Mobile phone numbers

FarNorth I got one last week. Maybe it depends on the network. The robot messages I get are almost always from someone who sent the message to our landline by mistake (usually my Mum!)

I find that most systems like an email address too, which I prefer. I don't put a mobile number in as we have poor signal in our village and none at all in the house.

If you don't want to receive a text Auntieflo ( although I can't imagine why not it is quick easy and painless) oh reading your last post ( which I hadn't seen) as you don't have a mobile you ll probably to do the whole process the old fashioned way and ring for an appointment , but not mix and match old methods with new ones

Thanks all, it was the heat that got to me. I was melting , literally, like everyone else. Just can't get my head round the fact that we are all supposed to have a mobile.
Our dentist phones to remind us of an appointment, but then follows it up with, what I presume a text SMS? message. It sounds automated and not very clear.
We have just replaced our phones, land lines, with new ones that screen unwanted calls. It has been bliss, no cold callers.

I think that might have been me.

I've done that text to a landline read out by a robot thing, but I tried it the other day and it didn't work.
Maybe they don't do it any more?

I don't want to be phoned and a text confirming an appointment is fine by me. I also have the appointment time on my phone then too so I don't forget.

Was it someone on GN who pointed out that if you are filling in an online form which insists on a phone number you can put 01234567890? That satisfies the form without letting you in for unwanted calls or texts.

You can send a text message to a landline and it will be read out by an automated voice. The difficulty might be that the website might only accept a number in the recognised format of a mobile number.

Usually the text message is a reminder of your appointment, not about the initial booking, so it is an extra service rather than a replacement.

It's much easier to get a text, it would be automatically triggered by the computer, when booking online, whereas a phone call would involve a member of staff getting the message, phoning at an appropriate time, you being in to answer etc. If you don't want to get into the 21st century way, that's fine, but you'll just have to phone them yourself in that case. Can't see it's too much to get angry about personally. Sorry not to be too sympathetic! ?
