Sainsburys Online cancelled order

I placed a grocery order with Sainsburys for delivery today. Got an email alert to say there was a problem with the payment card. I used the Tesco Clubcard Pay+ card which has to be topped up before use - more than enough on it to pay for the shopping.

Rang the number given in the email and selected the option to retry the same care. Explained to the adviser that I had checked and the money was definitely there, so they tried the card again, and again it was declined. Decided to use my normal bank debit card instead and was told I would have to ring the number again and select the option to pay with a different card. Duly did so and was told that because I had already retried the card, they couldn’t try again with a different one, and that the order would be cancelled.

I am I unreasonable to think that this is archaic and that Sainsburys’ need to update their systems instead of letting their customers down ?

Trying one card twice and then a different card probably alerts the system to stop fraud. If someone had stolen your cards they would have had a few tries to use them. It seems Sainsbury allows 3 attempts.

Understandable but so annoying when you think that you have done your shopping.

I understand your frustration and the inconvenience, but just be glad Sainsbury's are safeguarding your money.

Fraud concerns

I have experienced this and the problem appears to be with Sainsbury's security checking system rather than your bank. It is very frustrating especially when the bank has confirmed funds are available.

Despite having the funds, a payment can be rejected due to multiple other causes

I bet you were not the only one experiencing the same issue

My shopping was cancelled a few weeks ago ( not Sainsburys) I just went into the order and rearranged it for the following day, the payment went through fine. I guessed it was just a glitch in the system somewhere.

I can never use my Sainsburys online delivery order on my laptop, it just stops working and gets hot. I have to use the main Computer which is in a cold upstairs study not pleasant when you have to think of something on a cold night.
I also have had my Debit card declined because I tried to use it twice, their fault not mine the laptop had frozen. When I used the other computer with another card I had to have a verified number sent by mobile then they would accept it.
I accept that is security but not allowing orders on the laptop seems ridiculous.

I had a glitch once whereby Tesco would not accept any of my cards. Each card had a different issuer. I rang customer services technical queries and a man sorted it out for me. He said that "some customers" had experienced problems that day but was probably covering for a major glitch.

The main reason for cards being declined (when there is plenty of money available) is that the line is busy and the transaction simply times out. These transactions are two machines talking to another and if one does not get the answer it is expecting the result is a decline.

If Im going to use my debit card online to pay for a large transaction (especially one outside UK) I often ring my bank to advise them and it goes through without a problem.

I’ve had delivery transactions declined with Morrisons more than once. The card issuing bank assured me each time nothing to do with them and as biglouis said likely to be a system overload. Speaking with Morrisons customer services I’ve had the ‘some customers’ response. Interestingly it’s far less frequent since moving deliveries to a quieter time of the week, fewer transactions going through the previous night. It is annoying, we have grocery deliveries because carrying shopping is difficult and painful.

It happened to me once, but I used a different card, and it was fine.

When I phoned the credit card company, they said they sometimes do "spot checks" and randomly block a payment.

The customer then phones, and it gets unblocked. Fraud prevention I inagine.
