12

Good article allule

Galen I'm sorry to hear you weren't looked after on your journey. A few moments of helplessness in a wheelchair brought me up sharp when I realised just how much many people with disabilities have to depend on others/strangers/officials to help them with transport. Raise a stink!! If we can add some power to your elbow, say the word.

j08 Sat 05-Oct-13 19:56:20

And another hmm #slightlypathetic

absent Sat 05-Oct-13 19:45:00

No j08 why don't you go ahead and have a good laugh at someone else's problems? After all, they're probably pretty trivial compared with your husband's inability to text.

j08 Sat 05-Oct-13 19:40:24

hmm right back at you missis. [shrug]
