to expect not to be discriminated against

A few years ago a friend and I went on holiday to Portugal. We were shown to our room and there was a double bed. I said that was unacceptable, we walked out and returned to reception where I had a right go. All they could offer was the double bed and and a camper which we had to accept with the proviso that we would move out into a room with 2 single beds the following day. The first folding bed was so ancient I refused it to be set up. The fellow came back with an almost new bed so that was okay for the night.

We discovered, speaking with others on holiday that one couple wanting a double bed were given 2 singles. The hotel staff thought that we would accept anything, sorry, no.

roses The single supplement is because I would be a single occupant in a twin room - most hotels don't have single rooms as such - just very small "doubles" as you say tucked away out of sight.

I think it is time that travel companies woke up to the fact that there are a lot of single travellers out there, many happy to travel off peak, when they are struggling to sell holidays.

All down to money I suppose, because the double rooms cost more so get the best views. Single rooms are often tucked away out of sight.The only thing to do is complain loudly, all people who want single rooms, or sometimes treat yourself to a double room?

It's bad definitely. I am wondering though if that particular hotel has singles with a sea view. If not ya boo sucks to them. Or was it just T.C. that were at fault.

I have already posted this on their Facebook page - the reply was my comments had been passed to their "team" and if I had any other travel queries to ring a premium rate number. I have also been reading through some other comments on their page and a lot of people are very dissatisfied with their service - so perhaps I have dodged a bullet there!

Hi Sunseeker - I also thought the bad old days of discriminating against solo travellers were over until I typed in the number 1 in the passenger number box! Nothing for one person for the holiday I wanted - yet funnily enough lots of availability when the number was changed to 2 !! And yes, it was with that well known company you mention!

Solo travel is a huge market these days, so shortsighted of such a big travel name to sideline singles. Must admit I now no longer use package holiday companies and happily book independently - except for one well known company who specialise in holidays to Greece. Have had mixed experiences with single only holiday companies - they are very expensive and tend to give false information about group numbers to encourage booking, but I am sure that is a whole new thread!!

I would jings but my friend isn't happy about doing that.
