To be shocked by Jeremy Kyle

My DH is addicted to Jeremy Kyle. I have asked him why this is and he just says it is because he cannot believe such people exist. The whole programme upsets me as I feel he is a nasty piece of work taking advantage of people less fortunate than ourselves and unable to help themselves. I have to go and sit in another room and even then I can still hear it.

Ooh MissA what do you mean smile

Out of all the non watchers here, there are some fairly strong opinions, gleaned apparently, from being at someone else's and it accidentally coming on for a few minutes.

Of course problems still exist if they don’t have an audience - it’s the morality of having an audience and actually the possibility that being on TV whilst not creating the problem could exacerbate it - for example children being teased afterwards by class mates. I also wonder at the insidious damage done to the audience both in the studio and at home and the blunting of their humanity and also falsely making them feel they know all about a range of social problems and the people involved. But I do wonder about the sort of person who chooses to watch this programme in the first place

So if there wasn't an audience for it, it wouldn't exist?

Anniebach Sat 01-Dec-18 08:21:25

If the people are used and abused then surely most at fault as those who watch the programme ?

Pat1949 Sat 01-Dec-18 00:31:16

Dragonfly46.Thats exactly how I feel. The programme is a disgrace as is Jeremy Kyle. The programme makes my blood boil. He talks to the people as though they're rubbish. People let themselves be used and abused for a few pounds whilst Kyle must make a good living out of them. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!

MissAdventure Fri 30-Nov-18 23:38:49

Ah yes, I saw that too.
Wasn't quite sure what it was. smile
Get on my wick, they do!

MaryEliza, I have wondered that the guests on the JK show generally seem to be the poorer sort of people. There are usually multiple causes for any events. The motives imputed by some of the grans are very likely true; fame for a day, free hotel accommodation overnight, the glamour of telly.
As for the audience, at home and in the studio, although some people gloat others want to understand more about human nature and the troubles we get into. It's the same with gossip generally; some gossip is malicious and some gossip is sympathetic. I , like so many others here, (although they seem not to recognise the fact) have been lucky not to have found myself homeless on the streets and maybe turning to drugs as my only escape from hopelessness.

Anniebach Fri 30-Nov-18 13:09:23

True Elegran, I did mean some Mums and Dads because we are discussing the people on the JK programme.

Anniebach Fri 30-Nov-18 13:06:41

MaryEliza, which of his poems are you referring to?

Elegran Fri 30-Nov-18 13:02:35

Larkin was only right about some Mums and Dads. The vast majority bring up their kids without all those hangups and neuroses. It is just that the hangups etc are more visible and cause so much more trouble from one generation to the next, to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Alexa there will always be audiences eager to observe the pain, humiliation, exploitation and degradation of others from the Romsn Coliseum, to the stocks and public executions, Bedlam, and now JK. We should be better than that now - human misery should not be a form of entertainment. If anyone wants to understand the human condition and even better try to alleviate it there are plenty of sources of information and opportunities to help without going near that odious self important little man. Still we all know why bread and circuses are encouraged don’t we? Superb for othering and deflecting from the real causes of our woes whilst trying to fool as that it is all the victims fault.

ab on a more uplifting note, have you read Adrian Mitchell’s version?

Anniebach Fri 30-Nov-18 12:41:48

Maryeliza, yep Larkin was so right

Alexa Fri 30-Nov-18 12:21:47

MaryEliza, you could be right. Some of the replies by grans are so respectable that they pressed my button and I felt that I had to say that the guests on JK are ordinary humans too. Professional counselling is too expensive for most people, and at least a few exhibionists are served by JK.

However I do wonder at the grinning laughing audience. I watch JK with the seriousness that human stories merit.

As Philip Larkin said ab

And those who are judged to lead vile lives and inflict it on their children may well have had it inflicted on them by their parents.

Mycatisahacker Fri 30-Nov-18 11:20:44

I never understand comments like ‘well if that’s your only problem’!!! Bizarre comment on. Not every thread has to be about a serious issue. Wierd.

Mycatisahacker Fri 30-Nov-18 11:18:06

It’s nithing to do with money. Watch housewives of Cheshire who are all multi millionaires and they scream and shout at each other.

Some people just lead vile lives and sadly inflict themselves on their poor children.

Who would want to watch such people on any programme.

Lilypops Thu 29-Nov-18 23:27:56

Elegran , Well said about Mabon , I don't know why she/he posts on GN
.she /he never has a nice comment ,, must be a truly unhappy nasty person

Foxyloxy Thu 29-Nov-18 22:17:54

Unfortunately, I know that people who appear on the show exist. It is a huge exploitation of I would say of vulnerable people. Who might be able to shout about how they are treated in their homes. Not realising their vunerabilities are pumped up, making them feel all important, and totally unaware that they a cheap television. People who watch it, sit their to mock or preen smugly. Very sad.

I tend to ‘walk away’ from threads that upset me - politically, emotionally, etc. Another day, another thread - life’s too short to persist with something that hurts us?
