Supper on the sofa?

DH and I have firmly got into the habit of eating supper on the sofa in front of the TV. I wonder how many of you do this also?

We used to until we had a small table built into our new kitchen. Now we always eat there - we both think it's much more comfortable eating at a table than slumped in a sofa. We have a TV above the table though - often catch up on missed documentaries and things and discuss them while we have our meal.

The sofa is for a snack or cup of tea and biccy while we relax at other times.

It's also much more convenient - everything is in cupboards around us so don't need to load trays up with sauces, salt, pepper, cutlery, bread and butter.... just bung it on the table. Also quicker to clear away and load everything into the dishwasher.

We always use napkins/serviettes (not linen but cotton) and have our own rings even if we are eating from a tray on our knees. Mustn't let standards slip. grin

On Saturdays, we have takeaway, trays on our laps, a bottle of wine and a film from Amazon Prime. ??? My mother wouldn’t approve and she certainly wouldn’t like to see the squares of kitchen paper that we use for napkins...

On the other days, we eat at the dining table in our kitchen diner. ?

Always at the moment. The table is currently in my bedroom masquerading as my desk. Occupying its place is a large climbing frame and slide.

We enjoy a meal on a tray in the conservatory watching a quiz. The chairs there are just right.

Lap tray and news for us. I hate sitting at the table. Always have done. When the children were young I often sat on the sofa while OH and children sat at table.

Always have supper on knees watching TV. As a corona virus concession to standards we have Sunday lunch in the dining room even if it's only soup and sausage rolls.

We have a lounge diner, so the table is convenient. But on the rare occasion we have a pizza delivered, for some reason it's dished up on the dining table, but eaten on the sofa.

I prefer eating at a table as there's less chance of me leaving a trail of whatever I've had down my front grin. Plus, my large (but reducing - yay) belly leaves little or no room on my short legs to balance a tray.

I do try to keep supper OFF the sofa though! grin

merlotgran Fri 08-May-20 15:46:26

It's either or in our house. Depends on what we're eating.

Yes we do it too. And after a busy day gardening, we have a shower and put our pjs on. Casual or not!!!!

That’s right puzzler61 mines ongoing though but hey! Just do what you feel most comfortable with.

SueDonim Fri 08-May-20 15:19:16

At the table for us. We’ll have nibbles on the sofa but neither of us find it very comfortable to eat meals in chairs - too much of a balancing act!

SirChenjin Fri 08-May-20 15:18:08

Only ever eat at the table and never with the TV on - it’s one of the times we come together as a family and no screens of any kind are allowed. If I lived on my own I’d probably do it though - Repair Shop, glass of wine and something tasty on a plate on a lap tray sounds v nice.

I have a large table in the kitchen but gave up eating there a long time ago. It felt lonely sitting there on my own at a table for at least six.
I always eat sitting on the sofa with the tv on. Much nicer.

TrendyNannie6 and so you should if you’ve been poorly. You need TLC. ?

ninathenana Fri 08-May-20 15:06:22

We have a through lounge diner and can see the TV from the dining table, so most meals are eaten at the table.
There is a vinyl protector covering the table. The only time I use a table cloth is at Cxxxmas.
Friday and Saturday evening meals are very relaxed and usually eaten in the lounge end of the room

We have a kitchen dining room, and always eat at the table!

Although my mother would be very disapproving as there are no linen napkins or napkin rings shock

Charleygirl5 Fri 08-May-20 14:22:25

I have been on my own for many years and it is a tray on my lap when watching TV. I got rid of my table a few years ago when I stopped entertaining. We dine out instead.

This is a modern house and really there is little space for a table and chairs.

TrendyNannie6 Fri 08-May-20 14:22:13

And guess what when I’ve been ill I’ve had a tray brought up to me in bed leaning back on my v pillow eating my meals, watching the tele

grannysyb Fri 08-May-20 14:21:41

Eat at the table in our little breakfast room next to the kitchen. We have a television in there so can watch if we want to. If we have drinks and nibbles we have them in the sitting room. Each to his own.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 08-May-20 14:19:33

Ours is a home, a home to relax in and be comfortable so if we want to eat while sat on the sofa we do and it is nearly all the time. Sometimes I sit in the garden and eat breakfast or lunch, but evening meal i on the sofa watching the news.

Puzzler61 Fri 08-May-20 14:14:29

When it’s just the two of us it’s lap trays in the lounge.
My DS and BIL always eat at the table in their kitchen, but they have a TV on wall in theirs and we don’t.

Oldwoman70 Fri 08-May-20 14:10:40

Sometimes I do - depends on what time I eat. If it is early and I want to watch the news, it's on a tray sitting on the sofa - if it is later it is at the table.

Really don't see a problem with it - if it is what people are comfortable with. I know someone who since being widowed eats all her meals in front of the TV as it gives her the illusion that she is not eating alone.

TrendyNannie6 Fri 08-May-20 14:07:49

Totally agree with you Etheltbags! Made me laugh out loud, not us either. We like to relax in our home, and relaxing means simply kicking back on our recliners with our trays on our laps watching tele and having our cake and eating it ??our AC do the same in their homes too,
