1. Outrage...everything is outrageous now
2. Offence...everything is offensive and everyone takes offence
3. Like...as scattered in conversation

Only.

And the widespread use of the word kid/s. What happened to the lovely words child or children? Why call them after young goats? They might just as well be lambs, calves or foals.

On my local news at the moment: "my thought and prayers go out...." .

Daddima Wed 18-Nov-15 13:31:57

And, incidentally, I still remember our P.3 teacher telling us that we should NEVER use the word "get", and that there was always a proper alternative!

Daddima Wed 18-Nov-15 13:29:33

" To be honest"
" At the end of the day"
" And stuff like that"
" Know what I mean?"

And many more........

I'm good ( when asking someone how they are ).

Teacher11 Wed 18-Nov-15 13:19:50

'Can I get...?' as in 'Can I get a coffee?' It's 'Could I have...?' (I blame 'Friends')
Community
Community leader
Key as in 'key worker' or 'key stage'
Heritage
Pacifically when specifically is meant
Fun as an adjective as in 'We had a fun time.' It's 'We had fun.' Or 'We had an enjoyable time.'
And anything politically correct of course.

'Looking to' as in 'Are you looking to sell your car/go on holiday/get a lodger...?'

No! I may be thinking about it, or hoping to do it but I'm not looking to anything.

At a meeting to display the plans for a particularly dominating and aggressive building that is up for planning permission near me, the developer, when asked a perfectly straightforward and practical question about it, waffled that it was a portal. Portal to what? A portal is a gateway and this thing didn't lead anywhere but to itself.

If you must use "sayings" please get them right!

The proof is NOT in the pudding!!!

gettingonabit Wed 18-Nov-15 12:12:56

All of the above, particularly the use of adjectives as nouns as in "your best beautiful", find your happy" etc. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who objects to being called a "guy". Hate groups of children being called "guys" too.

My particular pet hate which hasn't been mentioned yet afaik is the word "source" in the context of "look for". Particularly on those rather pretentious cookery/design television programmes. It's no longer enough, it seems, to just go out and buy something, or google it on amazon. It has to be "sourced" as if acquiring something is a spectacularly clever skill. (unlike popping to the supermarket, lobbing said item in the trolley and whizzing it through the checkout, which is what most of us do).

Arggh!

rosequartz Wed 18-Nov-15 12:08:31

And what does 'Breaking Bad' mean?

rosequartz Wed 18-Nov-15 12:07:16

Hey you guys - back in the day speech was never like it is at this moment in time - like.

Indinana Wed 18-Nov-15 11:45:25

the phrase 'forever home' came into usage when adoption workers used it to help young children understand their final move (to adopters) as being 'forever'. It's now been widely adopted (excuse the pun) by animal charities.
Thanks Grannyactivist, that makes sense and the phrase is completely understandable in its original context.
Still hate it when used for pets, though - after all, it's not being used for the pets' benefit, but for the would be adopters, who don't need to have the situation so sensitively phrased!

I get called my "dog's mummy" - I really do not agree that I am a bitch!!

daffydil Wed 18-Nov-15 11:04:48

To be honest - I always want to say 'Are you usually dishonest?' Tony
Blair was a great one for saying this.

Absolutely instead of yes please when offered, say, a cup of tea.
