Seatbelt issue . .. AIBU

Shared a taxi with a friend this morning. we were both in the back and as we moved on she declined to put seatbelt on.

I pointed out that if we had a bump an unbelted person in the car was a danger to both of us and the driver. She said it wouldn’t happen but if it did it did.

She reacted as though I was a bit of a wimp, couldn’t seem to grasp that the issue was that even if she wasn’t concerned about her own safety I cared about mine!

AIBU to feel rather angry, with a reluctance to socialise with her any more?

I had a friend who refused to wear a seatbelt because it creased her clothes !

I used to drive local oldies who had trouble using public transport to various appts, for shopping, etc.

One old lady had trouble fastening her seat belt and didn't want me to do it for her, though I explained that it was necessary.
She said, 'I'll just hold it,' (!) and proceeded to hold the bit that goes in, next to the bit it goes into.

Needless to say, I had to insist!

In Australia you're fined on the spot if you don't have your rear seat belt on. This was so in the early 80's.

I couldn't find any information there as to whether the law concerning taxis is different, nor whether she could be sued if in the event of an accident other people in the vehicle were hurt because she had not fastened her seat-belt.

To be stupid about your own safety is daft enough but to be selfish about the safety of others (the driver or other passengers and road users, who would be traumatised for life) is sheer criminal selfishness.

It's illegal here in NZ not to be belted in anywhere and if you have children they must be in proper car seats, in the back only.

Does she realise the consequences of hurting or killing a child with her moronic attitude?

Give her a slap round the ears from me ! smile

You can`t educate the stupid sadly.

The driver is only responsible for persons under age wearing seat belts but as a taxi driver surely he/she should have insisted???

If my passengers don't "belt up" they either get out or we don't move! Simple!

Your friend is a total idiot and should visit the site of an RTC where someone wasn't wearing a seatbelt, not a pretty sight I can assure you!

This is a very old thread. Any point in reviving it when many aren't driving?

Anniebach how dreadful and you were so young at the time.

I come to this from the other end. DH's insistence on seatbelts and child restraints, long before they were common, let alone compulsory, saved our lives when a drunken driver turned out of a side road without looking, forced DH to break violently, swerve off the road and into a hedge.

DH and I were wearing seatbelts and our 9 month old son was in the back in one of the early Britax child seats. Without DH's care, DS would have been on my lap in the front and my unrestrained journey through the windscreen would have killed both of us.

A friend who talked and acted as this lady did, would be a friend no more

Spot on kittylester.
They both get fines and rightly so.
I wont drive off if a passenger in my car refuses to wear one.

According to the above, there is no exemption for passengers in the taxi, only the driver.

Next time, don't take a taxi with that friend.

my mother wouldn't put on a seat belt until I told her she would get the fine not me!

My DH was the opposite - he said (before it was compulsory) that he wouldn't wear it, but changed his mind when told the colleague who gave him lifts to work would get fined.
(I told him that and knew it wasn't true, btw, but he didn't.)

I didn't notice this thread was so old.

Post at 7.25 reported.

There is a sign in (most? Certainly black cabs) taxis saying it is a legal requirement.
End of.

Reported jordan3 who revived this thread. I would not risk clicking on the link.

The law changed recently all adults including the driver are legally required to wear a seat belt and are responsible if the dont, the driver must insist that under 14yrs wears a seatbelt, all sorts of detail regulations. www.thewindscreenco.co.uk/help-advice/uk-seat-belt-law-explained/.

It would not affect my friendship if a friend didn’t wear theirs, I would just remind them and leave it at that.

Ali08 Wed 16-Jun-21 14:23:13

I would still socialise with her but she needs to consider other people!!
If the cab is stopped, it's the driver that gets the fine for not making the passengers wear seat belts, although they could then charge the passengers extra to cover the fine!
If anyone is in the seat in front of her, she could very well cause their death and she could survive - would she want that on ber conscience?
Personally, in my own opinion, she's being stupid and uncaring and I'd rather not get in a cab with someone who has such disregard for others!!!

Sweetie222 You're reading of all the reasons why seat belts should be worn. In wish your friend could read them too,.

I'd feel rather angry, and I'd tell her why. If she still says the same then I'd break off socialising with her.
