AIBU in thinking acronyms are irritating and can be counter productive. It may save the poster from a few moments typing but it can cause the reader to take more than those few moments to figure out what the hell is being said. Just spent time wondering what OH was. Turns out it was other half!

I agree with BlueBelle the abbreviations are annoying. Sometimes there is a long post which is littered with them, makes me lose the will. I have no idea why its necessary to have 'dear' anyone can they not be just husband, brother etc. Lucca I dislike the word 'hubby' as well, not quite on a par with 'the wife' though.

No I’m not asking is husband an old age pensioner

Urmstongran Sat 16-Jan-21 18:45:16

I don’t like them so never use them. I get son in law mixed up with sister in law when it’s abbreviated.

IYSWIM?
?

MawBe Sat 16-Jan-21 18:46:13

Acronyms may annoying but most of us are happy enough with etc, pm,am aren’t we?

But what really makes me squirm is “text speak”
hun, hubs, cuz, gr8, lol, c u and many, many more

SuzannahM Sat 16-Jan-21 18:47:27

I got very confused with one post that referred to the doings of their SIL - I thought it was their son in law but it was their sister in law. Once the penny dropped the post made much more sense.

Blossoming Sat 16-Jan-21 19:08:23

Totes ridic IMHO.

U OK hun? Pm me. Soz grin

I've posted a couple times on other threads about same subject. Last one when I took a guess at what SM was for another GNer. It isn't in the list.

One I fail to remember repeatedly is AIBU.

I prefer to type in full with the only exception of DH.

MawBe Same here. My dislike has to be text speak.angry

Desdemona Sat 16-Jan-21 20:20:32

I am not keen on acronyms at all.

Witzend Sun 17-Jan-21 11:35:19

I’m another who cringes at ‘peeps’. In any case, it’s only one letter shorter than ‘people’ so what’s the point? (I might even say WTF is the point?)

The only thing that aggravated me about ‘dh’ and the like, when I first encountered them around 20 years ago now, was that it took me a little while to work them out - did that mean I was more than normally dense? Was my IQ sadly lacking?
So it was something of a relief when light dawned.

Lucca

I know it’s just me but I’d prefer DH to “hubby” ?

Bit just you Lucca, I hate hubby or hubs.

It seems pointless complaining about acronyms (or abbreviations) because those if us who do use them are unlikely to stop as it is ingrained by now. And, it's not compulsory so don't if you don't want to!

And I too abhor text speak.

Alishka Fri 22-Jan-21 10:20:46

When acronyms go wrong....
After my husband died, I came across a site for widows - thought DH meant Dead Husband.
Made perfect sense to megrin

nadateturbe Fri 22-Jan-21 10:39:13

I don't mind abbreviations /acronyms. Its overuse that annoys me. If a post is littered with them it becones unreadable. I quite often finish texts to my children with ttul.

I absolutely hate hun.
