Aibu to put the heating on? Have you put yours on yet? This is the first day I've felt chilly. My wall thermometer says it's 20C inside but this is an old house & my feet & hands are cold. I wanted to hold on longer before switching it on but I don't think I can.

My heating has been on for an hour at a time for the last few days.
It was cold here this morning, and when I turned up the thermostat it clicked on at 16°. I am going to put it on for a couple of hours before we go to bed, just to warm the rooms through.
This is a cold house, it faces east, and in the winter we don't see much sunshine.

Still wearing t-shirts, shorts and sandals down here on the IoW. As I write this the sun is blazing through the rooflights in the dining room where I'm sewing and it's
getting too warm to stay here. But it was a bit nippy in the bathroom this morning so I might turn on the heated towel rail and perhaps put our lecky blankie back on the bed ready for it getting cooler. We don't usually start using our heating till early November. We have a solid fuel boiler which has to be cleaned out and relit every morning so we're used go getting up to cold rooms.

My heatings is always on I too live in an old house and I need the heating on to warm it up. The only issue is my DH wants it lowered and I want it higher. Up down up down I’ve got the hive on my phone so that I can alter the heating from a distance if I find the house has gone cold wink

Luckylegs Fri 25-Sept-20 16:56:34

I’ve just put my heating on to come on for a little while in the morning and in the evenings totally! I’ve also dug out my lovely electric overblanket! It’s now on the bed ready! If I go to bed with cold feet, it takes hours for me to go to sleep.

I think you're entitled to be warm. However, at this time of year, if I'll be spending some time in just one room, I often have the gas fire on for an hour in the evening rather than heat the whole house. I also put thicker socks and an extra layer on if I feel chilly. I have a fleecy, man's shirt I use for this. I call it my ugly shirt because it really is rather unattractive.

I dread the Winter in our house, it is sooooooo cold! In a heatwave it is ideal, just a little cool. I grew up in an enormous Victorian house where we had ice flowers etched on the windows each morning and at weekends my sister and I would wait to hear the rattle of the coal scuttle before we ventured out from under the covers. I swore when I grew up I would have heat in every room but who could have foreseen the rise in power costs. Every year around this time my DH and I have the Big Row about the Heating! When we dragged our ancient central heating into the twenty-first century DH told the builder we would turn the heat on as we needed it, which as far as he's concerned is when snow is on the ground! We've just had this year's row, I am reduced to tears (at least they're warm). And apparently I only have to ask if I want it on. But, really, it's only September you know. I have MS and when I'm in one position for any length of time and am cold (as at night)I seize up like a rusty old jalopy. Getting downstairs to put the heating on in the morning in Winter is positively hazardous.

SueDonim Fri 25-Sept-20 15:35:48

I’ve got three layers on and am still cold! There’s a limit to how much clothing anyone can wear and still be able to move. grin

Kim19 Fri 25-Sept-20 15:28:53

I put on a thicker layer top and bottom. So far so good.......

It is interesting to read about costs. My gas and electric this month were £42, naturally it will be higher each month onwards. Its a 4 bed new build detached.

No pensioner should be too cold, I read on money saving expert sometimes about people wrapping up head to toe and saying they are in 12 degrees. We all get a winter heating allowance

Our heating is never switched off. It doesn't come on when its warm and it is easy to override the control if we decide we need it. We don't have a general rule about it being off for summer....as here in Scotland summer can be non existent some years. Fortunately this summer has been not too bad....but heating on when we feel cool. ?

cupcake1 Fri 25-Sept-20 15:12:01

Heating on in this house but only during the early morning/evening but it usually clicks in on its own anyway. I hate being trussed up in layers of clothing just to keep warm.

Dareyouto Fri 25-Sept-20 15:04:38

My thermostat has been switched to ‘on’ and that’s how I leave it until about April. I hate the cold and due to poor circulation maybe I feel it more than others.
Why deny yourself heat at any time?
I never even switch my heating off at night as, for some inexplicable reason, it’s always that bit chillier upstairs - I know it should be warmer upstairs but it’s not in this house.
By the way, my house is a 2 bed semi and I have just had my direct debit amended from £57 per month down to £45 and am awaiting a £140 refund. This is on dual fuel too and like I said I am at home all day and hate to feel chilly. In my case never turning it off seems to pay.

I turned my heating on yesterday morning as it was chilly. Changed my duvet up to my warmer tog too, but night sweats a nightmare last night so going back down to my 4.5 today. I'll take a hot water bottle at night for when I first get in and then kick it out once my own heating system kicks in....

sharon103 Fri 25-Sept-20 14:16:13

We put ours on last night mainly to make sure it still works.
It does. smile

travelsafar Fri 25-Sept-20 13:38:31

We have put our's on this lunchtime as defo a big change in the temperature. Nothing worse than feeling the cold.

inishowen Fri 25-Sept-20 13:28:23

Mine is on. I turn it on any time I feel chilly.

Greciangirl Fri 25-Sept-20 13:13:55

Put some extra warm clothing on.
It’s not winter yet,
On Tuesday, I was wearing a sundress. Admittedly, I wouldn’t be wearing it today, Friday.

Will hold out a little longer as weather will probably change yet again.

jacq10 Fri 25-Sept-20 13:09:11

Put it on - even if just for an hour to take the chill off the house. It's what we get the heating allowance for in November.

biba70 Fri 25-Sept-20 12:59:53

Got long trousers, socks and a vest under my long-sleeve t-shirt for the first time this year. And yes, I have put radiators on just a bit, in kitchen and connecting lounge.

pen50 Fri 25-Sept-20 12:52:39

As round here we seem to have missed out on the hot summer that everyone else had - it was lovely in May but after that it was pretty awful - I <whispers> never turned it off....

Destin Fri 25-Sept-20 12:51:40

Funny you should ask this question.....just opened an email from a dear friend who finished by saying “it’s raining and cold here this morning, so just turned the heating on to try and warm up the house ”.........and I had said just to my husband “open the living room door....it’s so warm in here, the sun is lovely”. My friend is in England and I’m here in Canada! We’re having an unseasonably warm Autumn....but I know for sure our turn will come once this is over!

GrauntyHelen Fri 25-Sept-20 12:49:00

Do you pay the bill if yes put on the heating if no consult the bill payer then put the heating on!

collius Fri 25-Sept-20 12:39:44

Like kwest I too have an electric throw. Best thing ever. I bought one for my daughter and she loves it. Friends have got them too. Ideal for these evening when it’s a bit chilly but not really cold. Treat yourself.

grandtanteJE65 Fri 25-Sept-20 12:15:26

We never turn our off. We turn the radiators right down during the summer, but as the municipel plant supplies hot water both to our taps and heaters, obviously we can't turn anything off.

We turn the heat up, when we need it. Why freeze? Keeping warm is necessary. There are other ways of saving money, after all.

kwest Fri 25-Sept-20 11:56:17

Lakeland sell heated electric throws. Best thing I've ever bought and I have one ready every evening when I sit down. Brilliant for easing arthritis and cost very little to run. I've had mine for about 5 years now and have even brought it up to Yorkshire for our stay in a holiday cottage. I bought one for my husband too but he is hardier than me and only uses it when he feels colder than normal.
