Using public wifi anywhere is risky. In the UK, you are more secure using mobile phone data for browsing when out and about (your can 'tether' your device using your mobile phone as a mobile hotspot). Check out your data roaming costs if you go abroad. Otherwise, I would not use public wifi anywhere unless using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPNs are not free but worth the cost if they prevent you from being hacked/scammed. Any data that are transmitted over a VPN are encrypted.
Also, make sure you use unique passwords for each site that you sign into. I pay for a password manager to help me with unique and complex passwords, my password manager also includes a VPN. I pay to use the same password manager on all my devices - my phone, iPad, desktop and laptop. It costs me £3.30 per month.
