AIBU to hate this hot weather

As soon as the temperature goes over 23C I start to feel ill. I have to lie down somewhere cool as I feel weak and dizzy. The GP can do nothing to help apart from saying stay indoors out of the sun. Now everyone else is loving the weather, neighbours are out sunbathing and eating al fresco, local toddlers splashing in paddling pools etc and I'm laying on my bed day after day feeling awful. Sorry to moan but is anyone else in the same boat and can't wait until Autumn?

Sorry, but most of us are enjoying this 'unusual' spate of hot weather- and if its heat exhaution,or you suspect it is,get to your doctors pronto, get him to confirm it,and to suggest anything to help,in meantime, stay out of the sun, take cooler showers, get a magicool spray,an air cooler/air conditioner, several fans, cooling ice packs etc,and wear cotton looser clothing, all these ideas are common sense of course, wether you suffer heat exhaution or not, when its a heatwave, all hot weather can make you feel a bit dizzy if youre rushing to do things, take it slower, relax more, keep hydrated,i think heat can make us all feel more tired anyway, look how cats lounge in the sun?so try all of that, especially the doctors appt, then please stop moaningwinksorry.

You are not alone. Hot weather is not good news for me and, No, there is no treatment for it. Stay indoors with a fan on and lots of cool drinks - works for me.
Looking forward to the Winter!

I feel awful in the heat too. After a week of not sleeping I went for a lie down yesterday afternoon. I woke up feeling dizzy and sick. It took an hour to feel normal again. My hubby loves the hot weather. It seems to energise him. i.e. he wanted to invite all the family here today. That would mean doing a big shop for food and spending hours in the kitchen preparing it. I just don't have the energy for normal day to day living at the moment. Hubby also thinks it would be a great idea to take all the grandchildren to the seaside. Again the thought of it horrifies me. Sitting in the sun all day would kill me.

I don't like this hot weather, I think a lot of people don't. I have noticed some of the forecasters on TV slipping in an occasional"If you like hot weather", a nod to those of us who don't.

Med mode for me too.
I love sunbathing - I know all about the risks but I've done it all my life so not stopping now. Good tip is a to take an electric fan on an extension lead into garden & have it on your face & neck while you sit in sun. I can spend hours reading on a sunbed having done chores in early morning. Barbq for dinner to make more of the day.
Only problem is all the watering on of the plant pots & baskets.
Off to Greece next week where I believe it is about the same temperature as here.
I do sympathise with those who do not like the sun-I suffer all Winter!!

No, of course, you and others who feel unwell in hot weather are not being unreasonable. We are not all alike, are we?
Please, do make sure you get enough liquids and enough salt (unless there are any heath issues that make you use as little salt as possible).

I am one of the fortunate ones who adore the heat and are so full of energy - but wait till it starts raining and see me curl up with the cats and do nothing!

My daughter is in her early 30's and for the last 5 years as the temperature rises so do her nausea and giddiness levels. She is completely wiped out until the temperatures subside. She has a portable air conditioner at her house which really helps but unfortunately she is living with us at the moment so is unable to fit it in her room. She is taking Buccastem to take away the nausea but can't do much about the giddiness. It's very sad because whilst we are all revelling in the sunshine, she feels terrible.

Coolgran65..... !! Ironing?? People still do that!? Why??

holdingontometeeth Sun 01-Jul-18 11:26:09

It makes me unwell reading how the heat makes others feel unwell.
Meanwhile, I have decided to tackle the problem head-on.
Off into the back garden, smothered in sun lotion to lie motionless whilst the sunrays do their worst to accelerate the aging of my already wrinkly skin.
Will have to move later though as World Cup football starts at 3.00pm.
Life is sure a struggle.
Not enough hours in the day to do nothing.

I love hot sunny days, but DH has horrendous true hay fever (grass pollens) so can't cope between March and September and I'm not allowed to open any windows. But even I'm finding it hard to cope just now with lack of sleep - even outside the bedclothes too hot.

I have never been good in hot weather and always wanted to flop in the shade and not exert myself. Last year my son got married in Cyprus and on the day it was 40° plus! It totally ruined my day, i was an exhausted sweaty heap with unkempt hair and sticking to me clothes, it was such a beautiful day and i feel sad not to have enjoyed it.
For some reason during this current bout of heat i have been coping better and the only thing that is different is that i have lost weight due to a diabetes scare.
It is a shame to shut yourself away. Wear floaty cotton, always tie hair up if long, drink plenty of fluids, 2 ltrs of water a day, sit in the shade under a large parasol and spray yourself from a spray bottle of water kept in the fridge. Even put your head under a cool shower and dont dry it.
At night, just a sheet, preferably from the freezer, water by bed, previously frozen so it stays cold and cool shower before bed. I expect you've heard it all before!

I love it - as long as I don't have to travel anywhere! I used to perspire like mad in the heat but find I don't any more even though I drink a lot of water in this weather .

I'm another positive for this current spell (and it hasn't been that long) of wonderful weather. I'm a pretty miserable somewhat hibernater in the winter so I can't complain when this 'freedom' stuff indulges us. I'm able to stand and chat in the street interminably. Meet up with friends without toting umbrella, topcoat and cardigan. Garden to my heart's content. Oh, the benefits for me are innumerable. Even creosoted all the woodwork yesterday. Only been on the cards for a couple of years! Long may it continue! And, yes, I do sympathise with all for whom it brings problems but, unfortunately, that's life. I wonder what kind of weather we would have if we had the power to control it?

gillyknits Sun 01-Jul-18 10:35:23

I think the trouble is that we rarely get such long spells of hot weather here in England. We are used to an amazing variety of different climates (sometimes all in one day).
I think I’m bored with too much of the same. We could do with a few drops of rain, a cloud or two or even a great big thunder storm to relieve the monotony.

Blue45Sapphire Sun 01-Jul-18 10:31:31

Oh, I love this weather, and will look back fondly when we are in the depths of winter. Housework is all but forgotten except for the bare essentials; I'm only hoovering because my cats are moulting. Spending my time under my fruit trees reading, doing sudoku and crosswords. Odd bit of gardening now and again, watering in the evening. And then a nice gin and tonic or Pimms followed by wine with dinner. What's not to like?

Legs55 Sun 01-Jul-18 10:28:09

Just to cheer some of you, here in Devon we've had rain this morning so it's a little cooler (not a lot). I plan to do my ironing whilst it's a little cooler today, I've been ignoring it but I'm running out of shorts/cropped trousers to wearblush.

I like the sun but it has been too hot for me from 11 - 5 so I've stayed indoors choosing to go into the garden early morning or in the evening. I am Diabetic Type 2 so trying to keep a healthy diet although I love salads & fruit. I also have Hay Fever which has been really bad this year. Am I miserable? No I love the sun as long as there's a cooling breezesunshine

silvercollie Sun 01-Jul-18 10:27:10

Raining here! Been raining for the past 3 hours. Heavy too. Thunder later. Lovely - been dancing in it.

grannypauline Sun 01-Jul-18 10:22:43

People are variable (thank goodness)! In my family we have members who love the hot weather. One was happy in 40 degrees!! Of course she hated the cold. I personally get heatstroke and dehydrated if I'm not very careful in hot weather. On retirement I really really wanted to continue teaching In Africa but I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the heat.

As a child my family lived in the tropics so here are some tips:
Open windows at night. Beware mozzies so draw curtains tight or close windows when room is lit. Close windows in the morning when temp outside is warmer than inside.

In the daytime draw the curtains against the sun and close windows until the outside temperature is cooler than indoors. Thankfully we have currently had cool nights here.

Put half bottles of water in the freezer and top them up with tap water when you remove them. Drink this icy water in the daytime - learnt from backpackers in Greece!.

Eat a packet of crisps and tell yourself it's not an indulgence it's replacing salt lost through sweating!

Outside always walk and sit in the shade - choose the cafe table which gets most breeze.

Do the med stuff posted by others with a long siesta through the heat.

Hope this helps.

I love my garden, it needs constant attention to keep on top of it, i sympathise with you, I go out 10 mins do a bit come into my cool lounge to cool down then go out again, it takes ages to get anything done but it’s the only way I can cope with the heat. Nothing’s perfect, sometimes you just have to work with it.

Apricity Sun 01-Jul-18 10:09:16

As an Aussie we deal with hot weather and seriously hot weather every summer. I think we all struggle with weather that is outside our usual experience, whether that is much warmer or much colder. Either way you need to modify your behaviour and daily routines. For warmer weather do chores earlier, leave the ironing, simplify your food preparation (salads not roasts), stay well hydrated, wear loose cotton clothing not sythetics, buy a fan, use a water spray bottle to spray a fine mist over yourself and stand in front of the fan, wear a hat outside and rest and stay indoors as much as possible.

As I have got older, I struggle a bit with the heat, I need to be in the shade. I have a lovely swinging chair in the garden with a canopy that I lie on so am not in direct sunlight. When I go out I have a large brimmed hat I wear or a sun visor. I just find the heat very draining so won’t do anything too strenuous if I can avoid it.

sue01 Sun 01-Jul-18 09:54:20

I find a Gin and Tonic works. Plenty of ice.

BlueBelle Sun 01-Jul-18 09:52:30

I don’t think any of you are unreasonable to dislike hot weather but I do think it’s totally unreasonable to not ever want it, as we get so very little pleasant weather and those of us who like a bit of sun and warmth in our bones get a few odd weeks out of 12 blooming months and the minute the sun shines off it goes moan moan moan Totally understand anybody ill feeling uncomfortable but the general whining about a few days gets on my nerves It happens every time the sun is out more than two days on the trot
Brits are moaners no two ways about it

Charleygirl Sun 01-Jul-18 09:41:38

Just think of the amount of money you are saving on heating bills! I am fortunate, I have solar panels so hot water is free for me in this glorious weather.

I suppose it is because I have had major surgery recently but I have to have my cardigan close by!

annep Sun 01-Jul-18 09:24:46

no need to feel guilty loopyloo. This heat will make lots of us grumpy. I'm afraid there's nothing we can do about plants. I am however going to buy a rainwater barrel. And trying to eat sensibly is hard when its too hot to think about cooking. I too am trying to keep blood sugar down. and I really want a large ice cream! not half of a mini magnum. It wont last forever thankfully ?
