Apparently it is the fashion to dress like a goddess at the moment.
Do any of you feel that you would want to dress like that.
The 50s films from America always had luxury clothes but now days we seem to want to dress down. Jeans, trousers trainers
which I wear a lot.

I have just come in from the garden wearing my standard Garden Goddess outfit. Ancient canvas jacket with frayed cuffs, ancient LE trousers, purple clogs. And looking like I’ve been pulled through a hedge backwards with hair escaping from ancient clip. Tres chic.

Lounging and shivering in a floaty beach dress, covering a multitude of sins apart from bingo wings and bone white legs. Yes it's a Brit abroad. Waiting for the sun to come over to our corner. There must be some overweight goddesses somewhere in history.

PS nowadays the garments just get stuffed in my bag with the carrots and broccoli, but saving the planet with no unnecessary packaging is good!

Josieann Sat 26-Feb-22 07:44:38

That sounds lovely Sago.
You're right, it's all about the packaging and I used to love the days of watching the sales assistant carefully wrap the garments in tissue paper, then placing them in a box with a ribbon. (A bit like Rowan Atkinson with the necklace in Love Actually!)

I have a dressing gown that is so very beautiful, it’s a georgette fabric in rich colours, with puffed sleeves and deep cuffs in a wrap style.
It took me months to find it, when it arrived from Paris exquisitely packaged, I was beyond excited.
It was made by someone called Lavinia who had a small online business, she now works for a fashion house.
It was more than I had hoped for.
I always feel like a Goddess in it.
My daughter has had her eye on it for years but she’s out of luck as it will be my “ leaving party” outfit.
Best £75 I ever spent.

Germanshepherdsmum don't bin your Woolover catalogue, it will keep on coming relentlessly because they will think you have looked at it.

Instead, strike your address twice (do not obliterate, they need to know who is sending it back) and write on it "unsolicited mail", RTS and put it back in the post box.

Your postman will get it back and return it to sender. You will have to do this 2 or 3 times before they will take you off their mailing list, but it's worth it in the end.

I worked for Royal Mail for 20 years so this is not a fanciful, unfounded suggestion

Good luck

Thank you! I will do this.

My dears! I'm still wearing the Trussardi jeans I bought 2 years ago. To be honest, I had a new zip put in at one point and there was a period when I got too fat to wear them.

Am finding myself increasingly drawn to the colour pink. I know it's considered a colour for little girls only but I feel it is much kinder on my skin to the usual greys, naies and blacks that my age group is expected to wear.

Anyone agree?

It takes real confidence to pull off that look Esmay grin

That's a nice dress , I said to a lady in a shop ...do you know that Diane Von Fustenberg began the fashion for wrap dresses ?
No ,she said ,I didn't.
What she longed to say was I 'm really not interested in any fashion comments from a lady ,who looks as though she bought her out of style coat from a charity shop .
My tweed coat dates back to the 80's and the hem still has a safety pin to stop the hem dropping .
It's so warm and I love it .

And worse ,I'm wearing one of my son in law's socks and on the other foot is an old school sock which was my son's.
He left school about 17 years ago .
Combine the look with a granny trolley ,which has been mended with duck tape and you can imagine the look on the lady's face .

Actually I’m do possess a piece of designer clothing. It’s a very ancient Jasper Conran black leather jacket. The leather is butter soft and beautiful and the red silk lining is still in good condition.

Josieann Fri 25-Feb-22 17:05:26

I think a proper designer is someone who works for a fashion house and certainly someone who understands fabrics and styles.
I was nanny to a French girl in Paris who grew up to become a designer and worked for The House of Carven. The creator was a fascinating lady who started designing clothes as a little girl for her cat! She designed for Edith Piaf and created the uniform for Eurostar and The French Olympics team. I remember that Emanuelle's wedding dress was made in house and it was stunning, as was her mum's outfit. I wore Laura Ashley and received several compliments!

Woolovers have taken over Purecollection, and their prices have gone up considerably. The designs have gone down.

Blossoming Fri 25-Feb-22 16:46:49

Wandering off topic as usual, why do we call them designer clothes? Surely all clothes are designed by somebody, even if it’s a drawing on the back of a fag packet in some back street sweatshop.

Dress like a goddess? …….. I AM a goddess grin wink

Josieann Fri 25-Feb-22 15:54:05

Jaxie it is soo much easier for men to look smart, because they need only buy a handful of good quality expensive British made shirts. My DH used to head for Jermyn Street and pick up a few at a time. Several of the shops there had the UK made promise, (Emma Willis was really good.) It's different for ladies' fashion because most don't want to wear something more than a few times anyway.
Woolovers get poor marks from me too. Disappointing.

Jaxie Fri 25-Feb-22 15:35:59

I too very disappointed with Woolovers’ products. Poor quality that looks shabby after a few wearings. I don’t want to support China and its oppressive regime either, but if we only have British designers who prefer to have stuff made up by wage slaves in the East so they can make huge profits where then can we source fair trade clothing that doesn’t make one look like an unreconstructed hippy?

Yammy Fri 25-Feb-22 15:16:02

My DD when she first left uni worked on the management of a very prestigious London store. They had to wear suits, leather shoes and if a certain grade were given a handbag allowance.
She couldn't afford tops so I bought her some. She was asked what make her top and replied Giorgio, they assumed Armani. She shouted after them Asda. It was at the time when Asda called their clothes George.wink

Reporting in today. Jeans here too.
Back in the noughties I had a pair of those Posh VB jeans with diamante on the derrière in the design of a crown. Not quite a goddess, more a Queen. Today it was Boden jeans, so following a theme, you could say I am now Boadicea.

I often think of buying something new to wear but then my wardrobe is absolutely jam-packed so I'd have nowhere to put it. Also I hardly go anywhere so?

I'm similar, always getting some item or other! Chucked tons to charity in lockdown but strangely feel justified in replacing stuff with updated version! So much for minimising my wardrobe?

Mummer Fri 25-Feb-22 14:47:29

Casdon

I’d like to say I was as goddess like as Mariella Frostrup. She looks so cool in wide leg mid calf brown cords. I look ridiculous.

Mariell:a is I guess a size4-6 not 46as moi! Anyone who has a washboard chest and figure of a 9 year old looks good in 'anything'!!

Unigran4 Fri 25-Feb-22 14:22:15

I see your point germanshepherdsmum but they get bulk rates from Royal Mail so it costs them little to send your catalogue, and my comment came from my personal stance towards chopping down trees to send out these catalogues. But if you find it easier to do what you do - then keep doing it! It was only a suggestion, not an instruction!
