Embracing Old Age

I am not enjoying looking into the mirror and seeing this baggy, wrinkly saggy-jowled creature peering back at me, I am not enjoying the fact that walking Grace this morning the following all hurt - in no particular order -my left hip, my left knee , my wrists and both feet (and I was overtaken by just about everybody) I am not enjoying seeing DH age (I think prematurely)and because his hearing is going, conversation is becoming non-existent, I am not enjoying the fact that my life seems flat dull and boring and the highlight of my day is Escape to the Country, I am not enjoying hearing of friends who are ill/have died/lost partners, I am not enjoying getting a name wrong when replying to an email because I hadnt got my glasses on and I am not enjoying juggling the budget because while the pension stays the same, the weekly shop buys less and less. I am not enjoying feeling fat, bumpy and lumpy and no matter what I wear I look like a cross between a Russian baboushka and a bag lady.
OK I know that the alternative to growing older is even less appealing but I think I am off to eat worms.sad
Rant over - sorry chaps, I just had to get it off my chest, normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. Tentative smile

That last post was following on from GN's

thatbags Tue 01-Oct-13 11:52:35

Just having a day of feeling sorry for myself, I guess. Sorry.

I think it's genes. But I suppose some members of a family would be tougher than others. It must depend on which genes you happen to inherit.

pen (10:20), sorry if I came across as unsympathetic to others' pain. That wasn't my intention at all, though I can see why my grumpiness might make it appear that way. No, I was trying to express how grumpy it makes me when people complain about their appearance because they are growing older. I suppose I shouldn't let it irritate me, but it does. I'd put up with a shape I didn't like etc if... oh, never mind.

Yes, I know the posts about appearance were meant to be funny. I just didn't find them so.

Apologies.

bluebell I am opting out of discussing this with you. We obviously view Jingle very differently.

Gagagran Tue 01-Oct-13 11:49:41

greatnan I agree with your comment about Bags - she amazes me too.

Do you think good health as we age is down to luck? I think genes may come into it too but given the difference in your health compared with your sister's is that the case? Is your superior fitness anything to do with it? It is interesting to ponder!

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:47:38

You'd love that would n' t you Bluebell! grin You could have a ball!

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:45:33

No! I have not expressed any contrition whatsoever!!!

bluebell Tue 01-Oct-13 11:43:35

Gaga - we clearly have very different dictionaries when it comes to re meanings of 'nasty' and 'contrition'

I am always amazed at the way Bags copes with her many activities in spite of her pain.
Life is desperately unfair. I abused my body for years, drinking a bottle of wine a day and taking virtually no exercise. I only began to live a healthy lifestyle after I retired. (But I have never smoked). I don't deserve my good health. My sister, who has also never smoked and did not drink very much (except when she was visiting me!) is only four years older than me, but has angina, scoliosis, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and is awaiting the result of a fasting blood test to see if she is now diabetic. For a couple of months, she has been suffering from cellulitis, which has made her legs swell, blister, itch and burn. When she stayed with me, I made sure she had complete rest with her legs raised and it really helped, but now she is back home with nobody to look after her.
I got my comeuppance in a small way two weeks ago, when I strained my knee taking a very long walk (six hours) with a very stiff climb. I didn't notice it at the time, but it just gave way one day whilst When was here. Luckily, it didn't stop me driving for several hours a day, wearing a strong knee bandage. I realised how frustrating it is to be unable to stride out without pain. I am giving it a complete rest this week and I may think twice about tackling such stiff climbs.

bluebell I find your demands and comments somewhat aggressive. I was commenting more on that aspect rather than the content of Jingle's post - for which she has expressed some contrition. I repeat though - you do seem to enjoy having a go at her! (Ducks back behind the parapet)

bluebell Tue 01-Oct-13 11:18:13

JO - it was so not funny - as is often the case. How about an apology to Bags? No thought not - you don't do sorry do you. And yes, I am cross with you about your comment and rightly so. Why don't you just go onto other threads now and tell others of us who 'well publicise' other long standing problems exactly what you think if them?

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:13:45

No hole when. I'm flying! grin

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:12:27

Anno , Bags knows I have huge respect for her cubs thing. smile

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:10:46

Or are you just a cross granny? cupcake

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:09:46

And stop being so flipping' demanding.

Were you a school teacher or was it an unfulfilled ambition?

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:08:16

Joke Bluebs! smile

bluebell Tue 01-Oct-13 11:05:25

JO - if you think 'well- aired' is any more acceptable confused. And come on Gaga - still waiting....

annodomini Tue 01-Oct-13 11:01:30

Even 'well aired would be tactless. We are far more likely to hear about Bags's activities and achievements than about her aches. Archery, Cubs, many handicrafts, maintaining her garden...I don't think I had as many irons in the fire even when I was her age!

whenim64 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:00:49

Hand that spade up out of that hole you're digging, Jingle! grin

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 10:58:30

I am never off form bluebs I am always my honest self. smile

j08 Tue 01-Oct-13 10:56:50

I regret saying 'much publicised'.

'Well aired' would have been much better.

bluebell Tue 01-Oct-13 10:49:59

Gaga- anything more to add to justify your comment that JO was not being nasty?

whenim64 Tue 01-Oct-13 10:46:23

Damn you iPad - you slipped the wrong word in......should say 'she had physio' not physiology

whenim64 Tue 01-Oct-13 10:44:31

Bags your chronic pain is not 'much publicised' so take no notice. Having met you in person a year or so ago, you didn't mention then how debilitating it can be for you. It does come across in occasional posts that you are having a bad/painful time. But much publicised? No!

My mother had rheumatoid arthritis from her mid-twenties and was disabled by it. Attempts to control and relieve her pain included being hospitalised, made to rest, have physiology, gold injections, experimental new treatments and so on. Old age brought further pain and disability. She got on wth things and didn't make a fuss - would knit for the children to try to keep her fingers working. She didn't tell us how bad the pain was - it was obvious.
