A secret door in the home library

Hi everyone.
Our new house is undergoing a complete refurbishment.
We're planning something unique for our home library-one of the bookcases will open to the small home cinema room, with a projector screen recessed to the ceiling. It's a project we're really excited about and we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Did anyone do something similar?

Our general contractor is not able to provide such joinery.

So my questions:

1. What is the best way to go about the home cinema ventilation (room without windows)?

2. Can anyone recommend a joiner/carpenter capable of manufacturing a secret bookcase door (Murphy door) in London?

Thanks in advance,
S

There is a comparatively new Part F of the Building Regs (from a couple of years ago) which deals with ventilation. I think it pretty much says that if you have a room with no windows, you have to have some form of ‘purge’ system. Your local council, a good builder, or a structural engineer would be able to advise.

I also hope that the ventilation we choose will be quiet. As the sound of the air flow can affect the home cinema experience.

I have no suggestions but am axed at the plans you have in mind. I am imagining one of those libraries you see in these large houses that rotate to reveal a lovely lounge /cinema room behind with large windows and rich velvet curtains.
Good luck with your plans ..

‘Amazed’ , not axed 😂

I have always wanted to have one of those. We have an opportunity now. It looks like most of the firms specializing in such things are in the US. I never thought it would be difficult to find someone in London 🥺

You could check Insta and Pinterest. Lots of bookshelf doors on there, and I’m fairly some are from the UK. Most people don’t mind you contacting them and asking about their tradespeople/suppliers.

Ooh, lucky you, SunnySammy! I always fancied having a secret room, which is accessed from a bookcase. Mine would be a reading den, but a cinema room sounds like good fun too. Hope it turns out well!

Employ an architect to sort this out. It will clearly need building regs consent and an architect will have the contacts in the bullding trade to find you a suitable supplier and contractor.

To find an architect contact the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) who will be able to give you a ist of London based architects specialising in this kind of project.

That's a good idea. I hope to find something suitable on Pinterest or Instagram. It's just overwhelming to browse all these images.

More complex than I thought it would be. We may need to investigate this route. Thank you!

I have heard that people are increasingly having cellars dug out under their homes , to be used as extra rooms. They woukdnt have windows either.
