Slang words which make me cringe ?

My husband thinks I’m being a bit silly over this, but why can’t the BBC, ITV and everywhere else talking about the vaccination, call the injection the vaccination, or double vaccination ? Instead they call it the JAB!!!! It drives me mad every time I hear it. Honestly, “double jabbed” for pity’s sake! Anyone with me on that one?

“Reaching out” instead of phoning

cornishpatsy Mon 28-Jun-21 13:28:16

Spuds instead of potatoes.

Musicgirl Mon 28-Jun-21 13:25:42

@Corryanna, you have just used one of my least favourite phrases - my bad. I really dislike the word meh, too.

GoldenAge Mon 28-Jun-21 13:24:29

I meant BJ not NJ

GoldenAge Mon 28-Jun-21 13:23:54

It would be nice to hear politicians pronounce the word 'to' properly instead of saying 'ter'. Every single Downing street character seems unable to do this, despite the Oxford education. NJ is the worst offender - how anybody with any real education can give any credence to him or others when they say "It's important ter follow the rules" beats me!

ExD, you are right - I feel that any adult should be able to distinguish a noun from a verb. However, social stationery now seems only to offer " invites..

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 28-Jun-21 13:15:25

All the above. Gutted. Gobsmacked. Innit. Grandkids. I could go on ... And not slang but can I add ‘lickle’ instead of ‘little’ and ‘we are’ pregnant. Make me want to scream. I should change my name to Meldrew.

Only the tweet ones set my teeth on edge.
Fur babies, over the rainbow bridge, and that sort of stuff.
Gifted is another.

Lilyflower Mon 28-Jun-21 13:12:25

Sorry, the full stop followed by a comma was a 'glasses not on/fat fingers fail. Also gruesome.

Lilyflower Mon 28-Jun-21 13:11:37

Calling people you don't know, 'Hun.,' online. Simply gruesome.

Yammy Mon 28-Jun-21 12:48:29

I thoroughly agree not "jab", it is a medical procedure we would not talk of going to the Dentist for a" pull "we would say extraction. We should all be saying immunisation.

Maidmarion Mon 28-Jun-21 12:48:14

Really don’t like that ‘my bad’ nonsense…!!!!!!

Juicylucy Mon 28-Jun-21 11:42:47

I don’t think text speak has helped.

Ksb65 Mon 28-Jun-21 11:42:06

I’m with you on this Corryanna. I can’t stand it either!

Alioop Mon 28-Jun-21 11:41:05

Lecky for electric.
Hun, my friend calls me it all the time, hate it.

GrammaH Mon 28-Jun-21 11:24:45

Famalam?? What's that paperbackbutterfly? Agree about holibobs. I loathe hubster even more than hubby if that's possible. Also, hipster makes me cringe. I'm sure there are loads more....

NotSpaghetti Mon 28-Jun-21 11:23:47

Going back to the OP, it was also raised here:

Blossoming Mon 28-Jun-21 11:23:23

Hubby, Hun, holibobs all vile assaults upon mine ears.

TillyWhiz Mon 28-Jun-21 11:21:03

Talking about jabs which I don't mind at all, what's this "My bad" all about then? ?

paperbackbutterfly Mon 28-Jun-21 11:16:44

Holibobs and famalam both grate on me. I have a younger friend who uses botg

jangeo44 Mon 28-Jun-21 11:16:22

Hate fur baby too, also 'tatos, ' nana - what is wrong with potato and banana, don't mind jab at all - just pleased I have had both

sandelf Mon 28-Jun-21 11:15:09

Agree - and falling for a baby - makes me laugh.

Paperbackwriter Mon 28-Jun-21 11:14:33

hollysteers

Don’t mind jab, but a close friend always talks about ‘having her din dins”
That makes me cringe, we are not six years of age!

Oh no - now you've also made me think of that dreadful term, "holibobs" Noooooo!

Sheilasue Mon 28-Jun-21 11:01:58

What makes me annoyed is naming the covid 19 China or Indian variant. It’s just covid 19 that’s all. An injection.

Aldom Mon 28-Jun-21 10:58:38

Hun and babe.
