We live in a northern area, with a small hospital. Many medical cases have to be sent down to Vancouver to larger hospitals with specialists. The problem lies in the cost of living in Vancouver for family members.
I just checked our local site, and while there weren't very many, they were all to help support family travelling with loved ones while under medical treatment.
I have experience this myself, when DH had to be flown south for emergency bypass surgery. I was able to fly on the air ambulance with him, but had to book my own hotel for 10 days while he was in hospital, plus some recovery time. We are on the hook to find our own way home, at our own cost. Luckily we have some coverage through my work insurance, but a very minimal amount. Of course I would never ask for public help, but there are families that really need assistance.
