Car stereos blaring out!

Yesterday morning we were woken by a car stereo at full volume, it was 7.30, the car reversed into a space then the occupant spent a few minutes fiddling on her phone and eventually turned off the engine.
To my surprise she was a suited and booted woman of around 50.

This morning a car has just pulled away with the stereo on full.

Why do people do it?

AIBU or should car sound systems have a legal limit?

I bought my current car 17 years ago Aveline. I’m sorry you’re disappointed with my choice but it has always given me enormous pleasure. I have kept it far longer than any previous car because of that and have no intention of selling it any time soon. How would you like me to ‘flaunt my wealth’? Or should I just keep it in the bank and pretend it doesn’t exist? Would that suit you? I’m afraid I don’t care for jewellery or expensive holidays so my chances of satisfying you are rather limited.

Disappointed but not surprised Aveline.
I like loud music in my car, but keep the windows closed and turn it down in town and approaching our house.
Rock has to be loud, as does drum n bass.

Not a very imaginative way to flaunt your wealth germanshepherdsmum. I must say I'm a bit disappointed.

To me those people are saying “look at me, I think I’m special”

Got it in one, Theexwife.

DH likes his music on when he drives, and as he’s hard of hearing it has to be pretty loud grin. But he has the common courtesy to keep the windows shut and wait till he’s on the open road before he switches on.

Personally, I prefer a good audiobook.

Pulled up at traffic lights, car next to me had windows open and rock music blaring out. I opened my windows and treated them to classic FM at full volume! The look on the driver's face was priceless.

Romola Fri 05-Apr-24 18:35:45

Just please keep the windows closed if you want to listen to loud music in your car.
The kind of music I like has a greater dynamic range than most, which is no good in a car; the soft passages are inaudible. So I rarely listen to music on the move.

Actually I haven’t heard any Porsche driver jokes. Probably because the people I know either drive a Porsche or are sufficiently wealthy not to suffer Porsche envy. I suspect the jokes are similar to Essex girl jokes - I lived in Essex for many years, and my ancestors lived there for centuries, but there is no similarity between me and the girls in the jokes.

*Germanshepherdsmum*! I'm sure you'll have heard all the Porsche driver jokes. Sounds like you're living up to them - or is it down?

Ouch!😱

Oh dear, Wheniwasyourage, the growl of the engine is a huge part of the attraction of my car - which a young half-wit certainly couldn’t afford, even second hand.

Yes, Astitchintime, I am always aware of approaching emergency vehicles and I have never yet had a problem anticipating a junction (or any other visible potential hazard). I have been driving for many years and have owned my present car for 17 years (and a similar model before that) without problems. I know how to drive safely.

Astitchintime Fri 05-Apr-24 16:22:52

Loud music or loud engines........can you all guarantee to hear an emergency vehicle on sirens approaching you from behind or even when anticipating a junction?? - Just asking.

The point is that it increases the noise for those who, like me, like a loud engine. I drive a Porsche which is loud, but with the sports exhaust much louder. I don’t think it would be your thing Wheniwasyourage, but it’s very much mine.

You’re right, Germanshepherdsmum, it’s certainly not my thing, and I just don’t understand what the attraction would be. I spend happy minutes thinking of what I would like to do to the young half-wits who drive around the streets with stupidly loud cars (IMO), but before doing it, I would like to just look down my nose at them and suggest that they get their exhausts mended. grin

Living near your neighbours would be my idea of hell.

paddyann54 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:17:46

I like my music loud ,I wont apologise to anyone for that.If I know neighbours are on shifts or ill I obviously keep my windows closed otherwise I play it at a level I enjoy.I have neighbours who play live music in their gardens ,a guitar and an accordian often sung along to by the player.Am I annoyed by it..no I'm delighted that people get pleasure from music and its lovely to hear signs of life in what has become a street full of mainly 60+ folk.Equally I love to hear the children play outdoors

Ear pods aren’t headphones!

The music would surely be better with decent headphones.

To me those people are saying “look at me, I think I’m special”

You can’t drive a car wearing headphones!

I wear EarPods whilst driving, it is not illegal, the deaf are allowed to drive.

..

I never have the radio or music playing when I'm driving. I so so relish the peace and quiet - in the knowledge that when I arrive home there will be more than enough noise and mayhem awaiting me!

I was led to believe this was now against the law, though why on earth they make them able to be so loud is beyond me!!
I hate bass music, all that thumping drives me nuts, and loud music in vehicles is just a distraction!!

Shrub Fri 05-Apr-24 10:53:11

Loud music coming from passing cars just adds to the stress of everyday living. I regularly walk to the shops in my local village and can hear the music coming before I see the car itself. Do the drivers not realise how loud it is to those outside!? It’s very antisocial.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 10:34:42

I don't like it outside my flat in the early hours, but don't mind at all when someone's driving.

I rather enjoy a fleeting listen to others' music as they go past.

Visgir1 Fri 05-Apr-24 10:28:33

Did it when I was younger and tbh still do it now my car, my space, but only when I'm driving. I have had several soft top cars over the years , so you have to turn the volume up. If I was parked or in a que, I did turn it down.

LovesBach Fri 05-Apr-24 10:16:29

I sometimes long for a foam fire extinguisher to empty into the open window of such vehicles - one passed through the town a few weeks ago, both windows down, and the volume was so high that people were looking anguished and putting hands over their ears - not an over reaction, it truly was so loud that it was painful, and I can't imagine the state of the hearing of the occupant. I might comment here that I love listening to music when driving, but with the windows firmly shut.
