Christmas Trees

Like *MaizieD we buy ours from a local estate which grows its own trees.

We used to buy our tree about a week - 10 days before Christmas, but in recent years so many people were buying trees early that the choice of trees was getting very limited by then. We now buy the tree in early December and then leave it outside in the cold until about a week before Christmas, when we bring it indoors aand decorate it.

When the DC were young we decorated 2 weekends before Xmas day. Now I try to do it the weekend before 15th Dec. Always leave them up until 6th Jan
3 weeks is long enough & keeps it special for me ? ?

That is madness as the trees will be dead by NOVEMBER 5th never mind christmas. I am not a fan of christmas.

I love Christmas, but don't like the way it's been stretched out and now seems to start on 1st November. Seems to make it less magical.

Jeepers Murphy, if you put up a real tree now it will be a FIRE HAZARD by Christmas! (I'm well versed in real trees. Growing up we always had a real one. Smelled AMAZING.)

When I was a child the Christmas tree (fresh) went up on Christmas Eve,
When I married it went up after school broke up, (I was a primary school teacher) and later, not until after my child's birthday on December 19th.
Now it is installed by my adult children on about 15th December. Still fresh, wouldn't have an artificial one in the house.
I hate it when people remove decorations et al on Boxing Day or shortly after.

And the early trees and decorations give the moaners something to moan about, so presumably they’re happy, too - it’d be a shame to deprive them. ?

I buy a real tree from a local big estate. They are cut fairly regularly so I can buy a fresh one well into December. It goes up on Christmas Eve and comes down on 6th January. I do love a Christmas tree and feel very sad when I have to take it down...

But, seeing Christmas decorations up for weeks before Christmas and disappearing a couple of days after Christmas gives me no happiness whatsoever.

I have been deciding what colour this year . Last year was silver and white but this year I am going for red. No tinsel though, just over it and I reckon it looks tacky. I have ordered a load of little red wooden decorations online. My daughter is going silver this year, good with the little white lights.

We have several artificial trees (kitchen, dining room, GC’s bedroom) all go up on 1st December.

We have a very large real tree in the sitting room which goes up on 14th December.

You’ve just reminded me that I need to buy a new tree! I donated my old artificial one to a local charity last year ( they wanted a table top one for a display) as I hadn’t bothered with a tree for a few years. I no longer have people staying with me over Christmas as my sister hosts the family now so just put out a few of my favourite room decorations. But this year my sister is staying with me for two weeks while visiting from the US so I will make more of an effort.

I expect I will be shocked at the price!

Just to add, we will be putting up our (real) tree on 6th December, somewhat earlier than usual, because a sister and BiL who we haven’t seen since before COVID hit, are coming to stay from the 7th to the 9th.
We always keep it in a bucket of wet gravel so it lasts well until 6th January - in this house nothing comes down until then.

I was surprised to see so many Christmas decorations already in John Lewis yesterday - even before Halloween is out of the way.

I had a look at their Christmas Emporium, and must say (far too early or not) the displays were fantastic. Elder Gdcs, 5 and 6, will be with us all next Monday (Inset day) so I’ll certainly be taking them to see that.

I might tack on an extra bus ride (they adore the bus, especially on top) to a garden centre that usually has loads of Christmassy things (I’ll let them choose one small bauble each) and a child-friendly cafe.
So that’s next Monday sorted. ?

A house near me had a grand ‘turning on’ of their Christmas lights on Monday!
B and Q was full of Christmas trees yesterday…..

Christmas seems to get earlier every year! christmas cards in the shops in August, christmas films on tv have been runing for a month. christmas adverts on tv. Qvc were selling christmas stuff in July! Its all so commercialised, the real meaning of christmas doesnt exist anymore!

I think some people are trying to do this with Halloween now. It literally used to be just one day of the year, now the decorations are up two weeks beforehand, the fireworks are going off for days before, and there is talk of some parents sending their children out trick or treating on Saturday night because Monday is a school day (here in Ireland).

Any time after the 15th of December.
Artificial for the last two years after acquiring a kitten who loved climbing the real one we had .
She is older this year so we hope she has grown out of it!!

Weekend before Christmas my real tree is delivered and decorated.

Since we met we’ve always had a real tree, sometimes 2 for the past 33 years. But we’ve taken the decision to buy an artificial one this year. Those trees already cut won’t last til Christmas- they need to be in water, just like flowers.

I have a lovely friend who puts up seven (artificial) trees in November! She is very talented at decorating her house and it looks great, but one small real tree, put up quite late is enough for me!

1st December for us but ours are realistic fakes after years of real ones and my DH moaning about the needles on the carpets.
