To want a tattoo

I'd love a tattoo but at the tender age of 73 I don't know if I'd be able to suit one. My son Sherman thinks it is an awful idea for me to get a tattoo but I can't help feeling like I'm missing out. What are your opinions on tattoos? Should I go for it?

I am 63 have waist length grey hair, nose, ear and belly button piercings and 4 tattoos. It's about what you want - none else. Tattoos can be tastefully done, the only thing I would say is think carefully about the design (maybe ask the tattooist to do it in washable ink first to see how it looks) and really consider where to have it. Mine are all in places I can cover. I did have one removed which was lengthy and extremely painful!

EthelTheTank If you want a tattoo then go for it! I don't quite understand your comment - you feel you are missing out" though??? Personally I can't stand them especially on beautiful young women who have nice sleeveless dresses say white and then they have these ink marks down their backs, arms or whatever (makes me want to get a hanky and rub it off lol).

Each to their own though although never sure why people think it 'enhances' them nor why they feel they are missing out? Like EthelTheTank says? Am even more bemused with people who have them on lower backs who can never see them? What is that all about lol. Seems to make a kind of statement that I obviously do not 'get' So EthelTheTank go for it but seriously? Missing out? don't think so.

Ethel what a great response you’ve had. 9 pages & not a “bun fight” to be seen. Go & get your tattoo done. You don’t need approval from your son or anyone else.

Go for it. I had a small one, 2 elephants, at age 57 to celebrate birth of my grandson and I love it. I need another ?

David Dimbleby did it. A scorpion at 75 I believe, so why not you? (By the way, my maiden name was Sharman, close!)

@green gran ... That’s an extremely divisive and unnecessary observation to put into this thread .. How do you know they didn’t have the tattoos before they had children ??? Plenty of people who once “ had” become those who “ don’t have” through no fault of their own ☹️

Do it!!! It is nothing to do with your son, it is your body and if you fancy some ink then you should have some. My friend treated herself to a small butterfly on her left shoulder for her 70th. I keep thinking about it, but the person I want to do it lives 100 miles away. But one day!!

Had a temporary tattoo of a dolphin while on holiday in Australia once. It lasted about 3 weeks, if you didn’t rub it too vigorously with soap or gel in the shower. I loved it, think would like a permanent one done, as long as it wasn’t too big, and was on my shoulder or somewhere that isn’t too droopy.

If you want one, go for it!

I have seen a few tv programmes about families struggling in poverty where the parents have numerous tattoos. People can spend their money on what they choose, but I can’t help wondering if the cost of the tattoos has contributed to them not being able to support their children. It seems to be addictive, in many cases, ending up with the person looking like a badly-arranged picture gallery.
On the other hand, if you can afford it, and think that tattoos are attractive, then go for it. There is nothing unreasonable about deciding what to do with your own body.

People should do just what they want as long as it is not harmful or upsetting to others, but a tattoo I would approach so cautiously. I have read that the ink goes in to the lymph glands - not a happy prospect - and a friend's daughter with a vast eagle tattoo across her shoulders caused great concern when she was pregnant, because of the effects of the ink inside her body. I guesss that isn't likely to be your problem - and life is short.

I too am 73 and have planned to celebrate end of Covid, along with a friend, by having my first ever tattoo.

Not sure what it will be or where it will be, but definitely will be subtle.

Go for it I Have 2 my first one I was 65, I’m now 70 and planning another one, don’t worry about what other people say it’s your body, if that is what you want go for it live and let live is what I say, Good Luck XXX

Not a fan myself but if you want a tattoo then go ahead, I have seen some really stunning ones - seems to depend on how good the tattoo artist is and how clear the instructions are, I'd make sure what it was exactly I wanted doing before booking an appointment. Maybe try out a tattoo transfer first to see if you really do like it? If you don't you can, at least, wash that one away.

Reconstructed nipples after mastectomy are also tattooed so that they're the right colour.

Please don't get one - I agree that they are very very tacky!!

When I had breast cancer I had two small dots tattooed on my chest and armpit so that the radiographer knew where to aim the radiotherapy. I asked if I could please have a butterfly, but they said they didn’t do them to order! I still have the dots.

I haven't got one and don't want one but if you do go for it...always do what you want and blow anyone elses's opinion. You're hurting no one. Could always be small and discreet ? ....mind you according to my son it hurts like hell and you have to really look after.it with after care of covering it in Savlon and cling film

I don't have any tattoos but if you want one just do it! If it makes you smile then don't worry about what others think or say. It's, your life and your body.
