Is anyone else becoming neurotic?

We've only been isolating and disinfecting for a couple of weeks and already it seems like a couple of months (well, to me it does!) So, it seems to be affecting our psyches quite deeply.

I reckon that by the time this bug is done, I'll be so OCD autopilot about handwashing and touching things/not touching things that it'll take months and months to get out of the habit. I'll probably keep some of the saner things I'm doing ;-)

Yes, I see what you mean now.

I know bacteria aren't viruses, but when people are getting so ludicrously up tight about angels dancing, sorry viruses, on the top of a pin. I thought I would just point out the extent of bacteria on and in the body as a counter balance.

I was instantly suspicious of the text (not written in a scientific manner) so looked up John Hopkins University.

It's a reliable US medical site. Next, I looked for your information and, unsurprisingly, can't find it there.

Fake safety information can give a false sense of security. Some of it is wildly inaccurate e.g. Listerine original is less than 30% alcohol.

Although I realise that your intentions are good, passing on false information is dangerous to others.

What about all the trillions of bacteria in your body, couple of kilos in the gut I believe. Not to mention the billions on your skin, some so specialised, that for instance that they only live in your eyebrows.

If your body was completely clear of all bacteria you would probably die. The relationship is symbiotic.

Well, I don't go ott. Had unwashed grapes straight out of the box yesterday. They go mouldy quicker if you wash them.
Amazon parcel just now, yes, washed my hands twice after opening it and disposing of packaging, then again, I'm not high risk or vulnerable so I'm not going to worry myself into an early grave.
All this will affect your mental health...if you allow it.
Normal sensible precautions and sticking gov rules are enough.

We’re doing much the same routine as GagaJo with deliveries. We’re not going out at all, except my husband takes my elderly mother’s share of the delivery around to her flat. Our son brings the click and collect delivery. I have asthma and we both take high blood pressure tablets. My asthma is the bigger worry as I get very bad with chesty coughs etc.

I think we’ve all got to do the best we can, and not drive ourselves mad doing it. Realistically, these viruses are tiny. Many millions on the tip of a pin. I don’t believe we can ever wipe them all away, no matter how stringent our cleaning practices. I do the best I can, but always assume I’ve missed one. Keeping your hands away from your face is key, but the tricky bit.

We’ve just had a grocery delivery. I washed the freezer/chilled stuff with washing-up liquid and binned all cardboard packaging. I’ve got a 3 day ‘quarantine’ self in the fridge for produce.

The dry goods sit in the porch for 3 days.

We had our first ever food delivery from M'sons yesterday. Very impressed by timing, delivery and friendliness of driver. He was very professional but spent time explaining stuff. Not a "dump and go" situation. All the goods came from a distribution point, not the local store, so I reasoned that staff would have been gloved up etc and no random people had been touching the goods before we did. I wiped surfaces down after unpacking food but didn't wipe down packets or leave food for 72 hours. I have to agree with an earlier comment that using too many chemicals won't do us good anyway. DH has allergies. We've both had the virus but continue to maintain a good standard of hygiene in case the beast returns. It must be more difficult for folk with health problems.

GGMk3, thanks for that. a timely reminder. i have passed it on to others who have not yet discovered the wonders of this esteemed site.
i ususally wash clothes etc at 20 or 30 centigrade, as those are the shorter programmes, but i do always add laundry disinfectant to the softener section.
and i use a specialist washing machine cleaner from time to time.
apparently the areas that are missed in washing hands are the backs of the hands where the fingernails emerge from the fingers, the cuticle/ bed of the nail area.
the use of a nail brush helps.

I had a toy delivery for granddaughters to keep them occupied. I sanitised the plastic wrap then binned it then sanitised the box. My husband passed me my letters delivered by the postman in the bedroom. I was furious why did he bring it upstairs he said "well the postman had gloves on" No it's not ok he has handled everyone elses post. I don't think it's paranoia it's men being on a different wavelength.

From what I’ve read, you can only get Covid from surfaces if you handle the packaging and then touch your mouth/nose/eyes. You can’t get it via the skin. so, as my 2yo GD says, ‘Nanna, WASHYOURHANDS!’

GG thank you for the clarification though I'd say that for washing clothes I'd go for hotter than a 30 degree wash if I suspected contamination.

GracesGranMK3 yes, I've heard most of that, thanks for the comprehensive list! I'd heard that it stays longest on metals. And that masks are useless if they're anything less than high tech, individually fitted ones.

This suggests that you might get it from contaminated surfaces but maybe not as badly as from an infected person. If you still get it, just don't cough near anyone.

My husband is vulnerable and I'm doing all I can to stay clear, although it is very like a bug I had in January after a day with a group of Italians who had spent Christmas in Italy. My husband didn't catch it!
