My husband and I stayed in an old rambling hotel on Paignton seafront a couple of years ago (it’s recently been pulled down). My son and his family had the room next door. When we went down to breakfast my son said Did you hear those children running about the corridors during the night? (We’d heard nothing). My son said every time he opened the door to investigate the noise stopped.
Jokingly I said to the waitress Have you got ghosts here? She went a bit pale and said I’ll get the chef who came out and said So You’ve seen them too?.
He said the hotel was previously used as a children’s home and he’d seen ‘children’ many times.
Weird………… we never saw anything and my son only ‘heard’ the children… My son and family were leaving that day but we we stayed a further night and heard nothing.

Also, not a ghost but an angel.

A couple of friends were travelling to Romania to help build a school and a church. ( She is an ex teacher, he was a builder.)

They were on a hungarian 'motorway' and their car broke down, about 35 years ago.

They were very concerned because of the possibility of being arrested for breaking down, it did happen there in those days.

They heard a tap on the window and a man, speaking perfect English, asked how he could help.
He sorted the problem in the engine, then said that they had better be on their way quickly as the police were coming.
They looked back in their mirror and saw him just disappear into nothingness. Then looking much further back they could see a police car arriving so they quickly continued their journey onto Romania.

I believe that folks believe in a "devil" entity as much as a "god" entity. Both unseen both on faith and both always a possibility. Also both a matter of conscience and personal beliefs , I'd prefer a non preaching discussion about this if you don't mind?

I’m not preaching. I said it once and that’s it. I also gave an experience my Christian friend had had. I think that falls into the remit of the thread....don’t you?

My mum used to hear children running around in Portchester castle ( where all the children would play during the war years )

They were the voices of the children killed in a house from bombing, just down the road from her. Her house was the only one to survive in that street that night during a raid on Portsmouth

Her brother and sister ( 1 and 2 years younger than her) would hear these voices too.

She is 92 now but that memory has stayed forever.

I adore these spooky threads. Has anyone mentioned Uncanny on Radio 4 with Danny Robbins? It's completely fascinating. The series is on its 14th episode this week.

Never heard of it, sound fascinating! Love this type of thing too. Thanks for the heads up!

I consider myself down to earth and think a lot of these can be examined but I my husband and I once ran a centre for children to come, with staff, for field study and other holidays. It was a 45 roomed Victoria mansion. One day, between Christmas and New year when we knew the house was empty, locked up and no staff in, we heard footsteps in the corridor outside our flat. We flug the door open, nobody. We went along the corridor and looked in every room, nobody. Checked with the groundsman and chef who both lived in cottages in the ground and they both said they'd not been in. The place had been a family home then used as a military hospital in the war so who knows. I was also driving with a friend through my village and said 'oh there's Hope' reversed back to find she wasn't there, though we'd both seen her, and simultaneously remembered she'd died a few weeks before. I wonder if that was some sort of replayed memory though it was strange we both saw her.

As a Christian, I know the Bible warns us against these things. There is very definitely a spirit world, but it doesn’t consist of returning dead people. They may look recognisable to you, but they are just Satan’s tricks.

A Christian friend of ours was in his house one night, when ‘someone’ was banging on his outer door so hard, it was caving in. On opening...there was no one there. Things started flying round the room. He prayed in the name of Jesus....and it all went quiet. He did move after that!

You’re much ‘safer’ dismissing it at rubbish, or doing nothing about it. If you believe what you see, and are open to spiritual things, so that you start to look into it more, this is when it gets dangerous.

Jesus is the only way to go.

Whatever tugs yer rope. I'd never try to push anyone in any direction with my preferences and beliefs. Ex Catholic and much bullied and beaten youngster as was speaking here! There ARE things we're NOT alone as such and we DO need to be objective and open minded.

I don't think it is 'rubbish'. I believe if it is comforting it is from Love. I recently had a traumatic family crisis and prayed so hard. I just felt this shower of Love fall down all over me, and I knew with all certainty that all would be well.

That’s lovely to hear. You prayed...so of course you will have felt comforted.

It’s when God isn’t involved, that problems can start.

Hand on heart, seen? No I don't believe I have.
Hand on heart, heard? Definitely! Lived for 4years in house maybe c1790s old back to back conversion into one big terrace, built for foremen of carding/spinning she'd opposite. Used to hear so done entering 'front' house, coming upstairs then stop. Heard children laughing and whispering in 'back' house downstairs where 2nd family lived.
DH was on 5-3 shift with cops and actually heard him come in front door, go into back room and speak quietly to our Yorkie move about a bit then come upstairs, I noticed bedroom door open when I always shut it and waited to see him on landing then - nothing!! Odd? Finally went to sleep , he arrived at 6.30ish , there had been incident to make him late!! Also our Yorkie used to 'talk' and bark at something/someone under spare room door and #2DS bedroom door too! Ways friendly never scary it definitely there, turns out previous owner also had same xperiences, she told me months on. They HAD left cryptic new home card saying"hope you have as happy a time in this home as we all have had" they were mid40s no kids....!! Strange but I swear true!

I would love to know that there is something beyond death. Both my parents died a year and three weeks apart. My Dad appeared at my bedside dressed in his grey suit and told me that he was happy and not to worry. He was not buried in that suit. My Mum's neighbour consulted a medium who described my Dad wearing that same suit. He asked the neighbour to tell my Mum that he was very happy and not to worry.
It all felt very real but I was distraught at his death so who knows?
When my Mum died she appeared in my dream. I was sitting on the upper deck of a bus. I expressed astonishment that she was there and said "But you are dead".
She said she was, I asked if she had seen God yet. She said "No , I've been here six weeks and seen neither sight or sound of him".
At major times in my life I have been aware of the presence of them both watching over me but I could not see them.

When my cousin was dying from a brain tumour she said if their was anything on the other side she would come back and give us a sign. That was about ten years ago and nothing.
So disappointing.

Yes. Just the one. I was in bed but woken by the dog and cat standing up on the end of my bed where they normally slept peacefully until long after I got up. It was quite light so perhaps about 6 in the morning or slightly earlier. Suddenly my bedroom door opened and a young woman rushed in and hurried towards the window where I never closed the curtains as my bedroom was on the third floor overlooking a car park and open grassland. She was a solid looking girl. About a dress size 20/22. Not fat, just attractively solid. She had short hair and was wearing a black pencil skirt and a black cotton sleeveless t.shirt. I was sitting up in bed stroking the cat and dog who had both hurried close to me and I was just starting to say “what the fu......,,,” when she turned towards me with a look of despair on her face that I never want to see on another person again. She then, well there’s no other words, she turned to look out the window again and suddenly wasn’t there any longer. And I realised she couldn’t have rushed from my bedroom door to the window as I had 2 chest of drawers along the wall and had left 2 drawers open so there wasn’t room for anyone to pass by the end of my bed to get to the window.
Not being a worrier, I’d stopped thinking about the incident but a few months later heard from a neighbour that a former tenant had gone to work in America, leaving his girlfriend behind. That she was a big girl and had idolised her boyfriend. Who had promised to be back in 3 weeks and asked her to sell off the furniture and keep the money safe so it could go towards her plane ticket when he came back to collect her. She had told neighbours that he was leaving his very noticeable sports car parked at the airport so he’d be back 2 minutes after she saw it parked on the car park. He had actually given the landlord a months notice the week before he left. So she only realised that he’d left her and had no intention of returning when the landlord informed her that she was staying in the flat illegally and would be evicted as a squatter. It was only when a neighbour told her that he’d seen her boyfriends car for sale in a local car lot, that she started to believe she truly had been abandoned.
She went to live in a hostel where she committed suicide about 17years before I’d seen her looking out my bedroom window to see if her boyfriends car was in the car park. I never told anyone about seeing her until now.

Wilm

My Dad died when my youngest son was 3, a few days after his death my son was waving out the window into our back garden, I asked him who he was waving too & he said ‘Grandad, he’s on the swing’…..so I waved too!

Love this so much!

I got on really well with my MIL even though we lived 200miles apart. 45 years ago, one morning, doing the housework, I had a strange feeling that “all was not quite right” with her.
Suddenly my H arrived home from the office…unexpectedly. When I saw him I said “ I know why you’re here…it’s to do with your mum .” “ Yes…” he said. “just had a message at work on the phone. My mums died!”

My favourite aunt was also my godmother and we were quite close even though she lived 300 miles away. She was always elegant and would never be seen without make up, or wearing her favourite perfume. I don’t know what it was called, but many a time, after she died, I could smell her perfume lingering in our house…even though she had never visited us.

My cousin - a piano teacher-lived in a very old house in the country….a chantry which was were where monks used to sing hymns/make music hundreds of years ago. Imagine her amusement to be woken some nights/early mornings by the sound of her piano being played….when she was the only occupant in the house!

Oh cookiemonster66, I'm so sorry flowers I don't think it was a coincidence either

kevincharley Tue 18-Jan-22 12:15:17

Could the sceptics explain why a 3 year old child woke her parents in the early hours, chatting to granny who had 'come to see her' and was 'sitting on the bed'. Then the following morning they had a phone call to say that granny had died?
Or why my father, staying in a hotel felt a pressure on his chest each time he switched off the light and tried to sleep? It happened 3 times until he'd had enough, got dressed and walked around the town until breakfast time.

cookiemonster66 Tue 18-Jan-22 12:07:42

my young daughter died recently, we still have no explanation, death certificate says sudden adult death, my other daughter and myself had to go get tested for underlying heart conditions to see if it was genetic, while sat in the waiting room the song from her funeral came over the speakers and we both started crying and hugging, like she was letting us know she was there with us. It is not a common song that is played often, not a popular one, so quite unique, we explained to poor doctor why we were upset at the coincidence of song being played while we waited.

Cymres1 Tue 18-Jan-22 12:02:06

I am not at all sceptical about things well beyond our assumed knowledge, there's still so much we don't understand. The old London hospital where I trained, my brother and also my Mum did too, was full of tales. A white lady walked on one ward, a nurse would tap your shoulder if you felt sleepy feeding a baby on the children's ward, many saw evidence of a poltergeist on gynae, and another ward had prayers before the day's work and had apparently had an exorcism done because of an unruly presence. This was taken for granted, nobody questioned it. The hospital dated back to the mid 18th century, so had seen many sadnesses. It was also where the Elephant Man was given sanctuary from his terrible life in the freak show. An amazing place.
I am fascinated and moved by people's recollections.

Sharina Tue 18-Jan-22 12:02:05

Odd things have happened to me. My friend and I shared a room at Jamaica Inn. All night long I was aware of a hand on my shoulder. I could see her in her bed. It disappeared at around six in the morning. When I was younger, I’d wake up to the smell of Deep Heat. There was no one in the room. I only found out years later that I had a stalker/peeping Tom outside my window. Really, I had more to be afraid of the living than the dead

Esmay Tue 18-Jan-22 12:00:16

Definitely, and usually it's not something to be frightened by .

It's just an unquiet spirit .

Some people see or sense them and some don't .

As a child ,I felt the presence of a girl ,who had died in our house .

I only felt intimidated by her as a teenager when boys were interested in me and then - she went .

In my first house abroad I found it hard to sleep after 3.00 am and that when that's when I saw menacing figures floating across the room and loud noises and strange music .
That was unpleasant .

But since then , I've seen my Grandma many times when I'm working in the garden and that has been reassuring . I sensed ghosts in other people's houses and have felt no fear .

blubber Tue 18-Jan-22 12:00:03

Yes. Several times. A man was with me all afternoon at a craft fair. Another time just after we moved into a Victorian house somebody told me to bugger off. I said "You bugger off, I live here now" I also saw a dog in the office I worked in. .In hospital after a major operation the nurses told me the "Grey lady" sat by my bedside all night and they knew I would be ok as she always sat with very ill people but they always survived.

AreWeThereYet Tue 18-Jan-22 11:58:40

I thought I had one once. I was in bed one night in the dark and could feel the bed shaking. Scared the pants off me. Turned out it was a mild earthquake tremor rocking me about, but I didn't find that out until the morning ?
