What current day words drive you up the wall?

I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

Happysexagenarian Wed 10-Aug-22 17:07:57

Backstory, instead of history/family history (pet hate)
Reach out, instead of contact
Passed, instead of died
'So' at the beginning of sentences
Hun
My Bad
Aks
Sick
F**k
Sh*t
Woke
Disrespecting
Fed up of, when it should be fed up with
Little Prince or Princess when referring to a small child or baby
Bubs and Bubba (as above)
I'm good, instead of I'm fine or well

And dare I say it 'Mental Health'. I realise it's an important matter for many people but the phrase seems to be very overused now. Every news topic and interview is peppered with references to mental health. I cringe when I hear it and just mentally switch off and don't watch or listen any more.

Starting every sentence with So

My bad……..what the hell does that mean

What can I get you guys, in a restaurant

My partner

"absolutely" for a simple "yes".
"I need you to..." for "Please will you..."
"ter" for "to"
"sicth" for "sixth"
"shop" for "shop FOR"

granma47 Wed 10-Aug-22 16:09:27

First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sic!

The verb "to podium" ...used in sport paticularly Formula 1 .Aaaargh!

Lauren59 Wed 10-Aug-22 15:51:26

Another one that drives me batty is when a waiter asks, “how’s everything tasting?”

Wow you guys I will shut my gob in case like I am coming over all woke and aks what is allowed.?

Thanks for the laugh! ?

Lauren59 Wed 10-Aug-22 15:39:34

“I’m not a fan of” — instead of “I don’t like”.

Annanan Wed 10-Aug-22 15:30:28

Hubby, hubster, hollibobs, famalam, passed away, passed. 24/7.

Can I instead of may I
Less when it should be fewer
Bruv and guys when we are not
Like and f--- continually when people seem to have limited vocabulary
Lots more
Do they actually teach grammar in schools these days?

Wheniwasyourage Wed 10-Aug-22 15:03:09

Oh yes, most of the above. You guys is just awesome to of come up wif so many!!

Recently I've seen many examples of "fit" and "knit" used as past tenses instead of the perfectly good "fitted" and "knitted". I know it's whatAmericans say, and they are welcome to do so (she said graciously), but why do we have to? A "knit jumper" which "fit" me last winter just sounds silly to me.

AGAA4 Wed 10-Aug-22 14:49:56

Just though of another one. Shop assistant "Would you like a bag today?" I'm always tempted to say "No, I'll have one next Friday!"

Please do, and take a photo of the expression on her face and post it here!

polly123 Wed 10-Aug-22 14:21:54

Can I get?
Amazing.
I'm good.
Like...like...
Let me be clear (sound familiar?)
Awesome.
And too many more to mention.

gran5up Wed 10-Aug-22 14:14:10

Thanks for this thread: an ideal way to spend a hot afternoon-in the shade with the computer!
Those with time on their hands may wish to scroll through again and note that the vast majority of these are from America, either they took it over from here on the Mayflower (e.g.gotten) and we now have to have it back or have mangled English into AmerEnglish so we get vile "words" like," burglarised" or "hospitalised" and nouns forced into dressing up as verbs-"party" or "invite".
"So" is a perfectly acceptable word but it is, dear class, a "joining word" not one used to start a sentence. "Sooo..." "So what?" What are we referring to-or more correctly,"to what are we referring"!?

Incafarmer Wed 10-Aug-22 14:12:09

As other people,
No worries - especially when they couldn’t supply whatever I’d asked for. Maddening.
Innit
For sure at the end of every sentence
Aks

Definitely getting old!

Dressagediva123 Wed 10-Aug-22 14:06:09

When people use ‘like ‘ in the wrong context / I was like / so he was like - nooo / drives me up the wall.
Awesome
Obviously ( when it’s not because you just met them ).
No worries

Bazza Wed 10-Aug-22 14:01:08

Most of the above, but also “off you go.” It sounds so dismissive.

Nannina Wed 10-Aug-22 13:47:17

Chewbacca

'ya right? Instead of "Hi, how are you?"
"You guys" is just cringe worthy
"Like" said every other word: "So, I was, like, going to the mall and I was like super busy, like I had, like no time to waste at all, like every second counted and I was like rushing like crazy!" Like grrrrr!

Totally agree and ‘basically’ e.g ‘so I basically told him I wasn’t going and basically he went mad and basically told me to get lost’ - overheard at bus stop today.
When I was working a manager used to send staff emails starting ‘Hi guys’. A female colleague and I stopped answering and when he asked why we told him, innocently, that we didn’t think it was meant for us as the last time we looked we were both gals.?

Ijustwantpeace2020 Wed 10-Aug-22 13:47:00

Recently in a restaurant - waitress to us : how’s your grub? It wasn’t a cheap place either!
Bruv - drives me mad!

MrsKen33 Wed 10-Aug-22 13:41:43

Off of
Whatever!
Back story……..what happened to history?

Dianehillbilly1957 Wed 10-Aug-22 13:40:59

Too many to mention!!!?
