THAT acronym

An innocent question from a relative newcomer to the site MawBroom.

My dad was English but bought the Scottish Sunday Post so I was familiar with the Broons, Oor Wullie and I think there was another cartoon called Nero and Zero. They kept me amused on Sunday afternoons which were very quiet in those days !

I also have never heard of Maw and Paw Broon other than in the context of maw and her beloved paw but it is obvious to all surely if paw was in bold and someone had seen the name on GN often, how could you possibly not understand who the lovely paw was. Sooty if you have been upset maw

I have a friend whose text messages are always full of acronyms. Takes me ages to work out what she means and it annoys me to death. Or am I just a GOW (grumpy old woman)!

I just thought anybody seeing Maw might have been able to make the “leap” to Paw

Well of course I ve read your posts Mawbroon and of course I knew when you lost you husband but grandtante said if you didn’t grow up in Scotland in the 50 or 60 s you wouldn’t know who Maw and paw Broon or Willie were so I presumed your name cane from some well known Scottish story or something Is that wrong ?

I do find the acronyms on Gransnet a bit off putting and puzzling. Its easier to read and understand posts without them. Maybe you get used to them over time. However I know if I was typing with one finger I would probably want to use abbreviations. I access Gransnet on a computer with a keyboard and was a 40 words a minute typist.

Teenage years - SWALK on the back of an envelope (yes, we sent letters in those days) - sealed with a loving kiss.

The only one I use is TLC which we have used in the Nursing profession for at least fifty years,so some acronyms arent new.I think everyone should show a little TLC

No, you are not being unreasonable, MawBroon. However, I suspect that those who did not grow up in Scotland in the 1950s or '60s have no idea who Maw and Paw Broon were, or Oor Wullie either.
