Toilet paper

I’ve realised that I am very particular about this. Just finishing a short break and can’t wait to get home to have my own brand again. Why oh why does everywhere use the thin single ply cheap stuff then you need so much of and not only that it is sticking to you as you are wiping with it! Maybe next holidays I will take my own hahaha.

This thread has tickled me 😁. Decent loo roll is important, it’s quite unpleasant being out somewhere and having to use a toilet with substandard loo roll and then having no choice but to wait until you get home to, erm, finish off the job properly.

Remember being in Barcelona about 50yrs ago and public toilets there used to have a elderly lady sitting inside at a small table with a saucer and you had to pay her before you got any toilet paper. For some time after that DH used to ask me if I had my pesetas ready before I used them. Outwith the larger cities the facilities were pretty primitive - always carried my own tissues!

If you don't have room for a bidet then one of these is just as good. Don't why they call it a feminine wash don't men have bottoms.

I love a bidet for washing feet in the summer.

When I was no more than about 11 we went as a family (all 6 of us) to choose a new bathroom suite. (Separate loo then, this was in the 60s.).

None of us had ever seen a bidet before. The saleswoman explained that it was a ‘bottom washer’, which had all of us 4 kids in hysterics for ages. 😂

Moderation in everything...

Just thought I'd post this regarding regular (Japanese style I think) bidet use:

Cleaning the anus after defecation using the bidets contributes to hand hygiene and local comfort, and it may be effective against constipation. However, excessive bidet use potentially causes anal pruritus and anal incontinence

What is a "portable bidet" Bijou?

Some Holiday homes in France and Spain I have stayed in only take thin loo paper they specifically say not to use UK toilet paper!
I too would like a bidet , seriously considering getting rid of my unused bath ( except visitors) and putting in a bigger shower and a bidet .

Thats what the previous owners did Susie, take out the bath and have a shower and bidet (not a large bathroom). Gives you a chance for a "Wet room" style walk in shower with no step in.

We used Bronco. Horrible stuff. My mother thought that the soft paper wasn't hygienic.

(Oh yes, it means I can buy re-cycled loo roll which is admittedly usually on the thin side)

I am just home from a holiday in Turkey missdeke and I very much liked the bidets. I now want one at home.

When I arrived at this house it had a separate bidet - just a modest 2 bed house, but previous owners....

Great inventions, always clean where it matters, and definitely reduces loo roll use - and gentlest of all means on bum. To enter into TMI secret - sorry but need to know....have specific rubber gloves next to bidet.

(Anyone recall the Poirot episode where the Inspector Japp thought it was for head washing?)

As one who grew up with newspaper for toilet-ing, I now make sure I buy decent loo paper. It's one of my little extravagances.
And I always take one roll on holiday, just in case.

We just use Asda Shades - it’s fine, for us anyway. Dh always buys the massive packs - was v handy during the first lockdown when shelves were often empty - we had a good stock already.

I can still almost smell the horrible old Izal/Bronco hard paper - it went with the freezing cold loos in the days before my folks got central heating.

A sister’s former house had a privy in a shed in the garden with a double wooden loo seat - and there was still a nail with squares of newspaper hanging up! Still there long after there was evidently at least one proper loo indoors - maybe it was kept for the gardener and/or skivvy.

I always take toilet paper with me when going away simply because it usually runs out when needed. We never buy the thick stuff as our drains are prone to blocking up.

I ordered my first box of ‘Who gives a crap’ when lockdown started. I’m quite fussy about toilet paper, I get odd allergies to things. I think WGAC is a silly name, but it looks like a very ethical company, which is important to me.

How did we ever survive that awful Izal (??) paper? Shiny on one side and therefore utterly useless, and it was the only product available. I don't recall when soft tissue type loo rolls came into being.

I used to dread visits to my Grandmother. There was an outside toilet with no toilet paper, we had to use squares of newspaper hanging up.

SueDonim I put my (allergen free) bedding on top of the sheets provided - then pack it when I leave. Still, I need to take high dose antihistamines!

As a child, we had to use newspaper!!

SuzieHi Mon 10-Jul-23 21:31:01

Izal toilet paper- 2 pieces needed, fold together and then rough up before using. Mum taught us!!
Block tooth paste- usually pink or blue? Funny but distinctive taste. If ductwork
Both memories from the late 50’s - one bath a week days! One loo & bathroom between 6 in the family. Grans loo was in a shed in the garden ( newspaper ripped up and threaded on string for toilet paper)
Now we have 3 bathrooms - only 2 of us in the house. How times change

Another vote for Who Gives a Crap. Don’t know what Primrose is wittering on about. Standard sized sheets dear - just measured them!

Saggi Mon 10-Jul-23 19:11:49

I’d not mind loo paper if I could have a holiday ….last one was 16 years ago .

Lizzie44 Mon 10-Jul-23 18:15:28

I haven't yet found any toilet paper that's entirely satisfactory in terms of efficient cleaning. If money were no object I would buy a Japanese bidet type toilet with a water spray function.
