Car stereos blaring out!

Yesterday morning we were woken by a car stereo at full volume, it was 7.30, the car reversed into a space then the occupant spent a few minutes fiddling on her phone and eventually turned off the engine.
To my surprise she was a suited and booted woman of around 50.

This morning a car has just pulled away with the stereo on full.

Why do people do it?

AIBU or should car sound systems have a legal limit?

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 13:35:04

Aveline

*Marydoll*. Nobody mentioned what marque of car they had until gsm. That was nothing to do with radios blaring.

Threads meander, happens all the time, Aveline.

Actually it is easy to see why posts about music blaring can develop into comments about noisy exhausts.

Not an excuse for unpleasantness, Aveline. You really don't get it, do you?
I think GSM has been very measured and restrained in her responses.

very selfish having music blaring while parked outside someones house, usually the thump, thump type, with the engine running..

MissAdventure Sat 06-Apr-24 13:28:10

Gsm is one of the least flaunty people on here, I think.

Happy driving GSM…..flaunting your wealth 😂. Oh,please ignore such silliness.

Back to the OP: I don’t believe there should be a legal limit for car sound systems as people like to turn their music up to their own desire.
What is selfish is driving around towns with windows down and music blaring out, bass thudding, causing noise pollution. City centres now have enough of that as it is with street performers and big loudspeakers.

My delight is tootling around back country lanes listening to Classic FM or Radio 3, when the music blends beautifully with the countryside. I turn it down and no open windows when in built up areas.
Maybe an on the spot fine for offenders in towns?
I may have contradicted myself there..🤔

Just born to be wild Marydoll! X

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 12:27:24

Georgesgran, I've had two convertibles. My neighbour and I were like Thelma and Louise driving to school in the morning.
Those were the days!

Georgesgran Sat 06-Apr-24 12:24:25

Unfortunately, my love affair with cars from the Stuttgart Stable (I’ve had 3) came to an end when DGS1 came along and I upsized to the Grannymobile!!
Since then, I’ve gone back to a convertible, albeit a very small one! I love my music on loud, but I’m considerate when stationary, if the roof’s down.

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 12:10:05

Aveline, you are out of order. You have made this personal. sad

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Apr-24 12:08:23

Really Aveline, is this necessary? Why have you taken this dislike of my choice of car (and incidentally the choice of the chap who lives across the road from me)? Why do you say you are ‘disappointed’? You don’t know me, you live nowhere near me and all you know about me is what I have posted on GN. There is no reason for you to be disappointed in me, though I have to say that I am very disappointed at the criticism you have made of me, purely based on the car I choose to drive, on this thread. I might have expected this of some, but not you.

Aveline Sat 06-Apr-24 10:43:42

So everyone is expected to put up with your noisy engine? How nice for everyone.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Apr-24 10:09:10

Aveline, I mentioned the marque because I had previously said that I enjoyed the sports exhaust and another poster asked what that was, so I explained. My car isn’t flashy. It’s a subtle dark grey and it was not bought with the intention of drawing attention. It has never to my knowledge attracted negative attention (except here) - I drive with courtesy and find the same courtesy afforded to me by other road users. I really am not bothered if your husband isn’t impressed by Porsches - I am not out to impress him or anyone else. In fact my husband (who has driven Range Rovers for years) actually suggested I tried one when I wanted to buy a new car, and I was sold as soon as I had a test drive. If I had wanted a small, quiet, unobtrusive vehicle which is your preference, I would have bought one. The howling and growling of the engine on the open road gives me a huge thrill. We are all different.

MissAdventure Sat 06-Apr-24 09:53:04

I think it's lovely seeing someone playing their music, driving their lovely car, doing their thing, singing along.

smile

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 09:50:47

It is getting a bit silly, I agree!

Aveline Sat 06-Apr-24 09:47:16

I know. I hate noisy cars blaring out their owners choice of 'music'. I was just struck at gsm's decision to post about having a Porsche. It seemed out of character and flashy. Having been born and brought up in family of keen and knowledgeable petrol heads, I personally prefer a small quiet unobtrusive vehicle rather than try to draw (potentially negative) attention to myself by my car choice 🚗. DH goes the other way. I won't say what he has. He's not impressed by Porsches btw!

25Avalon Sat 06-Apr-24 09:23:23

This is all getting a bit silly. If GSM wants to drive around in a Porsche why not? Others may prefer something different or may not be able to afford a car at all. It’s still a free country. We buy new and keep it for years. At the moment it’s a 7 year old hybrid. We could afford much more but aren’t bothered. What bothered the op, however, was the loud noise of car stereos blaring out showing a total lack of respect for others.

M0nica Sat 06-Apr-24 09:21:40

I haven't heard a car stereo blaring out for years.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Apr-24 08:36:45

I don’t care for vintage cars Aveline. My husband is an enthusiast but they are not my thing at all. When I bought my car I was working and it reliably took me around the country, never letting me down once (you couldn’t expect that of an Aston). It wasn’t something to pose in on the weekend. When you drive long distances it’s nice to be able to enjoy the drive don’t you think? And like it or not, the big corporate clients expect you to turn up in something suitably expensive. They like to ‘flaunt their lawyer’.

lixy Sat 06-Apr-24 07:51:28

I loved the weddings where I used to live.
Often the whole family involved would hire Porsches or other sports cars for the weekend and parade around taking a video of the whole joyous, flamboyant, loud celebrations.

Our road was on a slight hill and we had a road hump nearby so we were treated to the whole display, music and loud engines. We would usually go into the front garden, along with our neighbours, to wish the wedding party well.

So, yes, I have Porsche envy too but I don't think it beats the sound of a decent motorbike.

Bass booming from car windows? - sorry, not acceptable in residential areas.

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 07:29:43

Why the snide comments directed at GSM?

I love quirky cars. If you look at videos of Milan on YouTube, you will see lots of Porsches crawling about the streets. Now that is flaunting your wealth!

There is a bright orange Porches parked in the same spot daily in Glasgow. I have Porsche envy! 💚

Aveline Sat 06-Apr-24 07:21:26

germanshepherdsmum only 17 years old? I'm not interested in jewellery etc either. However, all sorts of classic cars are much more interesting forms of transport than Porches. With money to spare I'd have thought you might have a vintage Bentley, a Bristol, an Aston or even a Morgan. So many to choose from.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 05-Apr-24 22:12:03

Sadly there is no public transport where I live Wheniwasyourage! Zilch!

Tenko Fri 05-Apr-24 22:04:18

I like my music loud in my car, but I have the windows shut.
Another driver thing which grinds my gears is the reversing sensor beeps . A few of my neighbours are crap at reversing into their drives and it’s a constantly beeping . Our bedroom is at the front the house and in summer 🤬

Wheniwasyourage Fri 05-Apr-24 21:58:33

Germanshepherdsmum, I would love to meet you some time, but maybe we should meet somewhere we can both reach by (quiet) public transport!
