Supper on the sofa?

DH and I have firmly got into the habit of eating supper on the sofa in front of the TV. I wonder how many of you do this also?

We always have our meals at the kitchen table. No TV, just the radio on.

But we’ve hardly any fruit left till the next delivery comes on Monday, so I resorted to eating the prunes today. Out of the tin, in front of the computer. It doesn’t count because nobody saw me. blush

We've been eating outside in this nice weather.
Otherwise its usually the kitchen table although I did have cheese and biscuits on my lap this evening in front of the telly.

There are puzzles spread out on the dining table.

We don't feel comfortable sitting on the sofa eating a main meal, don't people get indigestion?

Shouldn’t be typing this but - table always for Shabbat - ?

Not since we had to get rid of the staff lemon.

Breakfast on the table because the sun is in the dining room in the morning. Lunch this time of year in the garden if the weather is fine. Supper on our laps. The napkin problem ok as we have different colours. Only use our white ones for posh dinners.

If my ( rather clumsy) DH had supper on the sofa.....that’s exactly where the supper would be.

lemongrove Fri 08-May-20 21:34:11

Ellan ?

lemongrove Fri 08-May-20 21:33:29

kitty.....you mean to say that you don’t have a fresh napkin each for every meal, am shocked! ?

A tray on my lap---unless I have dark chocolate digestives then it's the table. If I'm eating them sitting on the sofa, even with a tray, you can guarantee that a piece of chocolate will find itself in/ down the front of my trousers !
I had on a light grey pair last week and putting them on next day sure enough there was a dark brown mirror image on each leg at the top looking pretty ominous so in the wash they went.

Breakfast and lunch at the table, and dinner mostly on our laps watching the news at 6.

I don't have a tray, but use a placemat on my lap. I have nice thick cloth ones that wash easily.

Glad I'm not the only one Westcoaster we have trays on the sofa too and I always manage to spill something down my front.

We always eat at the table in the kitchen.
At one time we would sometimes eat in front of the telly if there was something we particularly wanted to watch, but a) it always seemed a faff to carry through to the lounge the salt & pepper, salad dressing, wine, wine glasses, & cutlery rather than just plonking them all in the kitchen table and b) it just felt less comfortable, as the food wasn’t being digested properly.
And then we had to cart everything back to the kitchen.
We don’t have TV in the kitchen and that’s the way I like it.

Unless there’s anyone else eating with us, we always have trays on laps for dinner.
One reason, not that we need one! - is that our dining table is my office cum work table, and very often covered with paperwork, knitting/sewing paraphernalia, etc.

How would we know who owned which napkin, welbeck?

Gingster Fri 08-May-20 20:42:36

We have breakfast and Sunday lunch at the table but most other times on trays on our laps. I would like to sit at the table for every meal but DH likes to relax on the sofa. He always spills food on his jumper and sitting all hunched over isn’t good for digestion. Oh well!

welbeck Fri 08-May-20 20:33:04

i thought napkin rings were considered rather infra dig.

rubysong Fri 08-May-20 20:19:56

Breakfast in bed for me, not for DH who gets up after a cuppa. Lunch (sandwich and apple) in front of bargain hunt. Evening meal (dinner/tea/supper whatever) at the dining table with napkins.

We always eat a knife and fork meal at the dining table. Something we have always done. Ours is a living room/dining room, the TV or radio is usually on. Sarnies and stuff like that we eat on the sofa. (Wary of stating this but DH is rather accident prone (clumsy?) so eating say spag bol from plates on our laps doesn’t bear thinking about).

oldgimmer1 Fri 08-May-20 19:17:55

I never eat by a table unless out for a meal or at someone else's.

I always eat in my glasses as well - the food looks biggergrin.

grannyrebel7 Fri 08-May-20 19:11:39

We eat on the sofa in the lounge in front of the TV Mon - Sat, but on Sunday we have a proper roast dinner on the table in the dining room. Also if the family or friends visit we eat at the table. Don't know how this habit of eating in front of the TV evolved as when our kids were home we never did this.

kittylester Fri 08-May-20 18:55:00

phienix, just wanted to cover all bases. grin

jusnoneed Fri 08-May-20 18:34:15

All our meals are eaten while sitting in our armchairs in the living room. We only have a small bench table in the kitchen (made by a friend to fit the space, for the grandkids when they were small and used to see us) which isn't very comfortable for adults.
No telly on usually, hard enough to find something to watch in the evening and just about impossible during the day.

Missfoodlove Fri 08-May-20 17:58:42

ethelteabags1 You have got me all wrong!
I am not shaming anyone.
I have to eat at a table, I just do not enjoy sitting on a sofa to eat.
Television was rationed when the children were little and mealtimes were for engaging with each other not watching TV so my 3 would laugh at the hypocrisy.
Food is an important part of my adult life as when I was a child mealtimes were fraught.
I developed an eating disorder, to overcome it I had to make eating a happy and positive experience.
