In my experience in Scotland a takeaway would be referred to as a "Kerry oot "!!

Americans are known to ask:

'Do you wannit to go'


meaning, would you like to take your coffee away with you or would you like to drink it in here?

I'm by peoples I thought it made perfect sense.

Scots would have no trouble with 'take-out coffee' as many Scots would still refer to 'carry oot' rather than 'takeaway'. Never heard of iced coffee? I used to enjoy that in Nairobi 50 years ago... until I became caffeine intolerant but that's another story.

I think OP is an American living in U.K. She would be used to good and efficient service in US with appropriate apologies when it falls short. I don't blame her for feeling peeved. No harm in take-away coffee if that's what she and her DD wanted.

I understand about the bad customer service, but so much of the stress could have been alleviated by simply making your own coffee!!!

Same here Annesixty. When I worked in a shop, it was impressed upon us the value to the business of good manners when dealing with the great British public.

OP was complaining about aggravation and poor service and no one apologized for this which is getting to be a daily happening. I would also be very annoyed.

I never have ice in drinks outside my own home if I can help it , but sometimes a drink appears with ice already in it....grrr.

Apparently traces of faeces have been found in the ice at a proportion of well-known coffee 'outlets'. Stick to the hot drinks, peeps. I go for the cake and cookiesl

American would definitely be elevator.Surely the coffee referred to is the takeaway variety rather than the drink in.Everywhere these days people seem to walk around drinking coffee.It is almost as indispensable as a mobile phone.Funny old world!No hands free for anything else.

Iced coffee?

Is the poster American? I have read and re-read, but can't make sense of it. I usually say "Coffee, to take away", maybe "take out coffee" is how it is said in USA.

I think that the word stroller was used indicates USA but I do not have a clue about take out coffee, never have and never would frequent coffee shops.
