Toilet paper

I’ve realised that I am very particular about this. Just finishing a short break and can’t wait to get home to have my own brand again. Why oh why does everywhere use the thin single ply cheap stuff then you need so much of and not only that it is sticking to you as you are wiping with it! Maybe next holidays I will take my own hahaha.

The Izal was horrible.
Here in Greece (where I’m on holiday) we have to put used toilet paper in a bin with a bin liner. I make sure I use plenty of paper and fold it over to conceal what’s inside. Their drains will not cope with any toilet paper.

We have a Saniflo toilet so can only use the "basic" toilet paper not the" cushioned" type which doesn't disintegrate quickly enough. Cushioned type available in the main bathroom.

I use paper but I also use a product called Wype on the paper. No blocked loos with wet wipes I do have 3 ply but not always quilted.

I watch Homes under the Hammer. Why do they do away with the bidet if there is one. Also if there is a separate loo why knock down the wall and incorporate it into the bathroom? Most inconvenient if someone is having a long soak.
I have, a portable bidet to put on top of the toilet. Paper alone doesn’t clean.

Oh I think as, with other things, toilet roll manufacturers have shaved a bit off .

Speaking of loo rolls, is it just me, or do others suspect that Andrex have quietly made their rolls smaller/shorter?

HannahLoisLuke Mon 10-Jul-23 15:15:35

I go for the standard three ply non quilted variety after a plumber told me that quilted loo paper blocks the pipes. I also found that it shreds when you use it. By the way I always finish with a squirt of either a product called Wype or Senset on my last wipe. Gives a nice clean feeling without using the dreaded wipes.

How did we ever survive that awful Izal (??) paper? Shiny on one side and therefore utterly useless, and it was the only product available. I don't recall when soft tissue type loo rolls came into being.

Somewhere around 1950, as I was born in 1951 and we used soft paper all my childhood, although school and public lavatories used Izal then.

Has anyone noticed how the loo rolls have become shorter and narrower? Still nine in a pack, but they don't last as long. A bit like the reduced size of chocolate bars.

KnittyNannie Mon 10-Jul-23 15:04:16

Definitely bamboo from Who Gives a Crap. As with Chocolatelovinggran, we first ordered during lockdown - and still are.

Aveline Mon 10-Jul-23 14:55:51

Izal wasn't shiny on both sides btw. My Granny was v keen on it. I remember when the first soft loo roll came out. We were horrified at its potential for dissolving at just the wrong moment. shock

We always buy good quality thick paper but I have been disappointed recently when I tried other makes in a cost cutting exercise!

The first rubbish I bought was advertised on Facebook and was called Who Gives A Crap. It is thin and the squares are quite a bit smaller than usual. Complete waste of money.

The second was about 24 rolls which were a bargain price and looked good quality and had a coconut aroma. That was from Aldi and was too thin as well.

We really are a luxury quilted family. 😉

I went over to using 'Who gives a Crap' for environmental reasons. I buy the bamboo variety which are stronger than the recycled paper ones. I also tried cheeky panda bamboo but they cost a bit more. Bamboo is better for the environment than ordinary paper. It's not quite as nice as 'Cushelle' which I used to use, but good enough and I've got used to it.

Thank you for reminding me to take some with me when I go on holiday later this month. Myst put it on my ever growing list of what I'm taking.

Jodieb Mon 10-Jul-23 14:50:05

Don't understand hotels etc. Buying cheap, thin loo paper. It just means you use a lot more!

Patsy70 Mon 10-Jul-23 14:43:36

Always wanted a bidet as they’re so much more hygienic, but the loos with a built in water jet sound ideal.

Romola Mon 10-Jul-23 14:41:50

Did anyone else have Bronco when they were growing up? Not so good at wiping bottoms but made excellent tracing paper.

Gumtree Mon 10-Jul-23 14:25:05

I always buy the extra long rolls of thin paper. Much softer on the skin at a stage where it does matter!
Incidentally I always say ‘stage’ not ‘age’ as I approach 80!

Fae1 Mon 10-Jul-23 14:21:51

Always take a loo roll on holidays - especially to far flung places like India where 'public' toilets (🤢) never have any! Breathe in if you absolutely have to 'go' 😬

Redhead56 Mon 10-Jul-23 14:20:12

Izal was a luxury to us growing up that was in school. We had newspaper cut into squares and on string.

Parsley3 Mon 10-Jul-23 14:09:12

I am just home from a holiday in Turkey missdeke and I very much liked the bidets. I now want one at home.

25Avalon Mon 10-Jul-23 14:05:24

Have you seen the price of toilet paper? If you are in hospitality with loads of other costs you aren’t going to spend too much on toilet paper.

missdeke Mon 10-Jul-23 14:00:33

yggdrasil

I have a device called a 'bum gun'. It is attached to the cistern and sprays a strong jet of water whereever you aim it. Much more efficient than loo roll and you can clean the bowl too

All the sit down loos in Turkey have a bidet spout in them, so much nicer. Makes you feel nice and clean.

Patsy70 Mon 10-Jul-23 09:22:56

Take your own brand next time dogsmother! 😂

dogsmother Mon 10-Jul-23 08:57:00

A bum gun!
This sounds entertaining to another degree, not sure it’s for me……
