..... I own a b***dy sweet shop and I've been given 5 lots of chocolates most of which I sell in my shop. I wouldn't mind but all of these are from friends who know me well. Am I just turning into a grumpy old bag or it it reasonable to expect a bit more thought.

Re gift.. It's the thought that counts grumpy??

sunseeker Fri 27-Dec-19 11:12:52

As mentioned to a friend, I do wonder how people think of me as this year almost everything I received was something to eat! I did also receive some "smellies" so I am assuming my friends think of me as someone who is fat and smelly tchgrin

SirChenjin Fri 27-Dec-19 11:33:39

Oh dear - that’s pretty bad! grin

I don't know there's a sort of logic there, if lazy: "she has a sweetshop therefore likes sweets and choc so..."

Personally I avoid ppls "specialist" subject (e.g. wouldnt give a wine buff wine etc) but I can kinda see the thought process.

rosenoir Fri 27-Dec-19 11:43:18

Its the thought that counts and there was no thought at all in those gifts.

My DIL gave me Yankee candles for my recent birthday and same again for Christmas.

Daisymae Fri 27-Dec-19 12:23:00

Can't you just add them to your stock? Then you can buy something else!

sodapop Fri 27-Dec-19 12:24:08

I agree rosenoir

Shelmiss Fri 27-Dec-19 12:51:02

I disagree, it’s not the thought that counts, as in this instance there was no thought whatsoever! Would you give a gift of a pair of shoes to someone who owns a shoe shop, for example?

Urmstongran Fri 27-Dec-19 12:58:33

Oh heck - I bet you were totally underwhelmed when you unwrapped them!

lemongrove Fri 27-Dec-19 13:05:00

Yes, lack of thought!
Ask for flowers only next year?

Tedber Fri 27-Dec-19 13:21:45

Perhaps there was some thought gone into it - maybe they were bought from your own shop mumski - to keep you in business and you could re-sell them? smile

I don't actually like receiving boxes of chocolates as presents either (although would never complain). However, IF I owned a sweet shop I might just hope that not many people felt like me bahaha.

But....I don't think you can actually ASK for something lemonsgrove - or maybe you can if they ask you what you want?

I'm glad you made me feel justified being grumpy about the chocolates.
One of the boxes was Mint flavoured Lindor, which I literally couldn't give away to anyone, including the lovely man who delivered our curry last night..... and don't even start me on the Ferraro Roche tchshock. How can I stop them without offending them?

QuaintIrene Sat 28-Dec-19 15:43:59

Regift.
To me.
Sorted ?

MawB Sat 28-Dec-19 17:14:48

I gave many bottles of home infused bergamot and bay gin, blackberry vodka and cherry vodka - and was given many bottles of slow gin!
They know me too well!

SirChenjin Sun 29-Dec-19 10:25:42

Mint Lindor is one of our family favourites - we’ll happily take them off your hands!

love0c Mon 30-Dec-19 08:27:53

I love chocolates!!!!! I will send you my address!! ha ha smile

MawB Mon 30-Dec-19 08:37:27

Oops, iPad never heard of “sloe gin” it seems!

My eldest daughter splashed out a small fortune in buying me a nice M&S glass candle holder and posh sweet smelling Yanky style candle to go with it. The problem is that l cannot use these candles as l am Asthmatic, and the smell of them burning sets me off coughing big time, and results in me gasping for my inhalers. I don’t want to hurt her feelings, so l have just left it on display in my dining room for now, it’s huge, and not something that could be burned outside at a bbq and gone in an hour or so. I will probably keep it to take on holiday with me next year and burn it out on the balcony of our caravan in the fresh air to keep the mozzies at bay, lm sure she would be horrified if she realised her mistake and gifted me something that could potentially make me ill and needing a trip to hospital for nebulisers!

Hetty58 Mon 30-Dec-19 08:51:19

Maybe, like me, other people just buy an assortment of presents when shopping (without a thought about who gets what). There's quite enough to do at Christmas. I'm sure my friends and relatives don't really care what they get.

Anything that you don't want or need can be 're-gifted' (handy for new year parties) or go to the charity shop!

grandtanteJE65 Mon 30-Dec-19 11:08:27

I would feel justified in your place in pointing out next year that as the proprietor of a sweet-shop I really do not want chocolates as presents.

Wine, flowers, plants for the garden will be gratefully received, Chocolates will be sent return to sender!

grandtanteJE65 Mon 30-Dec-19 11:10:34

Hetty, why give presents if they are not chosen for the recipient? In your place, I would stop giving presents as it is obviously such a chore!

Charity shops won't want chocolates!

Happygirl79 Mon 30-Dec-19 11:12:37

People are sometimes lazy and pretty thoughtless
I would forgive them but say please no more chocolates.. I'm surrounded by them every day at work and don't want more!

craftyone Mon 30-Dec-19 18:34:04

I just ate a few from a christmas box from hotel chocolat, they were rubbish, poor flavour and texture
