Sorry......more mask talk

I made a visit to town today to return something that I bought last week. I was asked for directions by a man whose mask was below his chin and he was smoking. Even with my mask on I could smell the damn stuff. In a shop people were not socially distancing and some had their masks under their noses. I did not enjoy my trip out and spent most of my time avoiding people who thought it was ok to walk around chatting and getting in my way. (Ive got my grumpy head on). So I made my way back to the car avoiding as many people as I could. Popped into the garden centre on way back and that was fine. Not many people and all had masks on properly.
Masks should be mandatory, end of. If you can't wear one then stay at home. We all did the lockdown and many people suffered in various ways because of it, and now because of a few selfish people it looks like we could be heading for another. Rant over. Sorry if I have upset anyone

If people cannot wear masks for any reason, they should not be going into places that require them, because they are obviously placing themselves at very great risk.

They should, as so many people with underlying conditions, did during lockdown and that is stay away from any location requiring them to wear one, it is not safe.

I have already posted about this so apologies if you’ve read this already, but you can buy anti fog wipes for glasses on amazon. They are easy to use and work really well for me, a real game changer when wearing masks in shops particularly. I can now see the labels, without steaming up. The make I’m using is LifeArt, I’m not on commission!

I have asthma. I also have high-performing autism to a degree, and a history of anxiety and depression. I could get exemption from wearing a mask, no problem. But I don't, because it's not about my comfort, it's about consideration for others and not putting them at risk.

One rule should be plenty. No mask? No entry.

I get what everyone is saying about masks but I can't be the only one who cannot wear a mask for any length of time. I don't have any underlying health conditions that would exempt me but I cannot stand my face being shut in or the damp, clammy feeling a mask gives. I've tried and after 2 major panic attacks in our local Tesco I now get all my shopping delivered. Anything we run out of my DH has to get as I just can't bear wearing them. I haven't been in a shop since the second panic attack. DH was there and was pretty shocked by it. It's the only time I've ever had a panic attack in my life but I wouldn't buy a lanyard.

Let me put my head above the parapet: Masks are a placebo, they reduce maybe, but do not prevent, cross infection.

That's not to say that I don't wear mine, I do, religiously, but I still take the sort of precaution that we did in the first lockdown and assume that everyone, mask wearers included, are a potential risk.

Given that Dr Campbell has been right about pretty much everything since February I have no reason to believe that his stance on mask wearing isn’t the right one. The only thing he has got wrong ( and he’s actually really pleased about it) is that the death rate isn’t as high as he had feared.

The soapy wash of glasses and air dry method makes them crystal clear afterwards. It is a revelation!
I have also found when looking down at something, glasses will still steam up. So hold my breath for as long as possible then...

Walked round to a local Post Office/convenience store a short while ago, husband had problems paying British Gas paperless gas bill on line, long story. We both had masks on, I waited outside fairly small confined space, whilst I was waiting a succession of young people came in and out, ALL without masks, in spite of notice in the window asking customers to do so.

Hate to be an older moaning person, but can't help notice a split in the age demographic as to those who obey government directives and those who don't. Of course staff don't want to take these people on, pick the wrong one and a violent outcome could occur.

I think it will be better in the Winter when we can wear a scarf and just pull it up when necessary.

I really worry about using a scarf as face covering for two reasons.

1. There is solid scientific evidence about the type of fabric which acts as a barrier (See Dr Campbell again), Most scarves are quite loose weave or knit so, would not do the job

2. Other people’s breath contains the droplets. They land on the outside of the scarf and contaminate it. It then gets handled pulling the scarf up and down contaminating hands and neck. That is why it so important to put a fresh mask on at each wearing. I doubt people will change the scarf several times a day while out and about.

We just need to be a lot tougher with masks. Just today I saw two people in their 20s breeze into Asda, no masks, and nobody said anything. And more than once I’ve seen people (same shop) wearing masks under their noses. Nobody ever says anything, even when they’re at the checkout and it’s obvious.

In France back in July I saw a lot of signs outside shops saying ‘Masks obligatory’.
Here, all too often, it’s a much more wishy-washy ‘Please wear a face covering.’
No wonder people feel able to swan in without.

It’s fascinating how we all see different things, isn’t it. In my experience it’s the older men who either refuse to wear masks, or wear them under their nose, and the older ladies who try to get away with just wearing them on the tip of their nose. When we went for flu shots the other day one of the women had to be told by the doctors office to put her mask on properly.

I also see some small children wearing them wrong, but for the most part I find they can be forgiven.

Well, I went out today and bought the fabric for my winter masks. This is not the weather for pretty floral numbers. I also bought a piece of Christmas fabric and some christmas pudding trim for the Christmas period.

Totally disagree. I can't wear a mask for a number of reasons. My autism makes it a sensory overload. I have asthma but the most delibatating reason is actually my PTSD because when I put a mask over my face I'm suddenly engulfed with he flashback of an abuser suffocating me and cannot move or breath with absolute terror. But I am very indeoendant and indeed if I was not to keep doing my own shopping or going to appointments my condition would deteriorate and be a massive drain on our already NHS when really it's much more manageable just to wear an excemption lanyard. The majority of those now wearing a lanyard maybe didn't want to declare their issues before but now have no choice. The fact is the hidden disability lanyards have been expanded to include a mask excemption lanyard which is the only reason more people wear them. I was offered one prior to lockdown and indeed wore one briefly only to find that staff were approaching me more to check if I was ok which actually made my condition worse because it put me under added pressure to have conversations when I wouldn't normally so I stopped. It didn't take away my disability by not wearing one. But during this pandemic I have had to wear one again just to avoid people approaching me to ask why I don't have a mask.

If only M0nica. I've seen masks so filthy that Covid19 has competition, masks that are not worn correctly and masks with holes in. These pictures are tongue in cheek, but you get the idea.
Masks for electioneering, for cocktail tippling and for smoking. If the plague doesn't get you, the cancer sticks will.

When I go into town the traffic fumes aggravate my bronchiectasis cough but now I find that a mask alleviates it. Quite happy to wear a mask

I have been researching the Spanish Flu pandemic following WW1. The same type of questions were raised in 1918, when there were still plenty of people who didn't believe in the Germ Theory of Disease. "We've Come So Far."
lemsip, M0nica, you both have a point. Mask wearing is not for protecting the wearer, it's to reduce the aerosol of the wearer's exhalation. Something that I should have realised.

How dare the 'defiant non-believers' put other people at risk?

They are free to avoid mask wearing - but should stay well away from shops and crowded places.

After all, it's easy to get anything delivered!

I went to a pub last night that we know do the Covid stuff properly I left my mask in the car but pulled coat collar over mouth and nose but was still refused entry and had to go and get mask....absolutely right !! As I’ve said any times it’s the lack of enforcement of rules that is the problem.

I'm back at work in a boarding school. I had to take one of the students for a Covid test today (they're done at the doctors here).

I've been nagging the students ALL week to wear a mask, including the one getting the test. She HAS got a virus (hopefully not covid). She was terrified at the doctors and is now in isolation, still upset.

I've been religious about mask wearing. Because we're a boarding school, that means I wear one almost all day, every day. Guess who has not been ill at all, despite having a low immune system, and usually getting every bug going?
