Supper on the sofa?

DH and I have firmly got into the habit of eating supper on the sofa in front of the TV. I wonder how many of you do this also?

Use the sofa when it’s just two of us..... if grandchildren come to eat and stay we use the table..... must keep the standards up that they have been set.... and I set my kids. But if we have a ‘bargain bucket’ from KFC .... everybody hunkers around the coffee table and eats from the bucket with fingers..,, else what’s the point,of the take-away.?

Supper is late evening here too, dinner around 6pm at the table .

Rocking chair for me...always eat with food on lap. I do have a table but never use it.

After re-reading the thread title - does supper mean evening meal? As in dinner? We would refer to a pre-bed snack as supper here, so a cuppa and biscuits. Which would likely be on the sofa.

No rule here.

If there are just me and DH we will eat at the breakfast bar. If DS is here (which he is right now for the forseeable) then there is n't room for that so we eat at the dining table. Sometimes though if it's late and there is a tv show we need to catch up on then will eat in the lounge - with plates on laps.

Today's lunch was outdoors as it is a beautifully sunny day and there may be a shortage of those after today.

More comfortable at the table, less messy. Wipe the table when done, then head for sofa with a cuppa, feet up. Rarely eaten dinner on my lap, not when a table is available.

My OH did shift work until he retired so we often had our meals separately and always used the dining room even when eating alone. We still do as I dislike eating when I'm all scrunched up on the sofa.

We always eat at our kitchen table. The proper table in the front room only used high day and holidays.

We eat all our meals at the table, although when younger we ate off trays. I now unfortunately suffer with reflux and I find it exacerbates the problem if I try to eat from a tray balanced on my lap.

We ate supper on the sofa while DH's broken collar bone was mending, as he was more comfortable there than sitting at the table.

But we have moved back to the table now for dinner, at least, as we both prefer eating there.

We have breakfast and lunch at the table but dinner is always on the chairs in the lounge, it’s been this way ever since the kids left home. Only time it changes is if we are looking after one of the grandkids at night then we have dinner at the table

never . i use a table . maybe a sandwich on the sofa .but all other meals are up the table.i live alone .but thats how i been bought up.

Thecatshatontgemat Sat 09-May-20 13:02:48

Never ever.
Too much vomiting is shown in full graphic detail.
Bad enough when sitting down properly to watch a show, but whilst one is eating........?!?!?!? NO NO NO.

I’m doing it a lot more these days. I have a dining table and chairs, a throwback from my last (bigger) property. Now it seems to overpower my small lounge so I’m seriously considering getting rid of it. It seats 8 and as I very rarely entertain and am only 1 ? ? I’ll try and sell it after the lockdown and play it by ear when I get company.

We eat at the breakfast bar in the kitchen when it's just the two of us, if we have family/visitors we eat at the dining table in the dining room. There is no TV in either room and phones are discouraged during meals too.

Just another option I love is strong earl grey in place of the water and no spice. Lovely, think I'll make one right now!

Bluegrass Sat 09-May-20 12:32:06

Paddyanne - same recipe quantities I've used for decades but use brown sugar or half and half plus a half teaspoon of mixed spice. These days I use flora light to cut down the cholesterol and it comes out just the same, delicious!

Callistemon Sat 09-May-20 12:22:32

paddyanne I just made one of those for DH (his birthday was this week), I made it with black tea, just normal strength made in a cup, instead of the plain water. He's really enjoying it, it's very moist, I'm trying to avoid eating it!
We always called it Australian Boiled Fruit Cake.
I hadn't made one for years.

Daisyboots Sat 09-May-20 12:15:42

When the children were at home we always had meals at the table with no television on.
Now the only time we eat at the table is when we have visitors so not at all at the moment. I am lucky to have breakfast in bed every day.

Paddyanne I shall try your recipe for boiled fruit cake as it sounds so easy especially as I cant stand for long.

paddyanne Sat 09-May-20 11:55:40

Nannan the simplest fruit cake on the planet ,boil 4 fluid oz of water with 4 oz of sugar 4 oz of butter and 8 oz of mixed fruit for 5 minutes or so,let cool slightly add 8 oz of SR flour 2 teaspoons of bicarb and two beaten eggs and cook in the oven for 45 minutes or until firm. Its our go to when the OH wants fruit cake ,sometimes I put slug of brandy in the water the fruit boils in and some mixed spice.Keeps him happy

Sometimes we eat off trays in front of the TV but others at the dining table in our conservatory. Depends on the circumstances really.

GrandmaMoira Sat 09-May-20 11:13:47

I always eat at the dining table. Eating on the sofa gives me indigestion and I am likely to spill things. I am surprised there are so many sofa eaters who obviously don't have these issues.
I also wonder what kind of house people have with a kitchen big enough for a table and chairs and a separate dining room. They sound very grand.

BusterTank Sat 09-May-20 11:12:52

The only time we eat at the table is if we have company or it's Christmas .

maryhoffman37 Sat 09-May-20 11:04:24

Nope. Always on the kitchen table (dining room is for lunches and dinners with friends and family - remember those?)

babzi Sat 09-May-20 11:00:32

I do both. Whatever suits me at the time. If I have guests we eat at the table though
