I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

NannyB2604 Sat 13-Aug-22 22:38:05

Holibobs; Wine o'clock; Nom nom nom; Can I get? I should of; Hun ...

Chestnut Sat 13-Aug-22 09:59:22

I've just seen a new one.
'Baby daddy' for the father of your child.

TwinLolly Sat 13-Aug-22 08:00:10

Debark instead of disembark

Kryptonite Sat 13-Aug-22 03:34:55

Bored of, fed up of instead of with.
Different to instead of different from.
Incorrect use of less and fewer.

Kryptonite Sat 13-Aug-22 03:29:48

Latest pet hate: 'populate''.
Populate (fill in) the spreadsheet, form etc
Populate (cover) the wall with pictures.

"My bad"
saying "no" as in "That was a good meal, no?"
In real life

MissAdventure Fri 12-Aug-22 22:39:00

I'm not even gonna lie.
That's a strange one.
I think my boys deliberately use every new saying they can until I get really cross because I have no idea what they're talking about. (And they both mumble) grin

HowVeryDareYou Fri 12-Aug-22 19:03:59

at the end of the day
can't get my head around it
build back better
stay safe

annodomini Fri 12-Aug-22 18:21:17

'Fave'. What's so difficult about saying or writing 'favourite'?
I've even seen it on these forums.

BlueSapphire Fri 12-Aug-22 17:24:29

People starting every sentence with 'So.......'

kircubbin2000 Fri 12-Aug-22 12:09:44

No belladonna, not judgemental at all. It's true here most Catholics say Haitch, no idea why.

HowVeryDareYou Fri 12-Aug-22 11:17:19

I hate all these Americanisms. A couple that I hear a lot -

Can I get (no, you damned well can't)
I'll just grab a coffee (don't you dare grab it)
There are a bunch of people (bananas come in bunches, not people)

Scribbles Fri 12-Aug-22 10:50:00

I loathe being told to "stay safe".
You know what? Life's a bit risky. Get over it!

nanna8 Fri 12-Aug-22 10:42:40

Same over here, they say haitch is used by and taught by Catholics. Doesn’t bother me, I think it is rather cute and quirky. We have paddicks instead of paddocks and Austraya for Australia. One particular politician was known for that.

Doodledog Fri 12-Aug-22 10:30:54

My children (adults) both inexplicably say 'haitch'. I assume a teacher is responsible, as neither my husband nor I do.

AFAIK neither of them has converted to Catholicism though ?

Bellanonna Fri 12-Aug-22 10:16:02

Haitch is terrible. In N Ireland it marks you out as a Catholic.

A bit judgemental there, Kircubbin ?

I’ve explained that I use it on the ‘phone mainly for my own benefit but don’t aspirate the word otherwise.

Grandma2213 Fri 12-Aug-22 03:26:00

GrannyBeek - I agree. 'Amount of' instead of 'number of' is the only one I correct aloud when listening to the radio or hear TV interviews. I expect better from Radio 4, though I suppose they can't control what their interviewees say.

HowVeryDareYou Thu 11-Aug-22 23:03:41

I absolutely hate it when someone says "No problem"

TwinLolly Thu 11-Aug-22 21:42:20

He/she/my friend 'wrote me'. Eh? Wrote what? Wrote to me. Wrote me a letter.

grannyactivist Thu 11-Aug-22 19:55:33

I am happy that language evolves, but there are one or two words that I bite my lip not to correct. Upmost, rather than utmost for example.

My granddaughter is three and a half and today heard someone say ‘loads of…..’, which prompted her to respond with, “that’s not right granny, she should say ‘lots of’, not loads”. ?

kircubbin2000 Thu 11-Aug-22 19:32:13

Contra Bute instead of contrib ute.

kircubbin2000 Thu 11-Aug-22 19:29:01

Stan when used by young people to mean like.
Exasperate when meaning to make something worse.

Eileen Thu 11-Aug-22 19:12:03

‚Back to back‘….. that makes me think of the starting position for a duel

Bellanonna Thu 11-Aug-22 16:46:41

I’d never call aitch anything but aitch except on the ‘phone when, to avoid any misunderstanding that it could be an “a”, I always say haitch. Don’t see it as a problem.

Tibbs Thu 11-Aug-22 16:17:12
