... at finding the aggressive advertising Christmas campaigns aimed at children, so totally wrong?

Our grandchildren are bombarded from October onwards of Christmas toy advertising- so aggressive and constant- and bordering on the fraudulent (eg toys perfroming amazing stunts the toys are totally unable to perform in real life)- should that be stopped and better controlled?

granjura Wed 03-Dec-14 10:10:27

Forgot to mention about 'the emotional deprivation' of children in rich families- as mentioned by the Head of one of the best London private schools- and how the very busy working parents often compensate for the lack of time and attention given to the children by spending vast monies on sophisticated toys. The demands made for those toys (including electronics, etc) is partly due to peer pressure- but advertising also plays a significant part (see Eloethan comments and the articles I posted re. creating a lifetime of 'I want'. Hope this explains what I meant.

Why be so cryptic Nonu (but yes, I got it) - isn't that very rude too? If you have something to say, why not just say it, simply and politely. Easier all round. Leave you to it and Joyeux Noël.

I wasn"t being cryptic at all , and NO I just don"t do rude I leave that others.

Obviously you have some kind of bee in your bonnet!!

I will copy and say leave YOU to it & a
Joyeux Noel also, I do hope you will have as good a Time as me and mine most surely will.

Life sure is sweet for me and mine !!

You look after yourself!!

Christmas used to be a simple time of happiness, family togetherness, special treats, the exchange of presents, and many other things religious and secular to brighten up darks winter days. In less affluent days expectations were much less as was the availability of the cash with which to pay for them all. Nowadays the Christmas frenzy of easy credit, materialism and over-consumption has reached new heights, or should that be depths, and the power of advertising and peer pressure is formidable. A very special time has been spoiled, I feel, probably for ever and children are exploited relentlessly to persuade adults to spend and spend again. Governments, far from wanting to limit all this, are desperate to encourage it in the pursuit of prosperity. I am convinced that there is something very wrong with our system. End of lecture, just pass the port!

Well said papoascar (again)

Good OP from granjura

GD aged 5 would like just about every other item shown on adverts. I reminded her yesterday, I would like doesn't of course mean she will receive everything she would like. Both GDs have given me the wish list I always ask for.

DD does the same and both girls now know the lists are complete and letters have been sent to Santa so there is no point asking for anymore although they are still seeing many adverts and enjoying them.

Some people like adverts, some don't. Advertising has always been big business and people who actually buy into all the hype will do so whatever time of year it is so taking on advertising is pretty low on my list of concerns.

Some people buy things, to make themselves feel better about their circumstances, whether they are rich or poor.

I can't agree with you papaoscar. I remember my Grandparents berating my Parents for spoiling me because I was given, age 6, a watch for Christmas. Probably viewed as a Christmas frenzy by my Victorian Grandparents.

Christmas is always a special time for our family.

Nonu Sat 06-Dec-14 19:52:47

Ima 64 you say that is a good post from Granjura , I take a different viewpoint , I think she somehow lives in the past, however I could be totally wrong.
tchhmm

Ultimately it is about being strong, and saying no.
And no
And no
Daily if necessary.

But there are families where this does not happen. Many families.
So I think granjura has a point.

If childrens adverts were banned, would any of us in say a couple of years time, start a thread, and ask for them to brought back?

soontobe Sat 06-Dec-14 20:07:30

You have managed to make me change my mind by this thread granjura. Well done! I dont change my mind that often!

granjura Sat 06-Dec-14 20:08:54

LOL, you are TOTALLY wrong- not wanting children to be lambasted by explotative adverts for months on end as nothing to do with living in the past. Au contraire, I'd say. We will have to agree to disagree here.

granjura Sat 06-Dec-14 20:20:32

Posts crossed soontobe- I am truly flattered, thanks. But of course this was not the aim of this thread. Had an event today with lots of British and USA young expat parents- they all agreed that not having the constant advertising, and Christmas beginning with Advent only- is a pure and sheer blessing.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 20:40:16

Sometimes I think a particular lady on here doth protest too much.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 20:41:10

Make of that what you will. grin

Or don't bother.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 20:46:56

It's not ads that sell to children these days. It's their tablets giving them easy access to bloody Amazon! grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 20:47:52

(Or their mothers' laptops) hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 21:01:26

Why on earth should John Lewis make a donation to a penguin charity just because a penguin features in their ads? grin

(that's back down the thread. Quite a long way)

Nonu Sat 06-Dec-14 21:19:26

,JINGLE* you are very spot on,
Tee Hee

granjura Sat 06-Dec-14 21:42:27

Where do you think they got the penguins from for the ad? The local park or woods?

You are, incredibly rude both - but that's fine by me.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 22:05:34

confused How have I been rude to you granjura? Do you mean about the penguins. I don't know where they got them from. I haven't given it much any thought. But I don't think I've been rude.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 22:15:49

Anyway, they are computer generator penguins. (In the ad)

I want to know how I've been rude. Please.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 06-Dec-14 22:17:58

When I said "a particular lady....." I wasn't talking about granjura.

Serves me right for being too obtuse. hmm
