Texting etiquette.

I turn my mobile off at night. My landline is on “do not disturb” at night but selected numbers can get through at any time.

I turn my phone to silent apart from the choice to allow calls from family.

I often wake to texts or WhatsApp messages.

I put my phone on “do not disturb” when I go to bed. Only closest family are in my “override” list to still ring or vibrate overnight.

I am a night owl, and really don't like texts or calls at what I consider early morning, yet somehow a lot of people seem to think that contact during business hours is fair game. To me, 9.00pm is early evening, but 9.00am is the crack of dawn. Other people can't know that though, so if everyone uses DND, nobody needs to inconvenience anyone else.

As you can see, I wrote that at 3 am, so perhaps I wasn't functioning properly.

I would never leave my phone downstairs during if my bedroom is upstairs. It's unlikely, but what if someone broke in? They would find (and presumably help themselves to) a mobile phone and I wouldn't be able to phone anyone. The landline phone is not in the bedroom either.

Text messaging has been around for many years now and really it is each individuals responsibility to acquaint themselves with the phone settings that suit them whether to set to silent or to receive calls only from certain numbers, or turn it off completely. Many people will use late evening or night time to catch up with work or social events, but especially mothers with babies or small children keeping them awake, I know my DIL's are adept at texting with one hand while dealing with things with the other. I have one special friend that prefers that we talk on the phone after 10 as we can have a long, uninterrupted conversation at that time.

I would never phone anyone after 9 p.m. except in a dire emergency, but I would happily text or e-mail them.

I assume that those who do not want to be disturbed either leave their phone, as I do, downstairs when I go up to bed, or put it on silent.

My smart phone is smart enough to stay out of my way!

I do have a cheap PAYG smart phone but only because my security system would not run on the tablet. I barely use the other functions on the phone and prefer my old dumb one.

I dont take a phone into the bedroom unless Im actually expecting a call.

I use 'Do not disturb' overnight on my Samsung phone and use the facility to schedule the sending of SMS messages - i.e. write the text message and set it to be sent the following morning. This is useful for messages like 'good luck' (for job interview perhaps) or 'Happy Birthday' to arrive when the recipient is awake and dressed for work and I'm still snoozing in bed!

I turn my phone off at 9 pm because I don’t want to talk to anyone after that time. We do have a landline but I only answer that if I know who is ringing. They soon learn - I have a friend who would ring very early if she could but she knows not to before 9 am!

I put my 'Do Not Disturb' on at night until 09:00.
Calls can still come through. Messages and online alerts are silent, though.

I have found that all texts are not instant as I thought. some take ages to come through.

by the way, when I look at my sent texts, the date is 1/1/1970 how do I change it...date on display is current and the receiver date is current. puzzled.

We didn't even have them back then! ??

A friend said this to me once. Which really confused me, because I just put my phone messaging onto silent at night. I'm a bit of a night owl at times, and send emails/messages when my wide-awake brain reminds me. If I leave it, I'd forget.

I think it depends. Some people I know stay up late so I might text after 9 or 10pm.
I have an American cousin who I some times have to tell it's past midnight here so I'll say goodnight. I also have a landline for emergencies.

Useful information here - I use the "do not disturb" function but didn't know about allowing exceptions for certain numbers.

I stopped the nuisance/ non urgent texts by using the "Do Not Disturb" setting . It lets you choose a From - To time and people who can "Disturb" you in the time you set.

We have iPhones but DD2 has had different makes, there seems to be a setting like this on all the ones she's had.

DD2 set mine up for me and it works. I'm silent from 22 - 08, she text me one night for a lift from the station, when her train was cancelled, the next one got her in 00 silly in morning and didn't want to walk home alone at that time.

DD1 has set it up on DGD phone and I believe laptop too. They are strict about the "Do Not Disturb" times, DGD has only had a sim card for a couple of months and would be glued to it 24/7 without rules :-)

I’m sometimes convinced I’ve heard a text arrive during the night but I’m too sleepy to look. However, in the morning there’s nothing.?‍♂️

The joy of mobile phones is that you can switch them off.
We always do that at night.

I leave my mobile downstairs at night. I've got a landline (one upstairs too), if anyone needed to contact me urgently at night

I have mine on silent most of the time, then check and reply when I am not busy.

I am not the emergency services so do not need to be contactable 24hrs a day.

I can't bring myself to switch off my mobile or ignore messages. I once got a critical message I would hate to have missed and I'm to scared something like that could happen again.

Same here....all the family have land lines so mobiles are off throughout the night.
