I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

Like sandwiched between each word - I can't follow the conversation .
Iconic - used far too frequently .
Gobsmacked
Woke
Binary
Trans
Pushing the envelope
Back story
Gonna
Somefink
Veggie
Cheers when not in a public house.

The list is endless
...

Luckygirl3 Tue 25-Oct-22 17:18:00

Absolutely.

If you are feeling bored one day, put the radio on and count the number of times this word is said!

Billybob4491 Tue 25-Oct-22 17:14:51

Brekkie
Snuck (whatever that means)
Foodie
Hun
Little man
and every sentence that begins with the word basically, basically this and basically that.

That is all for now folks, I am basically signing off.

More bad grammar than annoying words but :

Less and fewer
Could of
Confusing borrow and lend - drives me up the wall
Sat and sitting
Off of - I can't listen to Andy Williams - 'Can't take my eyes off of you'. This has annoyed me for decades

I do find it amusing when people mishear sayings e.g. from the geeko, wake up and smell the copy, reaper cushions etc - all can be found on social media!

Caleo Mon 24-Oct-22 23:58:08

"Like" was a nice expression to begin with but now it's one of more annoying cliches.

I remember when I was young and I thought it was clever to speak the same cliches as my chums. I wonder why teachers of English usage don't despair.

Witzend

‘Birthing’ instead of ‘giving birth to’ - I hate it!

Not forgetting.... We are pregnant ?

Alverstone25 Mon 24-Oct-22 22:22:11

I had a laugh reading the above, most of which i agree are indeed cringeworthy.
seems the other in- words / phrases from a few years back ie..
At the end of the day, Basically, You know what i mean are out of fashion atm.
OMG
FREEKING
HEY ... are words i hear daily, especially from the staff under 40

NanKate Mon 24-Oct-22 21:39:39

‘How are you’ ? ‘I’m good’ ☹️

Granc Mon 24-Oct-22 20:51:12

Can I get.
Calling everyone guys
Someone not known to me addressing me by my first name sends me into the stratosphere
My bad
I could go on and on but really really bad is traffic news reporters that the English language appears to be in a sort of code especially the th sound. I have to shut my ears to it which of course defeats the object. Although it isn’t easily understood anyway
Why is speaking the Kings English so difficult for young people

Witzend Mon 24-Oct-22 18:43:22

Outside ‘of’ - when the ‘of’ is completely redundant. E.g. as heard on R4 earlier, ‘outside of London’.

Shtrong and shtruggle - and other words beginning with ‘str’ - why can’t so many people pronounce a simple S any more?,

Mollygo Thu 15-Sept-22 23:43:42

Yes Floradora9 and I hate it when they announce, for example, that 79% of the population believe or think or say something, based on a a question that hasn’t been put to anything like the whole population.

Floradora9 Thu 15-Sept-22 21:39:23

I hate when a tragedy happens somewhere and the reporter says that the whole town is coming to terms with what had happened. How does he know, has he asked everyone ?

Witzend Thu 15-Sept-22 13:07:59

One that’s going to be around a lot soon is ‘gifting’. ?
I was surprised to see it on several signs in John Lewis last year - I would have expected JL to know better. Which was daft of me, I know.

Nvella Thu 15-Sept-22 12:07:08

“Reach out” - instead of phone
“Passed” or “pass” instead of died
“Hun” - just hate it!

Plumblady Wed 07-Sept-22 23:25:38

"To be perfectly honest "...
Why, were you not being perfectly honest before?

"I should of"...
Its "I should HAVE"!!!!

"I was like, you know"...
Whaaaatttt?

Dempie55 Tue 06-Sept-22 18:28:10

"It comes as....." at the front of every news report and new article!

imaround Tue 06-Sept-22 18:22:17

While this article is from the American Linguistics Society, it's points still apply in all countries.

www.linguisticsociety.org/content/english-changing#:~:text=First%2C%20it%20changes%20because%20the,to%20them%20clearly%20and%20efficiently.

Languages change. They have since the dawn of man. By complaining about something that has always happened and will always happen really shows that a person is stuck in an old fashioned thought process.

But of course, I do not think anyone complaining here really cares how intolerant and old fashioned they sound.

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 15:23:29

From the get-go

Why use two syllables when you can use one - start.

IamMaz Tue 06-Sept-22 15:17:31

I hate ‘gunna’ for ‘going to’.
Strange that it’s never said when a journey is involved - I’m gunna London tomorrow, for example!

imaround Mon 05-Sept-22 15:38:08

Like clockwork. Once a month at least. And if the old thread is not near the top, someone goes and digs it up.

I am starting to rather like this thread though. It shows me who people really are.

‘Birthing’ instead of ‘giving birth to’ - I hate it!

What Witzend said. Where did it come from? Can we put it back??

Witzend Mon 05-Sept-22 10:50:28

‘Birthing’ instead of ‘giving birth to’ - I hate it!

Joy241 Sun 28-Aug-22 15:41:48

Libman Sorry. I am unfamiliar with ‘gammons’. Please explain.

Maybe I ‘don’t get out enough’?

Goldbeater1 Sun 28-Aug-22 14:05:25

Mollygo

Goldbeater1 I don’t get the use of passed either, but if it makes the speaker more comfortable than saying died then I’ll live with it.

Oh I wouldn’t dream of commenting in real life - but as a couple of people have said, letting off steam here harms nobody. ?
