Political incorrectness I do miss it!

There are so many things it is now inappropriate to make jokes about.

As I said on another thread my grandmother was a scriptwriter for my grandad in the music hall. He would tell jokes to the audience about his wife that would now be thought inappropriate. My Nan used to laugh as she had written them all.

I used to love watching 'Life on Mars' at D.I. Gene Hunt with all his sexist comments. I didn't agree with what he said, just how he said it.

Have we lost our sense of humour ?

So, what are you actually implying when you call someone a "paddy"? I know a "ninnie" can mean a silly type of person. That much is obvious, but it's not obvious about a "paddy". confused

Doesn't it just mean "Irish"?

GrannyTwice Mon 21-Jul-14 18:21:14

Ooohhhhhh Ninny - you little conspiracy theorist you!

ninny Mon 21-Jul-14 18:09:52

Ariadne and GrannyTwice funny you only appear on a thread together, must be your alter ego, I thought you were not allowed to have two forum names. It's a good way to get your point across and stay on top, I might try it.

Ariadne Mon 21-Jul-14 18:00:54

Nellie

"What oft was thought, but ne're so well expressed...." (Alexander Pope - and me!)

Of course, as it has been deleted other posters will believe subsequent posts by other people and are unable to judge for themselves.

One of the big problems of deleting a post and the site allowing posts with comments about the deleted post to remain. The site should remove all posts that reiterate what they believe they read (which may not be the same as what was written or intended).

For the record - I didn't see the post.

How can anyone maintain such a head of steam for so long? It must need frequent recharging of the AAA batteries. It is the same on another thread. And keeping it up on two threads simultaneously takes serious dedication.

rosequartz Mon 21-Jul-14 14:13:28

Good idea Elegran.

Me too

Elegran Mon 21-Jul-14 14:07:19

Is this still going on? I have been away from the laptop for ages. Think I shall go away again and stay away.

FarNorth Mon 21-Jul-14 13:53:29

rosequartz Knowing nothing about you or your family, I could only go on the few words that you posted. I now understand your intention but still think you could have made it clearer.

rosequartz Mon 21-Jul-14 13:42:06

Jingls, have pmd you.

Must remember to call DH by his correct name of Mr Quartz and not Dai or Taffy which he doesn't seem to mind at all.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 21-Jul-14 13:36:12

So, was a post deleted because it referred to an irishman as a "paddy"?!

GNHQ are losing the plot.

Loads of irishmen called Patrick after St Patrick. Paddy - short form.

I think a poster on here is owed an apology.

Tegan Mon 21-Jul-14 13:34:45

Is it discrimination against ducks in that we aren't allowed to feed them in parks any more and yet we can still put bird seed out for the blackbirds and their pals confused. If I was a duck I'd be most disgruntled angry.

rosequartz Mon 21-Jul-14 13:10:03

FarNorth It sounded to me like a sly innuendo about the residents of one particular country Of whom I am one! And DH's family from generations back.
Nothing sly and it was not an innuendo.
Make of it what you will, which is obviously your own interpretation, therefore in your own mind.

Nelliemoser Mon 21-Jul-14 13:06:43

Ninny You have chosen this as your user name.

How about if I make such a remark to you as "Ninny by name, ninny by nature? " Thus implying that you might be less intelligent than others.

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ninny

Given that I do not know you at all and we have no friendly relationship in which it might be seen as an affectionate comment between people who know each other well, would you feel offended?

Would you think it wrong for me to call you, what is an equivalent of stupid on GN?

As you seem to feel that we are all being too PC these days, would you happily accept that from me? Should I be afraid to say this to you or can I keep posting on here that "Ninny is a ninny?

It is after all, just a bit of fun!

Re. "Paddy"context is everything. Calling someone who themselves uses "Paddy" as a diminutive of Patrick or Patricia is one thing.

Referring to someone as "A Paddy" is a whole different issue. It was once decidedly a term of Denigration.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 21-Jul-14 12:38:55

All geese are horrible because they poo on riverside paths.

OMG! She's denigrated geese! shock

hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 21-Jul-14 12:35:23

Oh gosh! It was a joke wasn't it?! You're not really taking pc-ness that far are you?!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 21-Jul-14 12:33:18

Quoting far north, "but comments which appear to denigrate all entertainers would not be acceptable."

grin

That is just so funny!

GrannyTwice Mon 21-Jul-14 12:26:15

Methinks the lady doth protest too much...... Whoever said what and whoever was quoting or misquoting whatever anyone said or didn't say, it was a shabby issue to bring up. Dreadful places these police states where some people object to cheap, ill founded comments about a whole nation.

MiceElf Mon 21-Jul-14 12:18:58

Well said Whenim. And, ninny, if you have ever lived in a 'police state' or highly repressive state, as I have, you would soon find how wide of the mark your glib comments on here are.

rosequartz Mon 21-Jul-14 12:18:21

So to say "ah well you know what they say about the * and Iknow because I have come across it in my professional life
This, which was posted by another person, should have pre-fixed my above post by the way. As I said above, a total misquote of what I said, adding the poster's own interpretation to it but claiming it to be my words.

rosequartz Mon 21-Jul-14 12:16:47

angry - a total misquote of my deleted post, which now has added what some people are referring to as innuendo to it which was not at all the case.
Of course, as it has been deleted other posters will believe subsequent posts by other people and are unable to judge for themselves.

whenim64 Mon 21-Jul-14 12:09:02

Please don't resort to name calling, just say that you have a different view. There isn't a 'PC brigade' and insulting people because they take the trouble to explain why they hold their views is not being rude or insulting to you, ninny.

GrannyTwice Mon 21-Jul-14 12:06:27

Ninny grin ...... Er..... You are joking aren't you?

Elegran Mon 21-Jul-14 12:00:06

*FarNorth" I read it the other way. Just shows how a war can break over just what someone meant by what they said, doesn't it? There are no non-verbal clues to help when all you have is the written word.

Soutra Mon 21-Jul-14 11:58:48

Thank you * FarNorth* that was my reading and GNHQ clearly thought likewise. And ana you don't have to be Irish to object to the use of Paddy as a reference to the Irish any more than you have to be Scottish to object to Jock or female to object to bitch.
